The new offer of CD Projekt RED, Cyberpunk 2077, has been in preparation for a long time, but is almost there – with the exception of further delays.

The futuristic role-playing game, which is an adaptation of the Cyberpunk board game from the 1980s, has been in operation since 2012 and will be the developer’s first title outside of the Witcher series.

CD Projekt Red was founded in Warsaw in the 90s by two friends from high school, Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński, during the transformation and development of the gaming industry. (CD-ROMs were a cutting edge innovation at the time.) They both started importing games from the United States and essentially repackaging and republishing them in Poland.

“Before school was over, we both played truant, leaving school to play games,” Iwiński said in his oral history of the studio.

The first employees who spoke to The New York Times described the company’s leaders as skillful marketers, storytellers, and artistic visionaries. They said their enthusiasm for games often outstripped their engineering and technical skills. Employees spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

The company’s ambitions were astronomical at first, as were some of its failures. In the early years, CD Projekt Red created a game to develop The Witcher, a popular series of books by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, into an engaging series of video games.

But the first game of The Witcher, released in 2007, was bugged and had more features than it could handle. Former employees who worked on the game said it would take three to five minutes to load the basic screens.

Employees found that when developing games, there was a general approach to creating more things yourself, rather than sometimes licensing other so-called “middleware” – or supporting software – from other companies with more expertise. As a result, the developers created inferior versions of the functions that were refined by other companies.

Despite this, the Witcher series gained many fans and fans in the studio. The studio received the most recognition for The Witcher 3, which won awards for its detailed universe and rich storyline. As with previous titles, it was buggy right from the start, which frustrated players. CD Projekt Red is a Polish game producer that was founded in 1994. Based on the series of Wiezmen books by Andrez Sapkowski, popular in Poland, the game creator proposed a new set of book-based games, primarily in order to launch the company’s basic foundation, an offer that Sapkowski accepted.

After acquiring the franchise rights in 2002, CD Projekt Red started creating this new title with 15 people working on the project. Over time, the team quickly grew to around 100 people to produce the game at a cost of PLN 20 million, which translates to just over $ 5 million.

After 5 years of development, the game was ready. For an international audience, the game was titled The Witcher, a Single Game that eventually evolved into a entertainment phenomenon, garnering millions of sales and overall positive reviews.

Shortly after the premiere of The Witcher, CD Projekt Red quickly began turning this title into a series of games, a set of different projects within 8 years. The latest AAA release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is currently the third best video game of all time, according to IMDb.

The best video game of all time is DLC, Blood and Wine, while Hearts of Stone is the fifth best video game according to the ranked platform.

The success of The Witcher series has been tremendous, and it has turned into a TV series that premiered on Netflix in 2019.

The core of The Witcher series is simple but innovative. In short, it was one of the first series to use the concept of the open world in video games. The game locations were rich, deeply developed, and filled with a variety of missions and side-quests that sometimes came down to hours of total gameplay.

In fact, it has been reported that it can take over 150 hours to complete The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. With hundreds of missions, the amount of work put into developing the game to create the environment, record dialogue for character voices, animate every element of the game, and develop the mechanics has cost CD Projekt Red years of time.

After all, the company tried to fulfill its original goal: to create a video game that would give the company a foundation on which to build for many years to come. With that in place, somewhere close to what is expected to be 2011, CD Projekt Red announced the development of Cyberpunk 2077.

The Promise

Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to offer the same mechanics, open environment and interactive story as the Witcher series.

The game follows main character V through the future-oriented megalopolis of Night City, a city like any other obsessed with power. V, a mercenary, tries to sneak through this crime-ridden city to obtain an implant that would be the key to immortality.

Cyberpunk 2077 follows titles such as Cyberpunk 2013 and Cyberpunk 2020; games that were, in a sense, to predict everything in future societies. The series takes inspiration from movies like Blade Runner (1982) and other video games like Deus Ex (2000).

A few years after Cyberpunk 2077 was announced around 2011, pre-production for the game began a few years later after CD Projekt Red graduated from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2016.

Employment began with 50 people, whose cost is estimated at PLN 1.2 billion, or $ 313 million, making it one of the most expensive video games ever created, even after Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

In 2017, the Polish government even got involved in the project, giving the studio around $ 7 million to help the game with elements such as city-making and a cinematic atmosphere.

The game was now loaded with promise and money, and over the next few years, CD Projekt Red did the following:

  • He has collaborated with several different companies, including Digital Scapes, Qvidia, QLOC, and Jail Research, on real-time ray tracing, lip syncing, quality assurance, and language translation.

