Before AMD Ryzen processors were introduced, many competing brands were considered the best choice for processors for performance-based computing platforms; and basically each of the mid-range and high-end computers had Intel processors for their devices. We can’t deny that their processors are good for overclocking and gaming, resulting in a processor that will easily hold your platform for around five years. But recently AMD surprised everyone with its processors, which actually offer more threads, cores and most importantly a much lower price compared to all of its competitors.
Today, the AMD Ryzen series is by far the top winner when it comes to price range and performance, especially with their Ryzen 5 1600, which is one of the most famous processors to date. Other CPUs on the market today are no longer the staple choice for computers, especially when it comes to gaming and overall system performance.
If you are choosing between a competing processor and the Ryzen 5 1600, we strongly suggest you choose the Ryzen 5 1600. This is because the processor can outperform or even beat other processors, even if they have the advantage of 1 GHz clock speed. Of course, we’re not saying that other processors don’t have that advantage; in fact, they do especially when it comes to single-threaded performance, but when it comes to productivity, multi-threading, as well as overall performance, AMD’s Ryzen 5 1600 is unbeatable, especially when it comes to its twelve threads and six cores.

When we got the Ryzen 5 1600 for review, it came in a very simple, simple package that you can see in the pictures. The good news is that if you buy one of these beasts you will get a much nicer retail box. The AMD Ryzen 5 1600 comes in a nicely designed retail box with the Ryzen logo on the front of the box. There is also a small “5” in the bottom corner of the package to let you know that the CPU is part of the Ryzen 5 series. There isn’t much to see on the product box, so we headed straight to opening the package to see what’s inside. When we open the package, you will immediately see an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor; in addition to the product, you will also find a carefully inserted certificate of authenticity.
If you look at the chip itself, you’ll see that the Ryzen 5 1600 has an integrated heat sink that covers almost the entire item. There is a huge AMD Ryzen logo on the front of the processor, while a much smaller one for the Ryzen 5 1600 can be seen at the top. Chip-Lineup Details: Ryzen 7, 5, and 3
In terms of computing performance, AMD Ryzen 7 processors are impressive for processors ranging from $ 329 to $ 499. But of course, not everyone can afford to spend that much on a CPU – even if it’s probably a theft compared to Intel’s prices. Plus, money, if you’re not a digital content creator, are constantly transcoding video, or are not doing CPU-intensive research tasks, you won’t be using the eight cores and 16 threads built into the Ryzen 7 part as often as you like lower budgets) AMD offers as many as four Ryzen 5 processors, with fewer cores and lower prices.
The Ryzen 5 lineup consists of two six-core and two four-core Ryzen 5 chips. The lower Ryzen 3 offerings will arrive, AMD says, in the second half of 2017. And while details are lacking at the time of writing, AMD promised the ultra-high-end “Threadripper” line also in 2017, with chips packing up to 16 cores and 32 threads.
Several features of Ryzen chips set them apart from Intel’s rival offerings. First things first: AMD says all Ryzen chips will be unlocked for overclocking. And, at least based on the details announced so far on the Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 chips, all of these chips will feature Simultaneous Thread Doubling (SMT). SMT is similar to Hyper-Threading technology, used in many mid-to-high-end Intel processors. It’s worth noting that the unlocked Intel Core i5-7600K processor and the previous generation Core i5-6600K do not have Hyper-Threading, making them stuck in four processing threads, while the AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and the Ryzen 5 1600 chip we’re looking at have 12 thread processing available, and the Ryzen 5 1400 and 1500X have eight.
We’ve already reviewed the quad-core Ryzen 5 1500X, which is one step below the Ryzen 5 1600, and the Ryzen 5 1600X, which is one step higher. And we tested the basic Ryzen 5 1400 along with the chip we’re looking at. So we’ll have all the Ryzen 5 layouts to compare the Ryzen 5 1600 to our charts, along with some similarly priced Intel-based alternatives.
