The last major music event in Epic Games may be the biggest one so far. Ariana Grande’s psychedelic live Fortnite experience was a multi-day event that melded with a broader storyline on the gaming platform.

The concert was a continuation of previous in-game concerts with rapper Travis Scott and Marshmello.

While these events were one-off experiences, the Grande event was tied to many aspects of the platform, from the way the tour was announced, to its ties to aliens and Fortnite’s iconic moments and images.

“The sequence started as players surfed the rainbow racetrack scooping up power ups at the intersection of Mario Kart and Splatoon,” describes Tech Crunch. After the race track sequence, players bounced through the landscape in Dr. Seuss with candy pink trees and giant floating eyeballs before throwing them into a mini-game where boss Storm King was shot down into “Victorious” Wolfmothers.”

“Finally, tall Grande appeared in a black room lit by stars, taking players through an incredibly surreal world,” explains The Verge. “There were giant floating bubbles in the sky, a sparkling llama ride, MC Escher-style castle, and finally a pop star emerging from a crack in the ground to crush all her fans with a jeweled hammer.”

Grande even looked like a Fortnite character, The Verge noted, with glowing white eyes and a dress made of glistening shards of glass. You can of course purchase a skin to play in-game with it.

Earlier this year, Epic’s Creative Director Donald Mustard described Fortnite as “the possibility of almost creating a new medium.”

In addition to the gigs, Fortnite also released Scott’s outfits, emotes, gear, and other accessories to buy which helped the rapper get neat, estimated at $ 20 million. Fortnite has also collaborated on in-game items and events with characters and people from Marvel’s most famous IPs to star athletes like Neymar.

How to watch the Ariana Grande concert in Fortnite

You should be able to watch an Ariana Grande concert in Fortnite just by logging into the game, although Epic Games recommends running the game one hour before the scheduled time of the show you want to watch. If you have difficulty finding a program, you should find help on the special Rift Tour tab that should be available on the home screen.

It is also worth noting that there is a maximum capacity for this event, although Epic Games has not confirmed what the number of users is. Still, it’s reason enough to make sure you’re in the game – ready and waiting – as early as possible.

After months of rumors, it was confirmed – pop sensation Ariana Grande will host a Fortnite concert, and Epic Games will release a trailer, start date and time to make the news official.

The Fugees Cancel Reunion Tour Citing Pandemic Conditions

“One of the questions we always ask [coworkers] at the very beginning is what you always wanted to do but couldn’t because of any constraints, be it gravity or sitting or whatever. Whether they are athletes, writers, musicians, directors or even comedians, we see our space as a place to do the impossible, ”said The Hollywood Reporter. “From that moment on, the sky is the limit.”

Yet in this weekend Rift Tour event, not even the sky feels like a creative ceiling, with Grande’s gigantic, captured in motion manifestation literally shattering the heavens with its dazzling gem smasher. Rampulla praised both Grande and the Rift Tour team for their ability to “take the emotions of the music and translate them into real 3D spaces.”

“Especially the way it manifests itself in the world – the actual relationship when it reaches you and only you, I think is something special,” he said. “[The project] was about not only about things like Piggy Smallz, but also tracking [Ariana Grande]’s journey and going through the glass ceiling – everything about the overall impression really came from her vision of her music.”

Much like Scott’s creatively standout “Astronomical” performance, Grande fans can stay where they are and, if they’ve purchased some emotes, show off their dance moves. But they can also run, jump and swim independently. At the very end, players can even pick up a little flying unicorn.

Much of what players see and do depends on the part of the setlist (which includes the approximately one-minute passages from “7 Rings”, “Be Alright”, “REM”, “The Way” featuring Mac Miller and “Positions”) in which are currently located. One location gives players the ability to navigate the Grande-style rendering of MC Escher’s “Relativity”, while others allow participants to walk on the water with the singer or chase her through a cloud of bubbles.

But in the new addition, the Rift Tour is also intended for those who might be there for more than just a visually immersive mo-cap based show. Pre-purchase items inspired by Grande, such as the Sweetener Sailshards glider, Ariana Grande’s outfit and the Goddess variant, as well as the ‘7 rings’ smashing pickaxe, can be played in three locations.

“There are different ways to experience it, and I think it’s the spirit of many things that we’re going to try and push,” said Rampulla. “We know no two people are alike, so we want to make sure that the more we create, there is something for everyone, and there is a different way you can experience this creation.”

