Mentors are important to your career development. They can expose you to new experiences and points of view.

In addition to finding a good mentor, consider finding a good protégé as well. In many cases, taking the next step in your career means you will have to manage people. The best way to practice is to mentor someone else.

When you become a mentor, you pass on your knowledge to others to help them grow. You learn a lot about motivating people and teaching them new skills, when you can also act as a mentor on the job.

Let me give you some examples from my life.

  • I am very capable of anything analytical. My analytical skills are really strong. I can put together an article, presentation or mind map in no time. Self-reflection is instinctive. Thanks to the conversation, I can understand people very quickly and so on. Improving my analytical skills is a breeze. When it comes to applying my analytical skills to new fields, I can learn it in no time. Business planning, life strategies, process optimization, market analysis, stock market analysis, book summaries, it all comes naturally to me.
  • I have no talent for grammar. In high school, when it comes to language subjects, I was very good at writing essays, expressing my opinion, and drawing major points from literature. But the grammar sucked. I barely passed my grammar exams. That didn’t stop me from writing and publishing over 2,000 pages of text in my life. I have been improving my grammar very slowly over the years. I still have trouble understanding many grammatical terms, but that doesn’t stop me. My progress is slow, but I am not standing still. It counts.
  • There’s one thing I’m even less gifted at than grammar. This is a sport. Back in elementary and high school, I was the one who couldn’t catch the ball. So I skipped gym classes instead. But for the last three years or so, I have been investing heavily in my motor and sports skills. It often sucks that most people can do some kind of exercise by default while I have problems. But that never stopped me. I’m improving, catching up. Comparing myself three years ago and today… what a difference in mastering athletic movements.

Therefore, it makes sense to use double standards when it comes to talent. If you don’t have a talent for the skill you want to learn, think of the talent as overrated. Hard work beats talent every time. With all your hard work, you will develop greater endurance, willpower, and endurance. Lucky.

There is one great added value if you don’t have the skills. You understand what life is like when you have no talent for something and you know what it takes to learn it the hard way. People who are gifted for something usually don’t have that unique perspective. With a unique perspective, you can always write a book or become a teacher or coach.

How to find a mentor

  • Each of my articles in English is edited. But it’s not just copied. My proofreader writes comments to me alerting me to common mistakes I make, expressions that can be corrected, and so on.
  • I recently started working with a pronunciation coach. I learned more in a few lessons than in weeks of doing research on my own. What happened to me was that I was practicing things the wrong way, reinforcing the wrong pronunciation. What a loss.

These are just three examples from my life. Before that, I had a lot of mentors who taught me many different skills – from selling to innovative thinking.

Hiring a professional trainer can be quite expensive, but is usually well worth the investment. At least if you know why you are doing this and if you can find the right coach. The only investments I never regret are investing in myself.

Last but not least, having a trainer is a solid financial and time investment. You strictly set the dates on which you will have training sessions. You have to pay for these sessions. All of this gives you extra motivation. It’s hard to tell your trainer, “I’m giving up now”.

Role models can also be a great help

Aside from getting a coach, finding a few role models can help a lot. You can model the success of people who have already achieved what you want to achieve, at least to some extent. Finding role models is not only a great way to speed up your skill-acquisition process, it’s also very motivating.

This way, find a few people you admire and respect, who have mastered the skill you want to master – read interviews with them, watch videos about their performances, explore their path to success, read about their (humble) beginnings, and so on.

Don’t price your product or service based on how you value your work.

First, most people underestimate what they do. Second, you want to focus on your client’s needs, not yours.

Take the time to find out how your product or service saves time, money, or customer frustration.

How much is your solution worth to your client to get these problems resolved?

I am not suggesting that you let the client set the rates. I want you to see how much more valuable your service is to them when you put it in context with their needs.

For example, I trained a data scientist who valued his work at an hourly wage of $ 75. If he was working on a 5-hour project that would save the company $ 5,000 or $ 15,000, he would have received the same amount.

I suggested that he price his service based on the percentage of savings he had generated for his clients. Instead of earning $ 75 an hour, I instructed him to earn 10% of any savings he had generated for his client.

This shift in pricing strategy not only raises his rates dramatically but appreciates his work based on something of critical value to the company, saving you money.

Instead of earning just $ 375 to work on a 5-hour project to save the company $ 15,000, he would be paid 400,500 by paying 10% of the savings he generated for them.

Not only does it earn more money, it also positions itself as an investment in the eyes of its client, not as a cost.

Nor will he get nickel and he won’t get paid for his working hours. This pay structure motivates him to save more money, no matter how long it takes him to work on the project.

Since he works with more clients, he will most likely streamline the process, reducing the time it takes to complete the job, which gives him even more money!

Most people price their product or service based on their needs. Try to price your services based on customer needs.

#3 Work for Yourself

I’ve talked to over 500 freelancers, consultants and freelance workers and you know what? You can earn significantly more by working for yourself than for someone else for the exact same job, especially if you are a knowledge worker.

In my experience, on average, it takes about 2 years for someone to start earning the same amount of money on their own as the income from their last job. In the third and fourth years, many people earn twice as much as in their last job!

Even if you start a business and fail, you will be rewarded for it! You will receive an entrepreneurship bonus of around 10%. A 2016 University of California study of 5,000 people from 1979 to 2012 found that you will only get a 10% salary increase for trying to start a business and failing compared to a peer with exactly the same characteristics who was still working at work.

Employers value risk taking and those who have a broader understanding of the business beyond their specific skill set.
