Laptop deal buying tips

If you’ve purchased laptops on the Internet before, you likely realize that there is a wide variety of laptop configurations available.

The processor is a good place to start. Purchase laptops with Intel 10 series or later chips, such as Core i5-10510U or Core i7-11800H (for even more information, see our 10th Gen Intel Mobile Processor Buying Guide); or go with an AMD Ryzen processor (but not an AMD Athlon or A-series chip). Avoid laptops with Pentium or Celeron processors, unless it is a Chromebook (with Chrome OS). You’ll also need to pay attention to gaming laptops as some GPUs like the RTX 3050 Ti don’t offer much of a boost over their RTX 2xxx series cousins, and Nvidia has dropped the Max-Q label on some low-power options. A cheat sheet with CPU and GPU in a laptop can help you with smart shopping.

The display resolution is a real challenge. If you see a laptop labeled “HD” that means 1366 by 768, and it is often not worth your time for a laptop under 13 inches, unless the offer is absolutely unique. What you want is “Full HD” or “FHD” which means 1080p.

Don’t buy laptops with less than 4GB of RAM or 128GB of SSD storage – although on a Chromebook this setup is acceptable. We’ve got more explanations in our laptops compared to the Chromebook Buying Guide, as well as our guide on how to buy an inexpensive no-screw laptop. Also, be careful with eMMC memory, which we don’t recommend for a Windows laptop but works fine on a Chromebook.

Reviews can be helpful. Even if you can’t find an overview of your specific configuration, try the related models. They often give a good idea of the build quality and performance. Also buy from trusted brands. Amazon’s daily laptop deals are currently full of brands that we’ve never tested or talked to (Broage, Teclast, DaySky, Jumper), and it’s worth being cautious.

Most older laptops will run Windows 10, and that’s fine – there’s no rush to upgrade. Windows 10 in S Mode, while annoying, can be easily disabled if you find it on an inexpensive laptop. If you want to buy a Windows 10 PC with the intention of upgrading to Windows 11, we recommend starting here with a list of older laptops that qualify for Windows 11.

Updated January 25 with additional offers and to remove expired offers.

You can buy still new 2021 models from companies like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, and Samsung, with some big savings if you know where to look. Luckily for you, we know where to look – so we’ve gathered the best deals available for the models we recommend, based on our in-house testing and industry expertise.

When You’ll See the Best Laptop Deals

So when is the best time to make a purchasing decision? The Clark Deals team is looking for the best laptop prices available since 2016. We took the time to review the listings we posted in 2016-2020 to see when the most offers came out in those years.

No wonder that most offers appeared in November around Black Friday. Companies such as Best Buy, Dell, and Lenovo also offer deals throughout the rest of the year.

It is quite common to see some random laptop deals or specials every month, especially in February, June and August. So if you have time before needing to buy, be sure to watch prices for a while. This gives you the best idea of how much the laptop that you want typically costs and what a good selling price is for your particular model.

If you come across an offer that’s much lower than what you’ve seen in the past, don’t be afraid to grab it! Many of these deals are overnight deals.

How to Get the Best Price on a Laptop

Whether you’re shopping during holiday discounts or trying to find the best price at other times of the year, there are a few things you can do to save as much money as possible. Before making a purchase at any time, please do the following:

  • Price comparison! Use a tool like Google Shopping and search for the laptop you are thinking of. Check the prices available in other stores right before making your purchase so that you don’t miss a better offer.
  • Check the price history of the item. Websites like Camelcamelcamel are great for comparing the current laptop price with prices that have been tracked in the past. Of course, nothing beats watching the price on a specific laptop yourself!
  • Eliminate fake reviews. Tools like Fakespot can help you figure out how good a laptop is at Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and more. If fake reviewers contributed to the rating, websites like Fakespot can let you know if most reviews of an item are credible.

When you’re looking for the best deal, don’t be afraid to buy refurbished laptops if you don’t need a new model in particular. Be sure to read Warranty, Returns, and Seller Information before purchasing.

ClarkDeals.com Senior Editor Charis Brown adds: “The most important thing I can warn people about is to avoid over-buying of features. Most people can handle a 4GB Chromebook .. and it would be a good idea to check the prices of the model you’re looking for before taking this step.”

