Can GTA 5 work without a graphics card?

Have you just purchased Grand Theft Auto 5 but are not sure if your computer is capable of running the game? Before you worry about it, first think about what you mean when you launch the game. It’s important to define what you mean before looking for your computer’s system specifications. Most computers manufactured after 2015 usually have the newer combination of specifications, and some may even have integrated graphics cards installed on the computer. According to Rockstar Games, the developer of GTA, the recommended minimum requirement to run GTA 5 is a graphics card. But what if you don’t have one? Can I run GTA 5 without a graphics card?

The answer is yes and no. It depends on the quality you want the game to run. You can run Grand Theft Auto 5 without a graphics card. However, you may need to play it back at low 720p settings to get playable frames. You may have to adjust the settings to get better frames. Of course, the game could or would work better if you follow the recommended minimum specs to run GTA 5. However, many players have confirmed that even adhering to the minimum specs does not help the game run well enough as it is a huge game.

In today’s article, we will provide a guide on how to find your computer’s system specification. Next, we’ll compare it to the minimum requirements of Grand Theft Auto 5 to see what works best for launching the game. Finally, we will also share the expectations of launching GTA 5 with a graphics card, with an integrated graphics card, and also without a graphics card. If this is your first time getting to know the system specs, read on as it may help you cope with other games in the future as well!

Can GTA 5 Run Without A Graphics Card?

As mentioned above, it is possible to run Grand Theft Auto 5 without a graphics card. However, don’t expect fast loading or high definition frames. Resolutions will not be high definition compared to running the game with a graphics card. You may also need to adjust your settings to increase the graphics and frame rates. The higher the frame rate, the smoother the game will be. Remember that the game is huge. Recently, I checked that the game takes up about 72 GB of disk space, which is the game’s biggest drawback. So it is recommended to get a graphics card to make the game run better. Right from the start, I’d like to share a few details about the specification requirements recommended by Rockstar Games.

Why console settings are important

When comparing PC games to their console counterparts, our first task is usually to use the PC options menu to recreate the console experience. Why? Well, the developers are trying to get the maximum visual impact out of the console’s limited GPU resources – the best bang for your buck if you want. When adjusting the visuals of the console, the trade-offs that the developers made usually translate very well to more modest PC hardware, while providing an excellent basis for scaling with more efficient components. From there, the choice is yours. Are you looking for better visuals, better resolution, better anti-aliasing, or higher frames per second?

These settings allowed us to achieve very similar quality levels to the PS4:

In all cases, we recommend that you start working with these settings and then scale up to your liking and your equipment. The GTA 5 benchmark tool gives both the CPU and GPU a thorough training and should be good for tweaking your setup to perfection. Pay attention to the minimum frame rate – it is usually in the last sequence which is especially CPU intensive. Finish your tweaks by traveling north to Vinewood Hills, where the grass setting may need some tweaking to keep FPS consistently high.

The Best £100 Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB

The Radeon R7 260X AMD and GTX 750 Ti Nvidia are the graphics cards we recommend for PC gamers who want to match the rendering performance of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Cheap but efficient, the only downside to these cards is the 2GB VRAM limitation – to fit the current generation console we recommend 3GB or more. However, at £ 80-100, 2GB remains fairly generous, and with GTA 5 set up to our bests to tweak your PS4’s settings, both cards get the job done. Using very high-quality textures exceeds the limit of 2 GB cards, but even so, performance is not excessively diminished at this level.

With a Core i7 processor driving the flow of the process (effectively removing the processor as a bottleneck), both cards are able to exceed the 30fps limit set by the console versions in terms of average and minimum frames per second. The GTX 750 Ti is around eight percent more efficient here than its cheaper AMD counterpart, but the gameplay experience is the same. However, it’s really unlikely that gamers will pair a GPU under £ 100 with a £ 270 CPU, so we repeat testing again, this time using the £ 90 Core i3 4130. Result? Frames per second drop on the AMD card, and there’s noticeable stuttering in built-up areas where the CPU is really loaded – watch the video below to see the difference.

At this point, it’s no secret that the Nvidia driver uses less CPU time than its AMD counterpart – which is extremely important for weaker PCs with less powerful CPUs. It is important. AMD’s Radeon R9 270X is an excellent card – almost 40 percent more powerful in the GTA 5 than the GTX 750 Ti on a quad-core system, and only a few pounds more expensive than the 750 Ti when it’s on sale. However, on the dual-core Core i3 system, the stuttering is extreme and the minimum frame rate is not only lower than that of the GTX 750 Ti, but also lower than that of the R7 260X. AMD makes great hardware, but until the DX11 driver problem is resolved, we can only recommend Nvidia cards for computers with lower end CPUs.

