They Finally Did It: Fallout 76 Is Pretty Good Now
Last April, I purchased a PC copy of Fallout 76 for $ 17. It was such a low price, I finally couldn’t resist trying it. After about five hours of doing a few tasks and building a little hut that I called home, I moved on. While I enjoyed exploring the world, the performance issues, the lack of NPCs and a host of other issues made it difficult to enjoy 76 like a real Fallout game.
A lot has changed in Fallout 76 since then.
Earlier this year, Bethesda released a major update that added NPCs. These new characters act like NPCs in other Fallouts. You can talk to them, trade, make friends and even kill. Some were part of new and different factions, bringing new questlines and areas to explore. Others are just random invaders or explorers. All these new people have added more life to the Fallout 76 wasteland.
It wasn’t until last month that Fallout 76 received the One Wasteland update that balanced the entire game. Before that, while exploring world 76, you might have encountered extremely high-level enemies who were able to kill you with a few blows. Now, with a major update, the world scales with you, making it easier for new players to explore. It also made it easier for high-level players to collaborate with low-level friends as the game scales enemies differently for each player.

After hearing about the One Wasteland update, I decided to give Fallout 76 one more shot. Since the last time I played, I had my computer modernized so it worked better. But then, when I left my little cabin and tried to remember what the hell I was doing over a year ago, I ran into a random NPC. He was looking for some supplies in the world. I can talk to him. I also tried to shoot him to see if I could kill him. After looting his corpse, I remembered to turn on the radio and found that it was now being run by a real human DJ. She is gorgeous and made Fallout 76 feel more like New Vegas or Fallout 3 right away.
Then I turned off all my active tasks – there were a lot of them because the previous Zack apparently didn’t do much – and did my favorite thing in every major Bethesda RPG: I chose a direction and started walking. And for the next hour I was distracted by NPC camps, bunkers and out of the way houses, and random creatures none of which shot me like a miniature god. While all this was going on, a funny DJ joked about songs and giant ants. And then I realized Fallout 76 is now, with all its updates and more stable gameplay, nothing more than a great new Fallout game that I have never played.
So now I can’t escape the mermaids in Fallout 76. Whenever I find some free time, log in and complete a few quests, explore the world, repair my home (which is now a bigger, nicer-looking hut), or participate in in-game public events.
Every now and then I come across other players while playing my new Fallout RPG. But that’s not a problem, and I actually like bumping into people. Not once in the 30+ hours I’ve played have I been attacked or trolled by anyone. People will wave, dance and even lead me to a nearby camp where I have often found free supplies and water. Fallout 76’s multiplayer feels more optional than I expected, and I’ve played many times for hours without encountering a different camp or player. I know some of the harder, later activities require teamwork and other players, but for now I’m glad to discover and plunder (mostly) as a lone wolf.
When I reinstalled Fallout 76, I didn’t expect to play it for more than a few hours, and now it may be the game I play the most this month. I’m glad I gave the game another chance. It’s easy to write off games that the internet seems to have found horrible or unworthy of your time, especially when you’ve given these games a chance before.
But these days, games can evolve and improve over months and years. A game you played a year or two ago may not look the same today. The way the games are constantly updated and improved has made some parts of my job difficult, but it has also allowed bad or average games to become good or even great with enough time. Fallout 76 seems to be going in the right direction, and I’m excited to see future updates improve and expand on what’s already there.
This game is liked by the community for being a great RPG with a lot of exploration. But one question from the community is, “Is Fallout 76 cross-platform?” So without further ado, let’s find out.
What is Fallout 76 about?
As already said, Fallout 76 is a continuation of previous Fallout games. The action of the game takes place in an alternative story, set in 2102, twenty-five years after the outbreak of nuclear war in the world. The player takes on the role of an inhabitant of Vault 76, a Fallout refuge in West Virginia, home to some of America’s greatest and greatest talents. The players strive to recolonize the wasteland that has suffered from a nuclear attack. On the day of reclamation, they leave their crypts and continue their tasks and individual journeys.
The game only offers multiplayer mode, allowing players to play in groups of 20 or less online. Fallout 76 servers are public dedicated servers. Players are automatically assigned to one of them. Developers also announced the intention to launch private servers after some time. These private servers will allow players to invite selected players, thus preventing unwanted strangers from entering the system.
Fallout 76 also includes some aspects and elements of previous Fallout games. However, the developers have significantly modified them, trying to give Fallout 76 a unique and original look. The VATS system introduced in Fallout 3 is visible in Fallout 76. It allows players to pause the game for a while and target specific locations and attack enemies with focus. The same feature was used in Fallout 76 as a real-time system.
the game environment is four times the size of Fallout 4. So that players do not get lost in the huge environment, the game has a map that every player has access to. The location of the game is called Appalachia. It represents West Virginia. The surroundings are filled with lively valleys, mountains and hilly terrain that have been beautifully and realistically captured.
Developers recreated real-world locations such as the state capital of West Virginia, Woodburn Circle, Greenbrier, New River Gorge Bridge, and Camden Park. In addition, the monsters presented here are magnificent and gigantic, many of which were inspired by West Virginia folklore.
Developers revised the special progression system known from the previous Fallout series. The character of the players is divided into seven sections: agility, intelligence, charisma, perception, strength, endurance and luck. All these attributes are visible on the screen. As the game level increases for each player, they can use the kill points they earn to increase their traits on a scale of one to fifteen. Depending on their performance and points, they can choose perks or skills that increase their performance. Completing special missions also grants them gameplay bonuses.
The game also offers trading cards. Each card has a value, and a player can receive perks or abilities equal to the card’s value. For example, if your card value is five, you can get any perk worth five points. The game also allows players to combine multiple cards and gain abilities with more points. Players must research the situation they find themselves in and then choose a perk to help them survive.
Features of Fallout 76
The action of the game takes place twenty-five years after the world suffered from the catastrophic nuclear war in West Virginia. People had no hope of surviving the catastrophe. However, players can now find shelter in the crypts and help rebuild society for humans. Vault 76 is now a place of residence and it is time to fight the monsters and help the world become a better place for humanity. Are you ready to start this Fallout adventure?
Take a look at the features of Fallout 76 below and get a better understanding of the game.
The game offers players nuclear weapons. Players receive individual starter codes upon reaching a certain level. Once acquired, players can access the rockets. They can launch missiles into almost any part of the open world. However, in order to access missiles, the game requires you to complete a certain game level.
The game is connected with multiplayer servers, thanks to which players can play in a group of 20 players. Players can also play in teams. This increases the fun and thrill of the game. Players can interact with other colleagues via voice chat.
Player versus Player mode is another interesting addition to the game. Now you can challenge other players in an engaging match. However, this option is not available until you have completed level 5.
The game garnered mixed reviews from critics and gamers. Many complained about technical issues, the overall design, the lack of gameplay elements, and the lack of unplayable human characters. However, the developers solved these problems and made the necessary changes to the game through several updates. Now the game meets the expectations of players and is fun to play.