So, suppose you found a discount on a laptop you like during one of these time periods. How would you know if you are getting a great deal or just a small discount that won’t save you that much money? Well, some of the strategies you may want to consider include:

What to look for in laptop deals

Right now, there are often decent savings on Microsoft’s Surface products as the company tries to change Intel’s older models. The same often applies to other brands, and a device that is only the previous generation is still new enough to be purchased and will last for many years.

Retailers like Currys PC World, John Lewis, Argos, and AO almost always have tons of laptop deals. With the right offer, you’ll be able to buy a semi-decent machine for around £ 300 instead of £ 500, for example – not bad.

You may also notice price cuts on budget laptops, but remember you get what you pay for – they may be okay for browsing the web and Netflix, but they’ll be slow and unreliable for something harder than that. This is especially true of Chromebooks, which combine low specs with a simple operating system at wallet-friendly prices, but with a slightly more limited feature set.

Higher-ticket items like the Surface Pro or HP ultrabooks can still be expensive and cost around £ 800 or more, but you can save hundreds on the suggested retail price. Check out our dedicated rundown of the best Microsoft Surface deals.

Apple’s MacBooks are a bit harder to get discounts as offers are rare, but you can often pick a model that is one or two years old for less than the suggested retail price (and still delivers great performance), and it’s always worth checking out Official Refurbished Store Apple.

Amazon usually has some of the greatest deals. If you find that you are missing Amazon’s Lightning deals that only last a few hours and offer limited inventory, we recommend that you sign up for a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime which will give you access to the deals 30 minutes ahead of everyone else.

Plus, you’ll get free next-day shipping on the Prime Trial, as well as access to Prime Instant Video and more. Register with Prime now.

What should I look for in a new laptop?

Specifications and features necessary for a personal or work laptop depend on your specific profession and lifestyle. For example, a user looking for a machine that can create documents and send e-mail probably does not need the latest generation Intel® Core ™ i9 processors. However, a design professional who uses CAD software regularly has a much greater need for computing power and a processor that can keep up.

With that in mind, it’s important to understand the different options available in the laptop deals section of the HP Store. By using the specs and features guide below, you can better understand what you might want or need for your device.

1. Laptop type

For many people, the traditional seashell is the right choice. Portable and efficient, a regular laptop is perfect if you don’t need extra features or extras.

However, keep in mind that there are other types of laptops available. For example, some users may benefit from a 2-in-1 laptop that gives you the best of both worlds of a regular laptop and tablet. The 2-in-1 device provides laptop-level computing power and a powerful operating system, but keeps your tablet portable when needed.

Tablets come in handy when you’re out in the field taking notes or packing for a trip where space is at a premium, and are lightweight enough to carry with you all day when you’re on the go.

For example, HP Specter x360 laptops offer a 360-degree hinge so you can sketch quick ideas in tablet mode, send email in traditional laptop mode, and present your winning presentation in tent mode. Designed with flexibility in mind, this device is perfect for the modern professional.

Whether you need a traditional laptop or a modern 2-in-1 laptop, there is a wide range of high-performance machines that can work as hard as you do at the HP Store. In addition, our laptop sales section has many models that allow you to customize before you buy, so you can choose CPU, graphics card, memory capacity, memory, and your preferred hardware among others.

2. Screen and graphics

The laptop screen is a window to your professional and creative world, so it’s important to choose the right functions for it. For example, you may need a touch display to take advantage of the precision of an HP stylus, usually sold separately.

HP laptop displays are characterized by high resolution and various screen sizes. With vivid color ranges and realistic image possibilities, you can breathe life into your art projects or simply enjoy high visual quality that enhances your viewing experience.

3. Processor

Your CPU or CPU is an integral part of your laptop’s functions. HP laptops are equipped with processors such as Intel Core i3 or Intel Core i7, among others, which provide amazing performance without lag or interruptions.

Whether you need the latest eighth generation processor or an exact processor model such as the Core i7-9750h, there are powerful processors available for every budget.

4. RAM

Your RAM is your computer’s short-term memory, and the right amount is crucial for trouble-free processing. Lots of RAM comes in handy if you do a lot of multitasking and don’t want to experience annoying slowdowns or lags. Choose from 4 GB to 32 GB of memory or more. Remember, it’s a good rule of thumb to wander to the side of more RAM for the best PC experience. Read more about how much RAM you need in your laptop here.

What kind of laptop is right for me?

Laptops for entrepreneurs

Business professionals cannot afford an unreliable machine that can’t stand the days you have to burn oil at midnight to meet your deadline. Entrepreneurs need intuitive features that will improve their work. After all, no one wants to waste time or effort working harder than you, which can happen if you use poor technology. Check out the HP EliteBook series for the best processors, connectivity, graphics and customization options.