AMD claims the Ryzen 5 1600 has an impressively low 65-watt thermal power coefficient (TDP, a measure of heat dissipation requirements), which is slightly lower than the 95-watt TDP of the Ryzen 5 1600X and the higher-end eight-core Ryzen 7 chips in terms of energy consumption, the difference will not be that significant. But if you’re building a small system that doesn’t have a lot of cooling room, you can opt for one of the 65-watt parts.
We tested the Ryzen 5 1600 with cooling provided by AMD. This cooler (AMD calls it “Wraith Spire”) is also the cooler that comes with this chip. So you’ll understand how we test how it works with what’s in the box, not some massive liquid cooler or something similarly exotic.
The New AMD Chipsets: X370, B350, and More
If you’re looking specifically at the number of cores and threads, the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 already has an impressive price advantage over current Intel six-core chips. And it only gets better when you consider the platform as a whole. The motherboards that AMD’s partners rolled out around Ryzen and sweetened the deal shortly thereafter.
Looking for a Ryzen motherboard that will allow you to overclock and install one high-end graphics card, such as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, or one of AMD’s upcoming “Vega” cards? That’ll get you just $ 69 for, say, the ASRock AB350M-HDV. The top-of-the-line X370 motherboards are better suited to handle advanced builds and support Nvidia’s dual-card SLI configurations. But some B350 boards have dual graphics card slots and support dual-card setups from AMD through CrossFire.
If you care about features like RGB lighting and slots in a metal casing (and we’re certainly not suggesting that everyone does), generally you’ll have to pay a little extra for an Intel-based board with comparable features. The upcoming Intel X299 platform may change all of this, but we haven’t seen a broad overview of motherboard prices yet.
Technically, there are five new chipsets available with new AMD motherboards. Here’s a look at their main features and their differences in a summary directly from AMD.
As mentioned earlier, if you want to install multiple Nvidia graphics cards, you’ll need to go for the top-of-the-line X370 chipset, but even those boards start at around $ 110. The A320 and A300 chipset don’t support overclocking, and the latter lacks native USB 3.1 Gen 2 support. But these boards should be even more aggressive as they are a step down from the B350 boards which start as low as $ 69.
These low-end tiles were just falling apart when we wrote this, so we’ll have to wait to see where they land in terms of features and prices. But we wouldn’t be surprised if some of these boards cost as little as $ 50 in the coming months (especially with the introduction of the Ryzen 3 processors). Now we’re not suggesting choosing the cheapest board you can find, but the idea of ditching a 12-thread CPU for $ 219 to a motherboard under $ 100 and getting roughly similar performance to what you could get from a roughly 620 Intel CPU / Motherboard combination USD (with the Core i7-6800K) is quite attractive.
How is AMD going to get its motherboard partners to produce such relatively inexpensive motherboards? This is primarily because AMD Ryzen chips (and the upcoming “Raven Ridge” or APU CPUs / GPUs that will use the same AM4 socket) integrate much of the electronics required for interfaces such as USB, SATA, and PCI Express into the same chips. As a result, less electronics have to be built into the boards.
The Ryzen 5 1600 may be relatively old, but it’s still a good gaming processor. However, keep in mind that there are newer chips that are more efficient and cheaper.
Gaming Benchmarks
Time for gaming benchmarks and first Assassin’s Creed Odyssey AND .. the 1600 AF provides basically the same performance as the R5 2600, making it slightly faster than the original 1600. As expected, the margins are very similar at 1440p.
The performance in Battlefield V is very similar between the original 1600, 1600 AF and 2600. Obviously that’s the same story at 1440p, so with a weaker graphics card you can’t expect any difference.
The 1600 AF matched the 2600 with identical performance in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, making it a few frames faster than the original model and we see essentially identical margins at 1440p.
We see identical performance in games with 1600 AF versus 2600 once again, this time in testing with The Division 2.
The results at 1440p resolution are no different, and here we see more evidence that the 1600 and 1600 AF will provide the same lower-tier GPU gaming experience.
Next up is Far Cry New Dawn and yeah .. it’s a familiar sight.
The 1600A basically matches the 2600, making it a bit faster than the original, the real 1600. The 1440p offers no surprises, more of the same here.
