The new processors provide retailers, healthcare, digital signage, industrial automation, and other edge designers with unprecedented control over the platform, enabling them to seamlessly transition from peak productivity to creative task completion.

With up to eight cores of each type – supporting multiple execution threads – developers can consolidate multiple workloads on a single device. For example, a modern POS system can analyze video and perform price checks using object recognition algorithms on Performance Cores, while Efficient Cores simultaneously read barcode scans, count receipts and accept payments.

Alder Lake

The company has been presenting the features of the Olchowe Lake since last year’s Architecture Day. As announced at this year’s event, Alder Lake will be Intel’s first high-performance hybrid architecture with the new Intel Thread Director. It is the first Intel chip to use Intel 7 technology to use the same technology as the company’s current 10nm technology. Alder Lake will offer a combination of the performance and efficiency of x86 cores. Alder Lake-based products will begin shipping this year.

One of the major hurdles Intel has encountered with its hybrid processor architecture design is the most efficient multi-thread management. Additional analysis is required when there are two cores of different performance and performance. To remedy this, Intel announced the director of threads. This is a unique planning approach that ensures that efficient and productive cores work together, intelligently assigning loads from the outset and optimizing the system for the highest actual performance. Thread Director is built right into the core and works with the operating system to put the right thread at the right time.

Ponte Vecchio and Alchemist SoCs

Ponte Vecchio is, as Intel admits, a more complex SoC chip. This is possible thanks to the open, standards-based, multi-architecture, unified software stack, OneAPI, and based on technologies such as advanced Intel semiconductor processors, EMIB technology and Foveros 3D packages. With the Ponte Vecchio, Intel introduces a 100 billion transistor device that delivers industry-leading FLOP drives and compute density to execute AI applications, high-performance computing, and advanced analytical workloads. Moreover, Ponte Vecchio broke the industry record for inference and training performance in the popular AI benchmark.

Another major SoC announced at the event was the Alchemist SoC based on Xe HPG (previously codenamed DG2). In addition, Intel announced the Xe HPG, a new discrete graphics microarchitecture designed for gaming and development.

Unlike laptops, many people buy Alder Lake desktop processors themselves – this makes prices much more appropriate. Here’s what you can expect for all the chips we’ve seen so far in the US, along with rough UK conversions:

Interestingly, Intel’s 12th-generation U-series chips can be found in more affordable laptops and in next-generation designs.

Intel announced its “Foldable Display Spec” at CES, which is the public brand of “Project Horseshoe Bend,” a loosely linked group including Intel, Samsung and Microsoft working to establish guidelines for PCs with foldable displays (similar to the Lenovo X1 Fold, though Lenovo it technically does its job in this space).

The folding display specs include Intel Evo specs, fanless designs, Samsung’s 17 inch OLED folding displays, and are hitting the market this year from some of the top manufacturers.

Intel 12th generation buyers from the U2 seriesSkusy Intel 12th generation U1 series

Taking a closer look at the U-Series SKUs, there are ten options besides the Pentium and Celeron. There are actually five, but Intel is doubling up as half are for enterprise (Windows 11 Pro) with Intel vPro and the other five are for consumer laptops (Windows 11 Home) without Intel vPro.

The Core i7-1265U features 10 cores and 12 threads, reaching 4.8 GHz.

The jewel chip in the crown is a Core i7-1265U, which is still not humped, packing a massive 10 cores and 12 threads, hitting 4.8GHz. The base power is 15 watts, but it can be peak or it can be configured to reach 55 watts by OEMs. Core i5 chips also have 10 cores / 12 threads, with only the Core i3 going down to 6 cores and 8 threads.

Considering all previous Intel U-series notebook processors had 4 cores and 8 threads, this is an impressive advance.

AMD’s answer to the Core i7-1265U is the new Ryzen 7 6800U. These are a bit more difficult to compare as Intel has 10 cores (compared to AMD’s 8), while AMD leads with 16 threads (compared to just 12 with Intel). Intel is slightly faster at 4.8 GHz instead of AMD’s 4.7 GHz.

In addition to next-gen foldable PCs, look for the U-series in mid-to-high-end thin and light laptops.

Wrapping up: Intel is looking strong for 2022

While Intel continues to dominate the area of premium thin and light laptops, it has given way to AMD in gaming due to the latter’s improved performance and performance. This now seems to be coming to light with the 12th Generation Intel series that changes the entire chip design to balance performance and efficiency through load sharing.

Intel continues to gain additional benefits with the Evo platform, exclusivity for Thunderbolt 4 (AMD now uses USB 4.0 as an alternative), and existing OEM partner relationships. That said, in line with the continuing trend, expect the same PC manufacturers to further diversify AMD’s designs this year, including so-called “A&A” laptops where AMD is used in the CPU and GPU for unparalleled performance.

