The truth is that you can use both the Nvidia Control Panel and GeForce Experience to control and modify various graphics settings, as well as update drivers and other performance fixes. But is Nvidia GeForce Experience better than the Nvidia Control Panel?

For example, you can manage the 3D settings of the Nvidia GPU throughout the system, force a specific screen resolution, adjust the color desktop display, configure multiple displays, and more. If you’re using a laptop with an Nvidia GPU, you can use the Nvidia Control Panel to determine when to use the laptop’s on-board graphics and when to switch to the GPU, saving your laptop’s battery life.

While the Nvidia Control Panel focuses on Universal Settings, you can also create custom settings for individual programs. These GPU settings override the general settings of that particular program. You can force the game to use a specific type of anisotropic filtering, force vertical sync to turn on, or define a power management mode for your GPU.

Forcing these 3D settings in a game or program may have unintended consequences. You won’t damage your computer or GPU, but you can crash your games and programs without warning.

Nvidia GeForce Now compatible devices

There are currently two membership options for Nvidia GeForce Now, and the best news is that one of them is free. A third plan has recently been added and pre-orders are now open.

With free membership, you can play any compatible games for up to an hour. You may have to wait in line for a slot on one of the Nvidia machines to become available as paid members have priority.

Paid members, called Priority, get a longer session (up to 6 hours), priority access (hence the name), and games are played using the highest tier graphics, with RTX cards and ray tracing where applicable.

Priority Membership costs £ 8.99 / $ 8.99 / € 9.99 per month. You can also pay for 6 months upfront to save some cash – this way it costs £ 44.99 / $ 49.99 / € 49.99.

The new RTX 3080 tier is now available for pre-order. It will debut in November in North America, in December in Europe, and will offer 8 hours of playback in a single session, exclusive access to servers running on the amazingly impressive RTX 3080 graphics cards, ray tracing and gameplay up to 1440p at 120 frames per second. The RTX 3050 is manufactured using the same Samsung 8nm process as the rest of Nvidia’s Ampere lineup, and shares its GA106 production with both the mobile and discrete versions of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060.

However, our test card is just one of the many different styles that will be available when the RTX 3050 cards go on sale today.

Testing the GeForce RTX 3050: In the 1080p and 1440p Zone

PC Labs ran a series of synthetic and real-world DirectX 11 and 12 based benchmarks with the EVGA GeForce RTX 3050 XC Black Gaming 8G card. Our test bench, used for all cards in the tables below, is based on an Intel Core i9-10900K CPU and uses a PCI Express 3.0 motherboard, not a 4.0 (Asus ROG Maximus XII Hero Wi-Fi). It comes with 16GB of G.Skill DDR4 memory and a boot SSD. Considering our testing with the Core i9-10900K and recent Ryzen 9 processors, this platform is currently the best sane setup to take the CPU out of the frame rate equation.

During our testing, we focused on the RTX 3050 esports prowess in games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) and Rainbow Six Siege. We also tested the card for the rest of our standard benchmark, which tests the GPU’s ability to handle AAA games at the highest possible quality settings, as well as how it performs in synthetic tests that stress the card in different ways.

Almost every test we run (except esports titles) is performed with the highest possible image quality or settings. If you have a high refresh rate gaming monitor and you are concerned that your card may not be reaching the desired frame rate, this may still be possible with a combination of lower settings. Not only that, but some of these titles (including Death Stranding, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and F1 2020) are both DLSS and FidelityFX Super Resolution compatible. This can give you a performance boost of up to 40%, depending on your setting and the card you’re playing. And yes, let’s move on to our test results. Note: If you wish to narrow down the results below to a specific resolution (i.e the resolution of the monitor you intend to use), click the other two resolution dots in the graph legends below to omit them and display a single set of results. Our roster of AAA titles includes a mix of the latest games as well as some older but still reliable pillars of the benchmark toolkit, such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Far Cry 5.