We see a nice 13% increase in 1% low performance for the 1600 AF versus the Hitman 2 1600 at 1080p, and the refreshed 1600 was basically able to match the 2600. The low 1% margin stretches to 16% at 1440p, but overall the margins are almost same.
1600 AF also shows good 1% low improvements in Total War Three Kingdoms, beating 1600 by 16% margin at 1080p and reaching 1-2fps at 2600. Margins are slightly reduced at 1440p but overall a similar story.
Wrap Up: Incredible Budget CPU
This was our quick look at how the Ryzen 5 1600 AF works, and the results were as positive as we expected. It’s a Ryzen 5 2600 with a very slight drop in clock speed. Speaking of which, you can of course overclock the 1600 AF as it’s fully unlocked. Our chip – which we bought at a retail store – hit 4.2GHz at 1.4V, and that’s the same overclock as the R5 2600 retail part we have on hand.
Some chips can only reach 4 GHz depending on the quality of the silicon, some or rather a few can exceed 4.2 GHz, but based on reports we have seen, 4.2 GHz seems to be the upper limit for overclocking results. Our original R5 1600 chip also runs at 4 GHz, and it seems to be about as good as you can realistically hope for with an older processor.
In other words, the Ryzen 5 1600 AF is not only cheaper than the original 1600 and faster out of the box, but it should also overclock better. The power consumption is in line with the 2600, with a slight advantage out of the box due to a slight drop in clock frequency, though this may vary depending on the quality of the silicon.
For budget builders with access to 1,600 AF for $ 85, there simply isn’t a better choice. As we said before, the Ryzen 5 2600 already had an amazing value at $ 120. So the 1600 AF, which is basically the same CPU, with an additional discount, is just a crazy offer.
AMD hurts Intel with parts like this. Right now, the Core i5-9600K costs $ 240, and the locked i5-9400F costs $ 165 (check out this performance comparison). We expect both of these 6-core / 6-thread processors to be slower than the 1600 gaming AF within a few years. If the 1600 AF doesn’t sell in your country, you can still buy the R5 2600 for less than any modern Core i5 CPU, which is why we’ve selected it as the best budget CPU you can buy, well, so far.
As for the USB ports, there are USB 3.2 Gen2 connectors on the rear panel as well as USB 3.1 Gen1 and Gen2 (Type-A and Type-C). Plus, it comes with StoreMI technology that lets you instantly transfer data from slower drives to faster drives.
XFX RX 580 8GB
The new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 “Ampere” graphics card is the best interpretation of the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Gaming X Trio graphics card. Cards in this category are fast enough to either maximize the game at standard resolutions or play at higher resolutions at lower settings.
The MSI RTX 3060 Gaming X Trio looked impressive overclocked. In fact, we improved by almost 10%. Overclocking was more significant than any other RTX 3060, thanks to the low temperatures and excellent VRM circuit.
The RTX 3060 has 3584 CUDA cores, 112 Tensor (3rd generation) cores, 28 Ampere RT cores, 112 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. NVIDIA softens the deal by increasing the memory to 12 GB from 8 GB in the RTX 2060. The width and bus type of 192-bit GDDR6 memory remain unchanged. The memory clock has been slightly increased to 15 Gb / s.
For the first time, the newest 8nm “GA106” silicon chip has arrived on the desktop platform, giving partners of custom NVIDIA boards a lot of freedom to add weight to the chip as this MSI Gaming X Trio card does, or cut costs down to coming up with simple designs that don’t they break the bank.
It is also expected to provide a significant performance boost over the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB “Pascal”, another standard NVIDIA graphics card. The card is capable of playing at 1440p with moderate information or at 1080p with full ray tracing.
The latest GeForce Ampere architecture introduces second-generation RTX technology, which includes new Ampere CUDA cores with FP32 + INT32 mathematical performance concurrently, second-generation RT cores that double the cut performance compared to the previous generation, and motion-tracing hardware on the move.