Laptops for artists and creatives

When you work in the design industry, your graphics card and display become a huge part of your workflow. It’s important to see the entire scope of your design on the screen, rather than feeling cramped and looking at your work piece by piece. That’s where a laptop like the HP ZBook comes in.

You can choose from 7th generation Intel Core or Intel Xeon processors that allow you to work quickly even on the most resource-intensive tasks. Enjoy advanced graphics and 4K touchscreens optimized to help you make the most of all your creative masterpieces.

You can complete your office workstation by adding a stylus to your setup. Adding a pen allows you to get the most out of your touchscreen. Draw, take notes, and quickly mark changes to a creative design with just a few stylus marks. Make sure you double-check that your touchscreen model includes a pen or that you need to purchase this accessory separately.

Laptops for students

As a high school, college, or college graduate student, it’s important to have the right technology to support your learning. Taking notes in class, writing essays, and emailing professors are core school assignments. Unfortunately, some laptops can be an expensive investment. However, by taking advantage of HP laptops, you can easily find an inexpensive device that will help you fulfill your academic dreams.

Check out the HP Chromebook family if you’re not sure where to start. HP Chromebooks function like enhanced Chrome Browsers, making them user-friendly and streamlined. With Chrome OS, users can access useful Chrome apps like Google Docs and Google Sheets to help you do your homework and make your graduation journey a little more fun.

Laptops for gamers

Gamers generally have some of the greatest computing needs. These types of users require powerful graphics and fast processors to play computer games, many of which are resource-intensive. To meet these high demands, gamers can review laptop sales at the HP Store for Laptop Families such as HP OMEN Laptops. Designed with gaming in mind, these machines can give you a competitive edge by allowing you to be more responsive than your opponent.

A mobile gaming platform is not complete without accessories. So make sure you check out all kinds of external peripherals you can add to complete your battle station, such as gaming mice, speakers, and headsets to work out a strategy with your fellow online teammates.

Laptops for general use

Are you looking for a personal laptop to stream, email, and create documents? Well, you may find HP Pavilion laptops are a great choice. With powerful computing power and great graphics, you can enjoy your day off watching your favorite shows or connecting with loved ones via Skype. These simple and durable laptops are ideal computers for general use.

Your timeline influences how you buy a new laptop. Most of the year’s best deals will be available during holiday periods, including Memorial Day and, of course, Black Friday. It’s always worth checking before Amazon Prime Day and around the school season.

What You Need To Look Out For

Now that you know when to buy a laptop, you also need to keep in mind other factors that will determine the type of laptop you will receive.

Specify the type of laptop you want. After setting up for a specific model, decide among other things the display size that will suit your goals, then the resolution, portability, CPU capabilities, battery life, and port compatibility, among other things. Once you are sure of all these features, you can finally start looking for the best deals.

So, suppose you found a discount on a laptop you like during one of these time periods. How would you know if you are getting a great deal or just a small discount that won’t save you that much money? Well, some of the strategies you may want to consider include:

1. Using a price-history tool:

Look out for sites that track price changes over time. They are a great way to determine if the current laptop price is actually the lowest it has ever been to one particular retailer.

2. Visiting deal news sites:

These sites keep an up-to-date list of laptop prices and additionally warn you of the best deals through their posts. Some highly recommended deal news sites are Laptopmag.com and techbargains.com.

3. Information from user reviews:

User reviews are very helpful especially when trying to find the best laptop deal. However, there are plenty of fake reviews out there that are designed to raise the ratings of the seller’s website. If you’re buying a laptop on Amazon, you can use Fakespot, a site that helps you distinguish fake reviews from the real ones. Always look for real laptop reviews.

Another important reminder is to test your laptop before you buy it. Many major retailers such as Apple, Microsoft Store, and Best Buy allow you to test the various features of different laptop models before making your purchase. However, if stopping over with a local retailer is not possible, consider purchasing a laptop from an online store that has a strong return policy.

Final Thoughts

The best time to make a purchase on a laptop depends on the many variants. You will find the best deals at the end of summer, in spring or during the holiday season at the end of the year.

However, if you are looking forward to a specific feature in the latest models, get a laptop early in these seasons.

Otherwise, you should definitely consider monitoring when your favorite manufacturing company releases new products and whether or not older products are recalled from the market.