We’ll have to wait to test and evaluate battery life with Intel’s latest generation 12 chips, but if they’re similar to the latest desktop chipsets, there’s plenty to get excited about in 2022.

On the other hand, ARM processors are perfect for mobile devices because they reduce the amount of energy needed to keep the system running and perform tasks commissioned by the user.

Processor Speed

ARM chips are usually slower than their Intel counterparts because their processing is low. While most users would not notice the difference in their devices, Intel processors are designed with faster processing in mind.

Overall, using more cores and caches in ARM processors has proven to be an effective way to keep energy consumption lower with increased speed. There is more, but this is the basic idea.

Android Processors

Intel was once part of a handful of Android mobile devices, but ARM processors still reign supreme in this market.

Asus Transformer Pad TF103C

Intel-based devices can run the full range of Android applications, even those initially written for the ARM architecture. However, an application with ARM-specific code must be translated before execution. This scenario takes time and energy, so battery life and overall performance may suffer. Whether this is a major issue is under debate: our reviews indicate Intel tends to lag behind ARM in terms of battery life. Still, the difference isn’t that big, and the overall performance is excellent overall.

In any case, Intel is working hard to get developers to build native versions of their applications, so hopefully the translation will gradually become less of a problem.

In conclusion, there are many factors to consider when comparing ARM and Intel processors. Whether one is better than the other still depends on the intended use of the device and energy consumption.

How much do Intel Alder Lake CPUs cost?

Unlike laptops, many people buy Alder Lake desktop processors themselves – this makes prices much more appropriate. Here’s what you can expect for all the chips we’ve seen so far in the US, along with rough UK conversions:

  • Core i9-12900K – $ 589 (about £ 430)
  • Core i9-12900KF – $ 564 (about £ 410)
  • Core i7-12700K – $ 409 (around £ 300)
  • Core i7-12700KF – $ 384 (around £ 280)
  • Core i5-12600K – $ 289 (about £ 210)
  • Core i5-12600KF – $ 264 (about £ 190)

These are only recommended prices, so you can pay more or less depending on the seller you choose. The prices of the 22 new processors announced at CES 2022 have yet to be disclosed.

Intel Alder Lake specs & features

Alder Lake is making big changes to Intel’s silicon. These are the first processors to go beyond the 14nm process the company introduced in 2015. The new 10nm process has been renamed Intel 7, part of a new Architecture Roadmap announced in July 2021.

Desktop CPUs

Intel has also changed the structure of its processors to be more compatible with ARM-based chips (including Apple’s M1 series). There is now a mix of performance and energy-saving cores, rather than focusing solely on creating the most powerful chip possible. This hybrid model should allow devices to maintain performance over a longer period of time as well as extend battery life. After disappointing reviews of the 11th Generation Rocket Lake chips, this change is welcome.

Intel Alder Lake

However, as expected, you’ll need a new motherboard. Here’s Intel’s new Z690, although an upgraded cooler may also be needed to support the LG 1700 socket. You get at least Wi-Fi 6E and USB 3.2 Gen 2 for high-speed data transfer. Thunderbolt 4 support also remains.

There are also encouraging signals from Alder Lake’s first real gaming test, even though the CPU has been paired with the latest Nvidia RTX GPUs and DDR5 memory to maximize performance. As noted by the German website Computerbase, the CapFrameX test of the web-based strategy game Dota suggests that Alder Lake can max FPS above 549, averaging over 120 FPS. However, we do not know what resolution or settings were used when recording these numbers.

If you’re a desktop user and considering high-end CPUs, Alder Lake’s latest benchmarks compare favorably with AMD’s equivalent chips. According to Twitter leaked @OneRaichu, the early model of the top Core i9-12900K excels in tests using the Cinebench R20 software:

– Raichu (@OneRaichu) July 20, 2021

The processor in question here was placed in a water cooler to prevent overheating, with another tweet confirming that the extra “S” was a bug. According to Guru3D, it performs significantly better than the Ryzen 9 5950X (AMD’s current flagship processor) in both single-threaded (26%) and multi-threaded (11%) modes. A lot can change between now and the end product, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Since their launch, we’ve seen some impressive benchmarks of Alder Lake processors, most notably the Core i7-12700H. The Geekbench 5 results suggest it is almost as powerful as AMD’s high-end Ryzen 9 5900X, while Cinebench’s multi-core results put it ahead of the Ryzen 9 5900HX and Apple M1 Max – according to testing by NotebookCheck.

Mobile CPUs

In total, we expect 60 processors from Intel’s 12th generation range. In addition to the 28 desktop processors announced so far, 28 new mobile chips are also available. They will be available on many key laptops in 2022 and beyond.

They are divided into three different categories. The first is Alder Lake-H, designed for enthusiast-level devices. Here is a summary of what it offers:
