Membrane or mechanical?

The first thing you need to decide if you want a mechanical gaming keyboard or a membrane keyboard. Mechanical keyboard switches explained

If you decide to go with a mechanical keyboard, the next thing to figure out is the type of switch you want. Most gaming keyboards tend to use German Cherry MX switches, but you may also see other types from Kailh and Outem from time to time, or in the case of Logitech and Razer, their own internal switches. Generally speaking, they usually fall into one of two categories: line or touch.

Taking Cherry MX switches as the prime example, linear red switches are often considered the fastest and best for gaming. Their clean up and down movements don’t provide much tactile feedback, making them less suitable for long periods of typing, but their short activation points make them a popular choice for FPS and competitive online games. You’ll also find even faster linear variants, known as the MX Silver, which have an even shorter activation point than the MX Reds.

Blue tactile switches, on the other hand, are generally considered better for typing thanks to their loud and clicking sound, while brown switches are a kind of home halfway between red and blue. They are a bit quieter than other types of switches, but when you press them you’ll often feel a small thump in the middle, giving you a slightly more physical confirmation that you pressed the key correctly.

We’re also starting to see more Kailh or Kaihua switches also appearing on mechanical keyboards. They are made in China and the most popular inline models are the Kailh Reds, which are very similar to the Cherry MX Reds and the Speed ​​Silvers which, as you might have guessed, are Kailh’s answer to Cherry’s MX Silver. You’ll also find tactile Kailh Browns and Blues, but they also have some more tactile ‘Speed’ variants, including Speed ​​Bronze and Speed ​​Copper. They are less common, but are much more “clicky” (ie noisy) than their linear Speed ​​Silver counterparts.

Outemu switches are also made in China and also largely match what you’ll find at the Cherry MX camp. They can usually be found in inexpensive gaming keyboards and come in very similar colors: red, blue, and brown, as well as black.
