How to install an ARK Survival Dedicated Server on Linux

If you want to set up an Ark dedicated server for your gaming community, you must install the ARK dedicated server software on the remote server. The best operating system to run an Ark server is Linux.

This article will show you how to set up Ark: Survival Evolved on Linux using either a ServerMania dedicated server or a Cloud server.

Before You Begin

You have two options when creating an Ark server, you can set it up on your own computer, or you can pay a small monthly fee and host it online.

If you want to set up a reliable and affordable Ark game server online, ServerMania offers cheap cloud hosting starting at $ 5 per month. With a cloud server, you can set up Ark’s high-performance game servers on the best hardware, ensuring the lowest latency possible. Hosting an Ark server online will give you the best gaming experience as the server will be hosted on a blazingly fast network and will be online 24×7.

Go to ShooterGame> Binaries> Win64. We aim at the file named ShooterGameServer.exe, but it is not enough to click on it. He needs to know what game to load as well as server information and preferences.

Renting an ARK Server vs Hosting your Own

Hosting a server is fine for you and a few friends, but not a good idea if you want to develop a real community on your server.

Dedicated ARK Server on Your PC

ARK game logo

Hosting your own ARK server is a bit tricky to set up if you’ve never hosted a server before, but there are step-by-step guides on the official ARK wiki like this one. You can follow the instructions and your server will be up and running.

In addition to being a bit more difficult, running a server requires a fast CPU and a lot of RAM, especially when you’re hosting a large server.

Open world games tend to use more RAM and CPU power than games like TF2 or CS: GO. And more players will increase the server load on your computer.

The game is already quite hungry for performance without a server running. If you’re already struggling to keep frames per second at 60fps at 1080p, your performance will be degraded when using a large server.

Your friends will likely have a poor connection too if your computer fails to cope with the server.

Server uptime is another big reason why hosting may not be a great idea. The server will only be active when it is running on your computer.

If your friends only want to play while you’re on, that’s fine – but ARK is a game that takes a lot of grinding, and chances are your friends will want to jump in without you, and vice versa.

This means that the computer must be turned on the entire time the server is running.

And if you want to add some mods or DLC packs to your server, it’ll be hard to figure it out yourself.

Renting ARK Server Hosting

That’s where ARK server hosting comes in – dedicated hosting companies like GTX Gaming are experts in the field.

Renting from such a company will make your life easier – you’ll have better performance, 24/7 uptime, easy mod installation, and a dedicated support team to help you (among others).

Which is Best for You?

Don’t get me wrong, running a dedicated ARK server on your PC is doable, especially if you have a powerful gaming PC and only want to host a few friends. In that case, there’s no reason to pay for hosting.

But most people – especially those looking to host a real server – should find a good hosting company (like one of the options above).

ARK Server Hosting for PS4 & Xbox One

Nitrado is currently a leading game server hosting company that runs ARK servers for both Xbox One and PS4.

If you want to buy ARK server hosting for PS4, you can do so directly from the Nitrado website.

Renting an Xbox ARK server is a bit different. ARK is a game for Xbox One or Windows 10, so servers for it can only be ordered via the Nitrado app in the Microsoft Store.

As seen below, Nitrado offers tiered pricing for its PS4 and Xbox One ARK servers:

ark server hosting for PS4 and Xbox One

The more slots you buy, the cheaper the cost per slot will be.

There are a few other hosting companies that offer ARK on console servers, but Nitrado is basically the most reputable company in the ARK console server space.

.50 per slot, but their minimum number of slots is 30 players. This means their ARK servers start at $ 15 / month.

However, Host Havoc’s ARK servers also benefit from a multi-tier pricing system that greatly rewards buying a larger server.

When you buy a server with 100 players (their maximum number of slots), the price per slot drops to

ARK Mobile Server Hosting

If you want to host an ARK mobile server, Nitrado is the official mobile server provider. You can rent a mobile server from their website or open the Nitrado app from the ARK Mobile Server menu to rent your own server.

You don’t have to pay for ARK server hosting, but there aren’t any free ARK hosting companies. After all, ARK free hosting sounds more like charity than business and would probably suck.

If you want to host the free ARK server, you need to host it on your computer.

Hosting yourself isn’t a big deal for a small server with a few friends, but like Rust, ARK’s open world is better when it runs 24/7.

For the reasons we discussed at the beginning of this article, web hosting isn’t perfect, but it can be done.

If you want to learn how to make an ARK server, here is a video tutorial to show you what to do:

0.30 / slot.

