Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (for PC)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a fresh start that the series desperately needed. This reboot of a modern classic has everything people used to love about the CoD franchise and provides an exciting foundation for the series.

  • Perfect shooting action.
  • Fun campaign.
  • Robust multiplayer modes.
  • Top-notch graphics.
  • Cross-platform game with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players.
  • Unlimited frames per second.

The Call of Duty series has experienced an identity crisis in recent years. From adventure in space, a return to WWII, and a focus on Battle Royale, the series has gone a long way from making it an excellent first-person shooter franchise. While Call of Duty games still dominate sales, publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward felt the need to relive the heyday of the Modern Warfare franchise with the relaunch of the groundbreaking 2007 title. The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has the action-packed single-player modes and extensive multiplayer modes you’d expect from the series. It successfully removes all redundant elements and provides an experience that even non-shooting fans can enjoy.

The Modern Warfare campaign focuses on the American CIA, British SAS and freedom fighters who unite to counter Russian forces that invaded the fictional country of Urzikstan. As the narrative unfolds, you jump between the three playable characters: CIA officer Alex (no name), SAS Sergeant Kyle Garrick, and Rebel leader Farah Karim. Though ultimately united by one purpose, each character presents a different view of war. This multi-character structure prevents the story and gameplay from becoming repetitive.

Call of Duty stories are known to emphasize the Michael Bay style of over-action. While Modern Warfare has quite a few bombastic sets, the story is definitely toned down compared to the previous parts of the game. It is clear that Infinity Ward wanted a more realistic representation of modern warfare; not only do you fight terrorists and soldiers but you have to do it without killing civilians. The plot often confronts players with difficult moral dilemmas that do not have clear solutions. The emphasis on realism makes the narrative a truly shocking and engaging experience.

It decides to give up the planet and all the explorers of ethos in the quete d’amis.

Call of Duty: Vanguard graphics settings

Call of Duty: Vanguard offers a range of options that you can adjust to see which graphics settings are best suited to your gear. If you have a high refresh rate monitor, the game allows you to choose the refresh rate in your display settings. Besides, it also offers a frame rate limiter that can be set manually depending on the system. It also lets you play with the 16:10, 16: 9, 21: 9 or 32: 9 aspect ratio. It also gives you a handle to adjust the field of view (FOV), which essentially increases the height and width of the bezel. The default value is 80 and can be increased to 120. Note that increasing FOV can affect FPS and can also cause motion sickness in some people.

Vanguard provides five different quality settings for graphics, starting with Low and climbing the ladder with Low, Medium, High, and finally Ultra. It also provides the option to adjust the rendering resolution. Basically it represents the definition level of rendering a 3D scene around the map and other elements. Decreasing the value may improve performance, and increasing the parameter value may improve the image quality. The lowest value it can go to is 66 and the highest is 200. This has a huge impact on VRAM, so choose accordingly.

It provides tons of detail and texture options with graphics options such as texture resolution, texture anisotropic filter, particle quality level, particle resolution, bullet impact and sprays, shading quality, tessellation and many more. As for lightning, you can adjust the shadows of the screen space which essentially increase or decrease the level of detail of the shadows. It also allows you to change the shadow map resolution, which allows you to set the level of detail in the shadows. The game also gives a brief explanation of all the settings so anyone can easily analyze these jargons.

Call of Duty: Vanguard also supports FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0, which is AMD’s spatial scaling technology that offers frame rate increases with a marginal impact on image quality. It offers four different presets, ranging from Performance, Balanced, Quality and Ultra Quality. This has a huge impact on VRAM as well. Along with FidelityFX, it also provides the FidelityFX CAS option which improves the sharpness of the scene. In order for this to work properly, Vanguard insists that you disable any sharpening methods that are already enabled in your graphics card settings.

Besides, Vanguard also supports Nvidia Reflex Low Latency technology. You can turn it off or on completely. You also get a third option which is On + Boost. Enabling Low Latency mode optimizes system latency, while On + Boost increases the GPU clock speed in CPU-related cases. It also increases the amount of power drawn from the GPU.

Vanguard also supports Resolution Multiplier, so you can enjoy your game in 4K even if you don’t have a 4K monitor. Basically, this renders the game at 3840×2160 and then scales it to 1920×1080. This could also have a huge impact on VRAM, and the game suggests keeping the native display resolution.

Call of Duty: Vanguard campaign PC performance

For this game, our test kit consisted of an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz CPU, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super GPU with 6 GB VRAM, Full HD 1080p monitor with 144 Hz refresh rate, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB NVMe SSD on Windows 10 (21H1). We used all the latest drivers for the Nvidia card and for Windows. The game was tested with FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0 and FidelityFX CAS turned off.

As mentioned before, the game allows you to try out five different graphics settings. With the graphics options set to “Lowest”, we managed to get an average of 115 fps, and the maximum frame rate reached 190 fps. We saw some frame rate drops at times when there were huge explosions, but it didn’t drop below 135fps. No wonder, as our test device exceeds all Activision minimum requirements.

Moving up, we tried the ‘Low’ graphics setting which managed to average 96fps with the maximum frame rate hitting 118fps. We also noticed a few random drops to 79fps near the explosion, as well as when multiple bullets were fired in tandem. He managed to stay between 95-110fps most of the time. Then we tried the “Medium” setting. This template managed an average of 60 fps and the maximum frame rate reached 108 fps. The lowest frame rate measured with this setting was around 58 fps.

The next graphic settings, “High”, tested our hardware properly. It averaged 54 fps and the maximum frame rate was around 86 fps, while the lowest achieved was 43 fps in close combat and shootings. Last but not least, the ‘Ultra’ graphics setting coped on average at around 50fps with steady drops to 41-43fps in combat. The maximum frame rate achieved with this setting was 68 fps.

Call of Duty: Vanguard multiplayer, Zombies PC performance

In Call of Duty: Vanguard, you can also experience two additional modes. We played both multiplayer and Zombies on High settings at 1080p. We managed to hit an average of around 64fps in Zombies mode, with the maximum frame rate reaching 88fps and the lowest reaching around 53fps as the zombie horde come running towards you.

It was a fun experience for a multiplayer. The average FPS our tester achieved with the “High” setting was around 71, with the maximum being 80fps and the lowest reaching 57fps during close combat and grenade blasts.

Should you buy Call of Duty: Vanguard on PC?

Call of Duty: Vanguard offers two editions for PC: Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition. The Standard Edition of the game costs $ 59.99 (about Rs 4,470), while the Ultimate Edition costs $ 99.99 (about Rs 7.408).

The Ultimate Edition offers the Task Force One Pack (3 Operator Skins and 3 Weapon Schematics with Tracer Rounds), the Battle Pass Pack (1 Season Battle Pass + 20 Level Jump), 5 Hours 2 XP. The asking price is high, especially in the Ultimate version, but the campaign and the multiplayer modes are fun and the graphics are really good if you have a computer that can run the game at medium to high settings.

Unlike some of the other Call of Duty titles, namely Warzone and Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard doesn’t ask for a lot of storage space – around 50GB, including the campaign mode as I said before. And if you’re a fan of multiplayer, you won’t be disappointed as it also supports cross-platform play. If you have friends on Xbox or PlayStation, you can drop by the lobby and become one of the “Avantgarde”. Our Call of Duty: Vanguard review is coming soon, read on to find out what we think about the game.