GeForce RTX 3050 Test Results: Synthetic Benchmarks

Synthetic benchmarks can be good predictors of true game performance. In UL’s 3DMark, the Fire Strike Ultra from around 2013 is still a rough approximation of the load imposed by popular 4K games. To isolate the card’s performance, we only look at the sub-rating of the test graphics, not the overall score. Meanwhile, we’ve also launched 3DMark’s Time Spy Extreme program, which is a good test of how well the card is performing at DirectX 12 games at 4K resolution. 3DMark’s port Royal, until recently only running on GeForce RTX cards, measures how well the GPU is doing its ray tracing tasks (and therefore no stripes for most AMD Radeon cards). Also here are a couple of GPU acceleration tests (Furmark and LuxMark); more details about them can be found on our website how we test.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 is well below the “draft ox” GPU classification, and as such we haven’t seen many results here that will knock us to our knees.

However, the only test worth paying attention to was the Port Royal pass to 3DMark. Here we observed very high ray tracing performance compared to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, much more. If you want ray tracing at this price point (which we’re still not completely sold without DLSS or RSR, in truth) although the RTX 3050 has a $ 50 premium over the RX 6500 XT, its RT performance is close enough to AMD’s $ 329 quoted Radeon RX 6600 to guarantee a double rating.

At this price, it would be unbeatable even when looking at the aftermarket where the GTX 1660 Super is $ 470. However, given this unfortunate reality, the $ 3050 is likely to cost something closer to $ 500.

Ray tracing performance

We also tested the GeForce RTX 3050 on several titles that support cutting-edge real-time ray tracing effects. While the newer Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs now support ray tracing, older AMD models do not.

Nvidia has a key advantage in ray tracing games thanks to Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology, which uses AI tensor cores built into RTX GPUs to render games at a lower resolution internally and then upscale them to the desired resolution using machine learning in to fill the gaps. DLSS 2.0 works like black magic and gives Nvidia a strong advantage in ray tracing performance. Without it, it is usually impossible to run games that use ray tracing at resolutions above 1080p.

AMD offers its own FidelityFX Super Resolution to achieve the same core function but uses a different core technology, without relying on artificial intelligence or dedicated hardware. Both DLSS and FSR only work with games that support them, so our benchmarks below show performance only with ray tracing enabled but no DLSS or FSR. That wouldn’t be fair to AMD as all of these games support DLSS by itself. Enable these features on compatible games and you will see the frame rate increase. Testing without active upsampling also gives us insight into the raw ray tracing performance dips for these GPUs.

We plan on expanding our ray tracing game pack soon, but for now we’re giving Watch Dogs: Legion, Metro: Exodus, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider vortex to test the possibilities, with ray tracing options set to Ultra in each title. Legion features ray-traced reflections, Tomb Raider includes ray-traced shadows, and Metro offers more tiring (and mood-enhancing) ray-traced global lighting. Spoiler: Does not fit the $ 199 Radeon RX 6500 XT and its unusual technical setup.

Metro: Exodus uses ray tracing for global illumination. The Radeon RX 6500 XT refused to run in our test setup, hence a zero result. We are testing at maximum settings, but lowering the visual preset from “Extreme” to “Ultra” and enabling DLSS would greatly improve performance in this game from a practical point of view.

Watch Dogs: Legion hits your system whether or not you have ray tracing enabled, at least with a high definition texture pack installed. Activating ray tracing bounces exacerbates the problem. Ask for the Radeon RX 6500 XT.

Power draw, thermals, and noise

We test the power draw by looping the F1 2020 benchmark in 4K for about 20 minutes after we’ve compared everything else and noting the highest reading on our Watts Up Pro meter which measures the power consumption of our entire test system. The initial part of the race, where all the competing cars are on the screen simultaneously, seems to be the most challenging part.

This is not a worst case test; this is a GPU related game, running at GPU related resolution to judge performance when graphics card is sweating a lot. If you’re playing a game that also hits the CPU, you may notice a higher overall system power consumption. Be warned.

no complaints here. GeForce RTX 3050 just doesn’t need a lot of power to run. Nvidia’s Ampere architecture is not as efficient as AMD’s rival RDNA 2 design as a careful look at these results indicates, but it doesn’t matter that far in the GPU stack.

We test the thermals by leaving the GPU-Z open during the F1 2020 power consumption test, noting the highest maximum temperature at the end.

Again no complaints here. The EVGA XC Black cooler may be devoid of frills, but it certainly gets the job done and remains nice and quiet (though not entirely inaudible) while doing it.