Sure, you can add performance enhancements like extra CPU priority and extra RAM, but that’s optional and unnecessary for most. They also have a 72-hour money-back guarantee on all of their ARK servers, which is pretty good.

Host Havoc really shines with their support – they responded to my request within minutes. If you’re new to server hosting and want dedicated support staff to help you solve any inevitable problems, Host Havoc is for you.

0.87 per slot with a minimum number of slots of 15, which translates to a minimum monthly payment of up to $ 13.05.

However, please note that your location may have an impact on the price.

Citadel servers support 1000+ ARK mods with one click install and free DDoS protection.

Their performance is pretty good for the price, and I also had a nice experience with their support team.

All in all, Citadel Servers is a great choice for the best ARK server hosting company out there.

0.86 / slot) and a server with 250 slots costs $ 79.10 (

Things to Note About ARK Hosting Providers

ARK game logo

Here are some of the most important things to consider before purchasing an ARK server:

You Get What You Pay For

First of all, you get what you pay for.

Expect inferior performance from an ARK server host which costs significantly less than a higher quality (and more expensive.

Quality not only comes in the form of server performance, but also support response time, mod support, and more.

At the same time, do not overpay for the best host in the world, if you only want to run a simple server for yourself and a few friends.

Customer Support

Customer support is BIG because at one point or another you are sure to run into trouble with your server.

You should take a look at their knowledge base – a hosting company with a solid knowledge base is a great sign. Not only will this help you set up and troubleshoot your server, it usually means your business knows what it’s doing.

Response time is something else to consider that can usually be found in reviews. For example, a Havoc host will contact me within minutes of submitting my request.

GameServers, on the other hand, sucks. It takes several hours to answer.

No matter how tech savvy you are, it’s always a good idea to pay extra for excellent customer service.

Refund Policy

Some companies have a return policy which is great if you just want to dip your finger in the water. ARK server hosting isn’t for everyone, and you may realize that you’ve got it all behind you.

That’s why the refund policy is fantastic. PingPerfect offers a 24 hour return policy, as does GTX Gaming. Host Havoc has a 72-hour, no-questions-asked return policy.

Some companies even offer free trials.

Either way, a company that is confident enough with their servers to offer a money-back guarantee is well worth your time and money.

History

Looking at the history of a hosting company is a great way to gauge their quality.

See how long they have been offering ARK server hosting and how long they’ve been in business. Older businesses (hopefully) will have a good reputation and amazing customer service.

Conversely, a company that is new to ARK may not know the ins and outs of ARK server.

This brings us to the next point:

Reviews

The hosting company reviews are essential to read before buying and give you an idea of their reputation.

This one is obvious, so I won’t go into details here.

Server Locations

Lastly, make sure the hosting company has a server location close to you and your friends. The closer you are to the server, the better your performance will be.

Conversely, using a server on the mainland (or ocean) will result in high ping and poor performance, which nobody likes.

Fortunately, most hosting companies have server nodes all over the world, including the companies I have listed above.

0.31 per slot).

Wholesale discounts are great for server hosts who want a large server.

ARK is GTX Gaming’s best-selling server right now, so they know what they are doing.

Their ARK servers offer out-of-the-box setup and are Genesis-ready. You can order an ARK Genesis server that is ready immediately.

GTX Gaming is one of my favorite hosting companies (more on that in my GTX Gaming review) for many reasons.

They have an automatic mod updater, 24/7 support, free DDoS protection, all ARK maps and DLC, and a 24-hour return policy to name a few.

Oh, and their game switching feature allows you to switch the ARK server to any other game, whenever you want, for free.

GTX Gaming has great game support staff and an extensive knowledge base.

Unfortunately, they only support Steam PC ARK Servers – if you want a server for either Xbox One or PS4, you’ll need to refer to the Nitrado section below.

But if you’re looking for an ARK server for PC, GTX Gaming is my top pick.

Now, under Action, leave the Run program selected and navigate to the startserver.bat file you created earlier. You can find it in: Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ ARK \ ShooterGame \ Binaries \ Win64 \ startserver.bat

Free ARK Server Hosting

Using our control panel you can easily create your own ARK server for free.
Now creating your own ARK server is easier than ever.

great ARK hosting company, ordered an ark server for my clan and within 5 minutes it was up and running and was updated, ready to set up, the control panel is very easy to use and I never had any problems with the servers the support team is second to none and when I wanted have a custom map, they walked me through the whole process

I had no problems with any aspect of the server, setting everything up was simple and adding passwords and mods was very quick and easy. Thanks will be a customer again and recommend this ARK server hosting.