Once players are drawn into the rift and receive a personal greeting along the way, their character will have the opportunity to race through the colorful and splashing World of Wrap before hopping onto a biplane to face the Storm King, the electrifying monster of the Fortnite: Nightmare Czar 2019 event.

Virtual Concerts Generate Serious Profits

In addition to the gigs, Fortnite also released Scott’s outfits, emotes, gear, and other accessories to buy which helped the rapper get neat, estimated at $ 20 million. Fortnite has also collaborated on in-game items and events with characters and people from Marvel’s most famous IPs to star athletes like Neymar.

There are others who follow in the footsteps of (lucrative) Fortnite. Last November, another online gaming company, Roblox, held a virtual concert of Lil Nas X, whose songs were popularized by TikTok, which was attended by 33 million people (the number of unique users is unknown).

While it is uncertain how much money Ariana Grande will receive from her concert, many media outlets, including Forbes, predict that she will receive over the $ 20 million that Travis Scott reportedly received.

That figure is also a big step over the 400.7 million maximum per-gig revenue from Travis Scott’s 2018 and 2019 tours. Moreover, the entire tour is said to have generated $ 53.5 million in revenue, meaning Travis Scott earned about 37 percent of his four-month tour in just nine minutes – roughly the amount of the virtual event that lasted.

Moreover, a traditional concert often requires significant preparatory work such as choreography, rehearsals, venue booking, soundchecks, lighting design, stage design, background dancers, etc., all of which can be costly before the singer even gets in to the stage. However, in a Fortnite Virtual Concert, while it requires some artists to work and collaborate, a lot of the visuals are done by Epic’s animators with minimal personal preparation and much lower overhead.

Of course, there are significant differences between real and virtual events for artists and their fans, but from a business point of view, virtual events are much more profitable.

Pop Cultural Milestones, the Metaverse, and the Future

While the term “metaverse” is often used to describe Fortnite’s virtual events, including Ariana Grande’s concerts, these virtual events are technically not a metaverse as they do not meet some of the key criteria that are currently widely agreed to guarantee such a description. One such limitation is the fact that a Fortnite Virtual Concert can only show 50 people in the same virtual space, no matter how many people are connected simultaneously (compared to 100 in normal FPS).

Matthew Ball, former head of strategy at Amazon Studios and managing partner at EpyllionCo, sums it up neatly in his blog: “Metaverse is an expansive network of persistent, real-time 3D worlds and simulations that support the continuity of identities, objects, data, and permissions that can be synchronously experienced by a virtually unlimited number of users.”

Unfortunately, entertainment has always been limited by the limitations of technology. For example, before the invention of the game console, games could not be stored for further play, and it is thanks to technology that we now have games like “The Legend of Zelda” and “Final Fantasy VII” that allow for long periods of gameplay.

The same goes for the music industry. Music has evolved with its distribution technology, from radio broadcasts to recordings, from tapes to discs, digital downloading and streaming, all of these transitions have had an impact, all the way down to the fundamental aspects of music such as song length and audience. Currently, the newest form of music distribution is TikTok. The social platform has given rise to many hits and has made the artists a real celebrity. In fact, many musicians now write songs specifically with the intention of getting viruses on TikTok.

With the evolution of the metaverse, a new form of music distribution could emerge, and to be honest, we can’t wait to see it.

A new costume for Drift?

Rift Tour new Drift skin

Is this a new background Drift skin?

This one is for fans of the Fortnite tradition. In a touching scene before the arrival of Ariana Grande, where players helped revive fallen allies, the character to pick you up is Drift, who is deeply connected to Kevin the Cube.

We’re about to get into that big teaser, but some eagle-eyed fans have noticed what feels like a new outfit for Drift in the background where he has black hair. Could this mean Drift will return in a future storyline? Or maybe as a new skin in the item shop?

Kevin the Cube is returning

A trip to Fortnite Rift - Kevin the Cube

Kevin the Cube is set to return for a long-awaited return.

Fortnite fans have predicted this for a while, but a brief moment at the start of the Rift Tour confirmed that “Kevin the Cube” will indeed be back by the end of Chapter Two.

In the screenshot above, you can almost see the iconic purple cube. For those who don’t know, this strange object wreaked havoc on the island in Season X, but remains a mystery to this day.

Of all the Fortnite memories that pop up during this opening scene, it seems to be the one that alien invaders are looking for. More interestingly, the image shows Kevin’s cube on the current island.

After the Rift Tour is over, many players will be looking to the future. What consequences does this event have for the rest of the Fortnite world?
