Should you sell Groot or Rocket in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy by Square Enix is a fantastic single player game based on the comic book and movie Guardians of the Galaxy. However, unlike other Marvel games, this game contains elements from RPGs where you have to make a decision and that decision can affect the specific outcome. We’ll cover one such case in this guide, however, before we go any further, I’d like to inform you that it’s a spoiler.

At the beginning of the game you will meet Lady Hellbender and you will have to sell one of your teammates: Rocket or Groot. Depending on what you do, it will be easier for you, one will cause some trouble.

Why are you selling off your teammates?

When you meet Lady Hellbender, she takes an interest in Groot. Having no way out of the scenario, you have to make a choice. The problem is, Groot thinks selling it is best for the team. While Rocket just wants to protect Groot, you can see this become a problem. Fortunately, both outcomes are favorable to you.

In an attempt to help Rocket and Yondu Udonty escape The Ravagers’ cell, Baby Groot was asked to find the Yaka Arrow Undonty to help them all escape.

Deeproot Plant – Chapter 13

After unlocking the fire setting for Star-Lord’s Elemental Gun, players will soon come across a large area with lots of poisonous plants that they must destroy in order to follow the path forward. After jumping over the tree at the beginning of this location, turn right immediately.

Shoot the poison plant at the end of this path and then look to the right. The collector’s collection of Deeproot Plant Groot sits atop a rocky surface protruding from the side of a cliff. Pick it up to complete Groot’s collectibles and unlock another conversation with him when you return to Milano.

In addition to helping you unlock trophies / achievements, finding all of a character’s personal collectibles will also change the Marvel’s Guardians of Galaxy ending, adding to the epilogue for that team member.

How did Rocket and Groot bond?

Rocket and Groot have such a bond that not only can Rocket understand the various intonations of “I’m Groot,” the pair had their own comic book series in 2016.

They are especially important to the team, Rocket was the one who gave the Guardians of the Galaxy their name and it was he who got Groot on board.

This plot appeared in comic books around the mid-2000s, and screenwriter-director James Gunn used elements of them in his scripts. Star-Lord’s team tries to escape through a drainage pipe that Groot couldn’t fit into. Groot dies, and this allows the team to escape. The new Groot was created as a branch. Over time, Groot’s body regenerated from the twig, returning to its full size.

In the movies, it’s “Baby Groot,” which stole the show at the very beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as he jumps up to “Mr. Blue Sky ”, unaware or not caring about the chaos around him. It was the highlight of the movie for many viewers, but the quieter scene caught the attention of some fans on Reddit.

What is the ‘Vol. 2’ scene between Groot and Rocket?

The theme starter on Reddit wrote:

“After Rocket sets traps in the woods for Berhert and waits for the Ravagers, you hear Rocket hum into the messenger for the song while Groot listens on the other end. I’ve seen this scene countless times, and just now it dawned on me that Rocket was humming to Groot to calm him down and let him know everything was fine. We can see that Groot is clearly upset and Rocket tries to calm him down. It’s just a great scene to show how Rocket is really the best father character for Groot.”

It may seem hard to imagine that Rocket is any father character, but he is definitely paternal to Groot, feeling responsible for him. While everyone on the team, especially Star-Lord, who also understands Groot, cares about him, the key bond is definitely between the tree and the raccoon.

On the Rocket forum it actually takes some heat, with one fan saying Rocket was using Groot as bait, but another fan said, “All the traps have been set up to keep the Ravagers from getting on the ship. Maybe Rocket thought it was the safest place for him. I don’t think Groot or the ship is being used as bait, I think he has set traps to keep them safe knowing lots of people are chasing them.”

Ultimately, no option is better. While they lead you on very different paths through the Monster Queen’s fortress, you can still find the same outfits and collectibles and still earn the same number of units. Okay, you either earn or steal them, but you can get 12,000 units regardless of the option you choose.

Should You Sell Rocket or Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy?

Choosing to sell Rocket or Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy results in different dialogues, a few different scenes and, most importantly, a different gameplay section before meeting the first boss. Selling rockets results in a combat section where you and the other Guardians try to escape from Lady Hellbender’s fortress by battling hordes of her guardians of different levels. Choosing to sell Groot results in a much shorter stealth sequence that leads straight to the boss.

If you prefer action and / or want extra experience to earn skill points, choose Rocket. If you prefer stealth and / or want to finish the chapter quickly, choose Groot. If you have already chosen, it is possible to change who you want to sell just before entering the fortress. Outside of gameplay sections, your choices don’t affect the rest of the game or the ending.

What Happens If You Sell Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy

Lady Hellbender is amused by Rocket and finds it cute, however she is not interested in buying it and considers it “worthless” and asks for Groot instead. Rocket is furious with her claim that he is not worth the Credits and does not want to put his best friend in danger, so he does what any sane person would do. He shoots her. Lady Hellbender calls her army to the Guardians, forcing them to break through the floor and traverse its fortress while fighting off swarms of her thugs. They reach a vault that has more than enough credits to pay off the fine, but are locked when gas is released into the vents. They eventually escape the crypt and reach The Dweller in the Dark, the first boss fight in the game.

Lady Hellbender offers enough credits to pay off the Ranger’s fine if Groot is chosen over Rocket. He takes Groot and the Rangers are given a room for the night, but the only places to sleep are the Rangers of Lady Hellbender. There is a short stealth section where the Rangers must save Groot. The Groot they found was actually a shape-shifting creature that leads them straight to Lady Hellbender and into the Dweller-in-Darkness boss fight. After that, there is no difference between the two choices, except for a small change in dialogue.