Overall the server is great. It was very simple to set up and run, it was very easy to load mods and modify almost anything to enjoy the game. Dedicated resources (RAM, CPU and disk space) are more than enough to run smoothly without any problems. It takes a while to load (around 10 minutes) if you load a lot of mods, but you can let go for days without restarting and not having any problems

The server works great and had no problems, the server manager is easy to understand and adjust settings as needed. Don’t let ScalaCubes just be aesthetically distracting as this is definitely a good affordable ARK hosting service with quality servers

The ARK server control panel is also where you assign player permissions as well as change the options used by the ARK server. Here you can also ban and unban players and the IP address.

You can also find all the useful passwords (for example, admin password) in the control panel.

You also have access to all files related to ARK server applications through a simple web-based file manager. This is useful if you want to make changes to server configuration and ini files such as GameUserSettings.ini.

Our ARK server hosting provides protection against DDoS attacks, keeping your server always available and playable. We provide a comprehensive help system to help you administer and run your own ARK server, and our customer service team is always ready to help you if you encounter any issues. The data needed to login to the ARK server control panel will be sent to you in our welcome e-mail, after paying for the ARK server.

How to Become an ARK Admin

It is very easy to become an ARK server administrator when using the ARK: Survival Evolved game client. First, go to the game server’s control panel. Look for the administrator account section and click the show password button. Remember or write it down. Go back to the ARK game client and login to your ARK server, then press the tab. After doing this, run the following command in the ARK client: EnableCheats ADMINPASSWORD (replace ADMINPASSWORD with the one you downloaded from the server control panel).

How to Setup an ARK Server Cluster

Configuration of an ARK server cluster is easy and is done from the ARK server control panel. First, locate your server and then go to the cluster page. Then click the Add to cluster button. You can only add a new server if you have a dedicated IP address for it. Enter the host name and click Save. This will generate a new server cluster and you can manage it using the cluster control panel.

Ark: Survival Evolved is a multiplayer survival game focusing on action and combat. To create your own server you need to purchase ARK server hosting. It was developed by Studio Wildcard in collaboration with Instinct Games, Efecto Studios and Virtual Basement. It was released as an early access title in 2015 and then had a full release in late summer 2017.

Many people compare ARK to the more graphically satisfying version of Minecraft. The gameplay is about gathering food, gathering materials, constructing shelters and building weapons. All of this can be done in cooperation with another player or as part of a general state of conflict.

ARK starts with the player getting stuck on an island called ARK. Naked, cold, and without food, the player must try to survive. You have to use your hunter’s skills and cleverness to gather resources, tame and ride creatures, or just kill, skin and eat the more dangerous ones. Agriculture is a big thing at ARK and you will have to test your farming and crafting skills to survive in this harsh environment.

Sure, you can add performance enhancements like extra CPU priority and extra RAM, but that’s optional and unnecessary for most. They also have a 72-hour money-back guarantee on all of their ARK servers, which is pretty good.

Hosting a local ARK Server

Once you’ve made these important decisions, getting started with an ARK server is relatively easy, especially if you only host locally on a LAN. Locally speaking, I mean the same computer that you are playing on. LAN means it will only be available on your home network. This is ideal if you have friends, roommates are gamers, or just want to play on your own.

Windows and Windows Server

The first step is to open Steam, right-click on ARK: Survival Evolved, and click Properties. Then click Local Files> Browse Local Files.

Go to ShooterGame> Binaries> Win64. We aim at the file named ShooterGameServer.exe, but it is not enough to click on it. He needs to know what game to load as well as server information and preferences.

Consequently, you’ll want to create a new batch file. A batch file is a plain text file that consists of a series of commands executed by the command line interpreter. In our case, this command will start the server with a set of options. Right-click anywhere in Windows Explorer in the folder where ShooterGameServer.exe is located, then click New> Text Document. You will now see a file called New Text Document.txt. Double-click on it to open a new notepad window and paste the following:

start ShooterGameServer.exe “MapName? SessionName = MySuperAwesomeArkServer? ServerPassword = thisisopcjonalny? ServerAdminPassword = megassecretadminpass? Port = 27015? QueryPort = 27016? listen”
exit.

Do you see these question marks? All part of ShooterGameServer.exe are server parameters and you will need to adjust them before continuing, so let’s share the meaning of each parameter.