Nvidia has another advantage as well: a really effective way to limit the frame rate to 30 frames per second. There are frame rate limiters that work on all GPUs, and GTA 5 even includes a half-speed vertical sync option, which should theoretically act as a 30fps limit. Neither of these options, however, guarantee a solid, steady 30fps with even framerate – something that GTA 5 achieves on consoles with apparent ease. Nvidia’s adaptive half-speed vertical sync does the job, delivering 30 frames per second on 750 Ti.

Both the AMD R7 260X and Nvidia’s GTX 750 Ti can match the overall visual experience offered by the console versions of GTA 5, despite the 2GB VRAM limitation. The AMD R9 270X offers much more power for just a few pounds more, but driver issues cause real problems on less powerful processors as you can see in the i3 indicators below.

1920×1080, console settings, FXAA. Core i3 4130 (Low / Medium FPS) Core i7 4790K (Low / Medium FPS)
GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB [?] 31.0 / 42.2 31.0 / 42.9
Radeon R7 260X 2GB [?] 28.0 / 38.6 30.0 / 39.4
Radeon R9 270X 2GB [?] 25.0 / 48.9 44.0 / 58.8

Respawn’s free-to-play Battle Royale was released on February 4, 2019, making this date an annual anniversary since its release. To celebrate this date, players usually receive an in-game event.

This year, Apex Legends Anniversary will coincide with the launch of Season 12 on February 8, and so far it seems that the third anniversary of the game will not be celebrated with an event, but rather with “Login Rewards.”

What to expect for Apex Legends’ Anniversary event

In the previous Anniversary Event, players were blessed with an entire Collector’s Event and reward tracker. This year, players will receive login rewards for February.

Beginning with the release of Season 12, players will receive rewards for three consecutive weeks:

  • february 8 – 15: Octane and three Theme Packs
  • february 15-22: Wattson and Three Theme Packs
  • february 22 – March 1: Valkyrie, three Theme Packs and one Legendary Pack

If you already own these Legends, players will still receive Theme Packs for them, which are essentially Apex Packs that guarantee items for that particular Legend.

Optimal Hardware Suggestions

The minimum specs are a source of confusion due to the age of the game. Since the release of Grand Theft Auto V six years ago, Rockstar has released countless updates to both the single-player parts and Grand Theft Auto Online, affecting quite drastically what is needed to keep the game running in decent condition.

As a result, the current minimum specs will struggle to hit more than 20fps, even at the lowest settings and lower resolutions. It is not conducive to enjoyable gameplay, and we strongly urge you to see Grand Theft Auto V in all its brutal glory.

We therefore recommend using the recommended requirements as an entry point to Grand Theft Auto V. With them, you can comfortably reach 50 to 60 FPS on high settings by running the game at 1080p. Of course, you can fix this by removing certain settings like anti-aliasing and texture levels. If you hit them north to ultra then the FPS will drop drastically and the game will struggle to hit above 25fps. In the case of 4K, the situation is very similar, with an even more pronounced drop in FPS.

Overall, the recommended specs aren’t very strict by today’s standards, and you can drastically improve performance by upgrading to a slightly better graphics card. Grand Theft Auto V is GPU dependent due to its long draw distances, so even with a weaker CPU and a decent GPU, you can achieve a comfortable FPS.

As an aside, Grand Theft Auto V may be six years old, but still requires a whopping 65GB of storage, so make the necessary preparations before installing.

What Gaming PC Do We Recommend?

As above, Intel Core i5 is more than adequate to support Grand Theft Auto V, but it would be best to tweak the GPU a bit to achieve higher resolutions and settings. Therefore, we recommend an NVIDIA GTX 1660 6GB graphics card or equivalent to be on the safe side. 8GB of RAM is more than adequate and should already be among the specs of most gaming PCs today. If you have some cash, your computer always uses more RAM, so go to 16GB if you can.

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 3470
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB

If you need to point in the right direction for a good foundation, we recommend our $ 500 or $ 600 builds. They use AMD components so you’ll save money right now, and the system is more than enough to run Grand Theft Auto V on ultra settings at 1080p with a solid 50-60 FPS, even during hot car chases or shootouts.