MSI’s top tier GeForce RTX 3060 Gaming X Trio enhances the reliability of the RTX 3060. This card has a scaled VRM solution and a powerful Tri Frozr cooling solution that is configured for low gaming noise, is loaded with all the RGB ornaments you can ask for, and looks high-end when fitted.
MSI also set the maximum GPU Boost frequency to 1852 MHz, giving the card the highest processing speed (compared to the reference 1777 MHz). MSI hasn’t sent us any details on the price of this card, but we expect it to be significantly more expensive than the asking price of $ 329, which will likely take no more than a day or two.
We discovered a 5% gap between the best and worst overclockers, which is much more than any card overclocked in the factory. Memory overclocking brought significant gains, which is not surprising considering that these chips are officially rated at 16Gb / s.

Tested the latest MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming (OC edition) is an excellent product with completely silent cooling. It’s overclocked at the factory, and when combined with default variables such as 6GB graphics memory, this product exudes amazing gaming performance. There is a significant Maxwell GPU and it is a phenomenal player with such gaming rendering power.
The 980 Ti is based on the Large Maxwell GPU, which is the same GPU that powers the Titan X. The product has been scaled down, but there is still a lot of performance. The GTX 980 Ti has a large graphics memory with a capacity of six gigabytes, and thanks to such specifications the GTX 980 Ti can arouse the interest of real players.
The graphics processor that powers the GeForce 980 Ti is amazing, with tremendous switching frequency; it’s a slightly updated GM200 A1 GPU that also powers the Titan X. So it’s a slightly different iteration of the GM200.
Unlike the GeForce 980, this product has a nice 6 GB framebuffer capacity and almost a third more shaders, which allows you to accumulate as many as 2,816 of them playing a binary game on a GPU with eight billion transistors (the GeForce GTX 980 has 5 billion).
When it comes to memory, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti offers 7Gbps memory, the fastest GDDR5 memory currently available on a graphics card, at least before the competition will soon release HBM (stack memory). Paired with GPU Boost 2.0, this product’s dynamic clock is sold in the 1076 MHz range for reference products. The 980 Ti’s base reference clock is 1 GHz. It’s not that the card can’t be heavier; instead, it is ready to control the energy consumption of the product.
Monitor interfaces for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti include DVI, HDMI 2.0, and DisplayPort; however, this will be slightly different for partner products released after Computex, depending on their development and cooling.

The Asus ROG Strix X470-I Gaming is a Mini-ITX that can accommodate Ryzen processors via the AM4 socket. This includes the Ryzen 5 1600. As an M-ITX motherboard, the Strix X470-I fits easily into smaller PC cases.
Structurally, the motherboard is much more striking than the ASRock AB350M PRO4. It has RGB lighting and a fairly colorful layout overall. One of the things we don’t like about the design is that it’s a bit cluttered which is understandable as it’s a mini mobo. But we still saw many other M-ITX units using space more efficiently.

6. Asus ROG Strix B350-I Gaming
This motherboard is quite similar to the ROG Strix X470-I Gaming, but instead of relying on the X470 chipset, this motherboard uses the B350 chipset, which is a more budget-friendly chipset. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that the Strix B350-I is less expensive than its X470-I counterpart.
The design of this motherboard is much simpler than that of the X470-I, but still retains its striking appearance. In our opinion, the B350-I is a nicer album than the x470 for the simple reason that it’s not that cluttered. Does that mean it offers fewer features than the X470-I? Not at all. Both boards have almost the same feature set.
This motherboard comes with two NVMe M.2 ports that can be used with SSDs. It also includes an M.2 combo audio card to help improve SupremeFX circuitry, as well as M.2 drives to reduce internal noise.

The motherboard comes with 2 DIMM slots that can accommodate up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM, which is one area where this motherboard can’t cope with the X470-I as the latter can handle up to 64GB of RAM.
Like the X470-I, however, this board offers Gigabit LAN for wired networks and 802.11ac Wi-Fi for wireless networks, which is cool considering the price. When it comes to connectivity, this board comes with lots of USB 3.1 connectors.