  • MapName: The name of the ARK map on which to base the server. For example, “TheIsland”, “TheCenter”, and “Ragnarok”.
  • SessionName = MySuperAwesomeArkServer: This is just your server name. You can change it to anything you like, but it’s best to avoid symbols and spaces.
  • ServerPassword = thisis optional: This is the password users must enter to access the server. If you trust everyone on the net, you can just delete that part, next to the question mark in front of it.
  • ServerAdminPassword = megassecretadminpass: This is the server administrator password. You should probably change it to something safer.

Now click on File> Save As. You should see your Win64 directory. Change Save as type: to All Files. Type startserver.bat in the Filename field and click Save.

Finally, double-click on the new file and wait for it to start!

Linux

If you are using Linux, you will have to change the syntax a bit. We’re going to be using the shell instead of the stock, which comes with a few minor changes. Open your favorite text editor (I use nano for simple things) and paste:

Save this file to the Linux server’s file folder (usually something like / home / ark / server / ShooterGame / Binaries / Linux) and name it startserver.sh. If you’re wondering what’s up with all those question marks, these are the server configuration options – see the Windows section above for an explanation of each option. Before you try to start the server with a script, you have to make sure that you can actually start it. You do this by opening a terminal in the same location where we just created the file. Now enter:

$ chmod + x startserver.sh

This command makes the file executable as Linux is picky about which files it allows to run for security reasons. Now you can start the server at any time by opening a terminal window from a folder and typing:

Installing an internet-connected server

You have a few options if you want to play against users over the internet, but they’re all fairly simple. Either way, you’ll have to download between 2 and 10 GB, so be prepared. We’re going to go straight to the most user-friendly method which is the Steam client.

Installing via the Steam UI

If you host locally, there’s a good chance you already have both ARK and Steam installed, so this method shouldn’t be unfamiliar. It’s worth noting, however, that other methods give you more control over things like scheduled updates and restarts. However, it should be enough to play with friends.

To get started, open Steam and go to Utilities in the Library drop-down menu.

Scroll until you find an entry that says ARK: Survival Evolved Dedicated Server. Right-click on it and hit Install Game.

For me, the download was only 2 GB. Then you can proceed to installation at: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ ARK Survival Evolved Dedicated Server.

From this point on, the configuration is very similar to that of a local server. Create a new text file and copy and paste the following:

start ShooterGameServer.exe “TheIsland? SessionName = ArkServer? ServerPassword = testpassword? ServerAdminPassword = adminpassword Port = 27015? QueryPort = 27016? listen”
exit

If you are using Linux, you will have to change the syntax a bit. We will be using the shell instead of the batch which comes with a few minor changes:

Customize the passwords, server name, and map to your preference, then click File> Save As. On Windows, make sure to change Save as type: to All Files, and then name it startserver.bat. Click Save.

On Linux, save it as startserver.sh. There is no need to change any options. However, you need to make the script executable. You can do this by right-clicking and then pressing Properties. On the Permissions tab, check Allow the file to run as a program.

You can then execute the script by going to its folder, opening a terminal window, and typing:

Windows users can simply double-click the .bat file to start their server, but you will still need to configure your firewall and router to work properly.

SteamCMD

As mentioned before, Steam CMD is recommended for advanced users, but it’s also useful for those who don’t host locally. If you have the server on a different computer, it means you don’t need to install the Steam client for it to work.

For Windows users, before doing anything, you should create a new folder called SteamCMD. Then you can download SteamCMD.

Create a new text file in the same folder. Paste the following into it:

@echo disabled
start “” steamcmd.exe + login USER PASS + force_install_dir “C: \ YOURSTEAMCMDFOLDER” + app_update 346110 confirm + exit

Click File> Save As, change Save as type: to All Files, name it SteamCMD.bat, and click Save. You should now have something like this:

Right-click SteamCMD.bat and select Run as administrator. A command window will open and the download of updates will begin.

While downloading, open your notebook and paste the following:

start ShooterGameServer.exe “MapName? SessionName = ArkServer? ServerPassword = testpassword? ServerAdminPassword = adminpassword? MultiHome = YourLocalIP? Port = 27015? QueryPort = 27016? listen”
exit

Unfortunately, it’s not available on Linux, but ARK Server Tools is a very good alternative. It’s a little more complicated to use and install, but has the same features and is much easier than doing things manually.

How to Make an ARK Server

There are a few steps to hosting your own ARK server. You need to install the Steam server software, work with it to start the ARK server, and then configure it to be discoverable.