Years later, especially in 2018, Cyberpunk 2077 was focused on marketing and pre-release gameplay for influencers and game reviewers. The game for PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Stadia has been announced at E3 2019. At that time, the Collector’s Edition games were announced, giving players a variety of souvenirs for an additional fee, including comics, art books, wallpapers, and action figures.

Adopting this title was almost flawless. The game won over 100 awards at E3 2018, including Best Game and Best RPG.

The Hell

To start 2020, CD Projekt Red only had a few months to release its new project. The original release date was set for April 16, 2020 to coincide with other AAA releases such as The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which came out around the overall time of Cyberpunk’s anticipated release date.

However, in times of crisis, the coronavirus reached its peak in Europe (and around the world), causing long delays among developers in adding the finishing touches to the game. To add to that, CD Projekt Red announced a port for next-gen consoles due out in the second half of 2020, including the Playstation 5 and Xbox One Series X. And in the final weeks leading up to the game, a developer statement pointed to a delay in the game’s release, pushing the release date to September 17th. It didn’t stop there. The game was delayed on two other occasions; first by November 19, and finally by December 10. It’s been a 9-month fan wait from the game’s original release schedule.

After eager fans finally want to get their hands on a new title and the pressure that probably existed between investors and developer, the build-up on December 10 was huge. It was an explosion that the rushing CD Projekt Red felt, but he could have expected it too.

The game is finally released. A huge number of pre-orders have made their way into player libraries around the world, and in the first few hours after launch, it became obvious to critics and fans that this couldn’t be the final version of the game.

Simply put, the game was full of bugs, glitches, or for most PC and PS4 users, the game crashed completely. A few performance bugs in the game include:

  • Characters left in T poses, a marker set by the actors of the game so the animators know when to cut the sequence of events in a certain event or occasion.
  • Faceless characters.
  • Characters limping or moving through physical objects such as cars and walls.
  • Enemies shot in the game would either not die, or projectiles would not register to hit enemies.
  • The physics in the game did not add up. For example, when jumping out of a speeding car as a driver, the car comes to a complete stop, instead of holding its original speed before slowing down.
  • The huge game map is not rendered. Players sometimes fell through the map. If players explored different parts of the city, they were blocked.
  • Invisible enemies
  • The police do not react to crimes taking place before their eyes.

This is just a quick synopsis of some of the basic features that are missing in the game, and it didn’t take long for the community to respond.

Within hours of its launch, the game gained popularity on social media platforms such as Reddit. In the Cyberpunk community, on a site one of which has close to a million followers, the most popular posts of all time quickly filled up with performance issues and issues people were having with the game. Instead of a community to promote and get excited about the game, it has turned into a stream of complaints about the game and CD Projekt Red; PR nightmare for a game developer.

Critics did not have to wait long either. The New York Times called Cyberpunk 2077 “.. an obvious catastrophe in the history of the company.” The Guardian added, simply calling the release “saber.”

It was also an investment nightmare for CD Projekt Red. A few days after the premiere, CD Projekt SA shares reportedly dropped to 9.4%. Due to the transparency of marketers from the company prior to the game’s release, class actions were brought against them one week after the premiere for misleading investors.

The Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection launched an investigation into the company, hoping to receive information about problems in the game and actions that will be taken to solve them.

In just 8 days, both CD Projekt Red and the game’s reputation completely turned around. Filled with some of the highest expectations this year and one of the most expensive games of all time, it was quickly withdrawn from the Playstation store. Refunds have been issued to customers on platforms such as PC and Xbox. GameStop even accepted game returns even if the box was opened, which was usually against company policy.

The Future

The Cyberpunk team has since launched a dedicated section on their website. On this page, the developer has posted a FAQ and a video where they promise fans to fix the game and offer a series of patch updates for those who may still own the game.

While that may be the case, the team did not specify a fifth release date for the game, and the last release from the company came on January 29, confirming the company’s commitment to creating a high-quality game.

It’s depressing to think Cyberpunk 2077 would be in a few weeks if it hadn’t been delayed.

Cyberpunk 2077, originally scheduled for April 16, was recently postponed to September 17.

The extra time will give CD Projekt a chance to fine-tune what promises to be one of the best games of this generation.

And just as we began to come to terms with the decision to delay the game, CD Projekt unveiled a new graphic design that makes the waiting even more unbearable.

As the description suggests, different players will have a significantly changed experience depending on their approach to the game.