Enabling ray tracing with the Medium Quality + DLSS setting lowered the average FPS to 60fps, which is still very fun, but personally I’d rather play the game with a higher quality setting and possibly leave DLSS on.

As VideoCardz has noted, Nvidia is pushing up the prices of its latest reference cards: the GeForce RTX 30 Founders Edition. In the UK, only the RTX 3070 Ti Founders Edition saw an increase from £ 529 to £ 549, but in the euro countries these graphics cards will earn buyers up to € 100 more than before. This is true for the RTX 3090 FE, which currently costs the widow € 1,649, while the rest of the range has gained a wallet weight of between € 20 and € 60.

I am a little concerned that we will see more of these price changes in the UK. While stocks are negligible, even by modern GPU standards, the Founders Edition models offer some of the best opportunities to actually buy a new graphics card at a retail price, either directly from Nvidia or from retail partners such as Scan. Knowing this, as well as being some of the best graphics cards on the market, will keep the barriers to entry disappointing.

That said, when it comes to gouging prices, the green team apparently has a lot to learn – what’s another £ 20 when other RTX 3070 Ti models are available on Amazon for £ 1,200 or more? Come on, Nvidia, you don’t even artificially double these prices. Honestly, an amateur hour. I guess there is also a possibility that these Founders Edition increases will be used to justify that other RTX 30 models are getting even more expensive, but no one should throw RRP on the graphics card multiple times in the beginning. Even if it’s really tasty.

Indeed, even if a whole bunch of Founders Edition cards received the same UK raises as they did in the EU, they are likely to still remain among the best GPU options available. Sometimes available, anyway.

Since the RTX 3050 comes with all hardware and software, just like Nvidia’s other siblings, only in a simplified form, this means it also supports Nvidia’s vast ecosystem of killer software features. Nvidia Broadcast, Nvidia Reflex for reducing latency, ShadowPlay, NVENC encoding, DLSS, Nvidia Image Scaling, it all works. Alleluia.

What Does It Need to Cost?

While we’re concerned that the GeForce RTX 3050 will be around $ 450 or more, and even there we’ve seen it overall better than the 6500 XT, what must the price be so no one can argue that the 6500 XT has any value? We think the amount is around $ 370, which is probably wishful thinking, but if Nvidia did it would be extremely embarrassing for AMD.

At $ 370, the RTX 3050 would be on par with the 6500 XT using PCIe in terms of cost per frame (1080p), while offering twice as much VRAM, twice as much PCIe bandwidth, better decoding support, encoding support, and more than two display outputs. So I don’t see it being that competitively priced, but anywhere between $ 370 and $ 450 will be tough on the 6500 XT.

What We Learned

How desirable the GeForce RTX 3050 will be will entirely depend on price and availability. If it ends up costing over $ 500, it’ll be a big, thick burger, and you might as well just buy the faster Radeon RX 6600.

That’s why it’s hard to say how excited you should be with the RTX 3050. Based on the performance we just saw, we know exactly where it should be priced to make sense, but it doesn’t make sense in the GPU the market isn’t.

We expected the Radeon 6500 XT to be around $ 300, which is still awful, even if it’s the cheapest “new” graphics card you can buy. So far, it’s done a bit better, hitting $ 270, at least for now, but it ultimately sucks at this price, and we don’t recommend anyone buying it. Instead, you should still keep or buy a used graphics card. Honestly, the $ 220 second-hand RX 570 4GB is a much better compromise and is the best option for those using a PCIe 3.0 system.

As for the new GeForce RTX 3050, we expect this part to be at least $ 450, but with the RTX 3060 selling at an average 112% premium over the suggested retail price, anything is possible. As mentioned earlier, we firmly believe that the RTX 3050 needs to be priced at around $ 370 to be a great deal in the current market and become an option for PC gamers.

At this price, it would be unbeatable even when looking at the aftermarket where the GTX 1660 Super is $ 470. However, given this unfortunate reality, the $ 3050 is likely to cost something closer to $ 500.

If that’s the case then your best bet is the RX 6600, or maybe a smarter option would be to look for a cheaper second hand to tie you down.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see where the RTX 3050 lands, and we’ll be sure to continue with the price update in the coming weeks. But in the meantime, if you have the chance to buy the RTX 3050 at MSRP or around $ 400, this is a good deal in our opinion.