SteamCMD

SteamCMD stands for Steam Console Client. It allows you to create and update ARK server installations.

  1. Open the drive where you want to install SteamCMD.
  2. Right-click on an empty spot, point to “New” and click “Folder.”
  3. Enter “SteamCMD” as the folder name.
  4. Download SteamCMD.
  5. Extract the ZIP file to the newly created SteamCMD folder.
  6. Double-click the executable “steamcmd” to run the file.

Download CMD from Steam

ARK Dedicated Server Installation

Once SteamCMD is installed on your PC, you can easily download the ARK: Survival Evolved Dedicated Server files.

  1. Open the drive where you want to store ARK files. You’ll need at least 15 GB of space, but you should have more if possible for future updates and saves.
  2. Right-click on an empty spot, point to “New” and click “Folder.”
  3. Enter “ARK Server” as the folder name.
  4. Open the executable “steamcmd” from the SteamCMD folder.
  5. Enter “anonymous login” and press Enter.
  6. Enter “app_update 376030 validate” and press Enter.

Installation of the ARK dedicated server

Now the data needed to run your own ARK dedicated server is available on your computer.

Setting Up the Server

In this example, we will set up a server for Ragnarok. You’ll want to replace the word Ragnarok with the name of the map you’re using if you prefer a different map.

  1. Open the ARK Survival dedicated server folder.
  2. Open the “shooter.”
  3. Open “Binaries.”
  4. Open “Win64.”

ARK Survival Evolved dedicated server text file

  • You can change Ragnarok to a different map name if you want to use a different map.
  • You can freely adjust the number of players.
  • You can rename the session by replacing the text “ServerName” with your input.
  • You can change the difficulty level and shift as you need. The above are what they use on their official servers.
  • AltSaveDirectoryName can be changed to whatever you want. This is the server save folder. I prefer to name them on the map as above.
  • Change “MyPassword” and “AdminPassword” to the passwords you prefer to use. If you don’t want to set them, you can remove “ServerPassword = MyPassword?” i ServerAdminPassword = AdminPassword? ” recommended.
  • Enter -NoBattlEye if you prefer to avoid BattlEye problems. Sometimes the program may work fine, but some server owners have found problems with it.
  • You can remove “-NoTransferFromFiltering” and the cluster ID information if you are not planning on clustering multiple servers. If so, create your unique cluster identifier instead of the sample one.
  • The activeevent entry applies when you want to attach an event on the server. It’s worth having there, even if you don’t plan to activate the event right now. When it says “none”, it means that neither is active. Change “missing” to the name of the event if there is one if you want to organize it.
  • The noundermeshkilling entry disables player killing, but still allows teleportation. You can attach or remove it as needed.
  • The crossplay entry allows people playing Epic Games to join your server. Delete it if you don’t want the cross game.

    Additional Information

There are a few other things you need to know to run a dedicated ARK server.

    Closing the Server

When you are not using the server, simply close the server window to prevent access to it. You and others will regain access when you reopen the server by double-clicking the .bat file again.

To be safe, use the in-game administrator command “saveworld” to make sure everything is backed up before shutting down the server. Be sure to enter “enablecheats AdminPassword” to enable administrator commands before saving.

    Opening the Server IP

If you cannot find your server by searching the server name on unofficial in-game servers, you will need to change the in-game settings.

    1. Open ARK: Survival.
    2. Click “Host / Local” and select your map, then select “Play Single Player.”
    3. Press “Tab” to open the console after loading the game.
    4. Enter “Open ServerIP” where ServerIP is replaced with your server’s IP address. You should use your public IPv4.

Other players should join by finding it on the unofficial server list after it shows up. Make sure they add it to their favorites.

    Map Names

The official names of the maps that you should use when configuring the server are:

Make sure to use the correct names when setting up the .bat file.

    Updating Your Server

Every time ARK updates you need to update your server otherwise players will not be able to join. Keep an eye on your Steam downloads to see when the ARK will update.

    1. Open SteamCMD.
    2. Enter “anonymous login” and press Enter.
    3. Enter “app_update 376030 validation”.

    Server update

Once you have an ARK server, people should be able to join you and your friend, as long as you have opened the required ports and the server is attractive on the list. You can configure your server to change many different world settings, add mods, or control which dinosaurs spawn.

Running your own dedicated ARK server gives you much more control than playing someone else’s.

Plus, follow our detailed guide to any ARK crash issues.