Is Fallout 76 Cross-Platform between PC and Xbox?
There is no cross-platform play between PC and Xbox. After Microsoft finalized its acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, Bethesda’s parent company, some gamers were hoping there would be at least a cross-platform play between PC and Xbox in the near future.
But while Fallout 76 is part of Xbox Game Pass for both Xbox and PC as of July 2020, it doesn’t support crossplay.
Is there Crossplay between Steam, Bethesda and Xbox Game Pass for PC?
Yes, if you have the PC version of Fallout 76, you can play along with your friends who also have the PC version – whether they use Bethesda.net, Steam, or the Xbox Game Pass for PC. This was confirmed by Bethesda in the official help section:
Can players who log into Bethesda.net, Steam, and Microsoft Game Pass for PC in Fallout 76 play together?
Yes. As long as you play Fallout 76 on PC, you’ll be able to play against other PC players in all game modes, whether they choose to play through Steam, Bethesda.net, or Microsoft Game Pass for PC.

Fallout 76 recommended system requirements
If you plan on cranking up your graphics fidelity and playing Fallout 76 as intended, you’ll need to beef up your graphics card, although there’s not much CPU space between low-end and high-end setups.
Fallout 76 Recommended Specs:
- Processor: Intel Core i7-4790 3.6 GHz / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5 GHz
- Memory: 8 GB
- Operating system: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit operating system required)
- Graphics: Nvidia GTX 970 4GB / AMD R9 290X 4GB
- Memory: 60 GB of free hard disk space
The Intel Haswell i7 4790 processor has four cores clocked at 3.6 GHz and accelerates to 4 GHz. With hyper-threading enabled for a total of eight threads, this layout should be more than able to keep up with your graphics card. 16 GB of system memory will also be available.
If you want to run Fallout 76 with high graphics settings and still maintain an acceptable frame rate, you’ll need an Nvidia GTX 1060 3GB or RX 570 4GB card. These cards should not break into pieces when bombs are falling.
Computer too slow? Here’s how to optimise your PC for Fallout 76
If your gaming PC doesn’t meet the Fallout 76 system requirements, all is not lost. Before you go out and buy a new graphics card, you can try turning off some of the most demanding settings in the game while trying to hit a stable 30fps.
Shadows are one of the most demanding settings in the game that your computer has to deal with. While it may seem like a black spot can be easy on your GPU, turning shadows off completely can save precious frames.
Reflections is another of the worst performance errors. While the bounces really make the game more likely, creating dynamic bounces across the Fallout 76 world won’t be an easy task for your GPU. Turning off reflections should noticeably improve Fallout 76’s performance.
Most games support more than one type of anti-aliasing – the process of removing jagged lines – and some of these AA techniques are much more demanding than others. The least demanding setting is simply disabling AA entirely, but if that’s too scary to look at, FXAA is a fairly inexpensive option that should improve Fallout 76’s performance.

Are you and your computer ready to survive in the harsh environment of a post-apocalyptic, nuclear Virginia? Fallout 76 seeks to bring a similarity to the classic Fallout style game to live and breathing online multiplayer gameplay. Imagine a game that combines the elements of Minecraft, Elder Scrolls Online, DayZ, and then brings them all together in a Vault Dweller universe. Players will be able to gain experience, level up and customize their characters as usual, but now you can also team up with up to three friends. Don’t you feel like having fun with others? This is possible too, and you can even mute other players around you if you fancy exploring the highly irradiated landscape yourself. Be careful though, dangerous creatures and other players can hit you at any time.
Fallout 76 is built using the same engine that Bethesda used to create other popular titles such as Fallout 4 and Skyrim. However, since the map is roughly four times the size of Fallout 4, and with many other players sharing a server with you, the system requirements for Fallout 76 are noticeably higher than for the other titles mentioned earlier. This is especially true when we look at the minimum CPU models needed to play Fallout 76. Bethesda recently announced that you need an Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD Ryzen 3 1300X for FO76, which are significantly more powerful than their FO4 (Core) i5-2300 / Phenom II X4 945). For Intel, it’s not just the leap from i5 to i7.
In addition to the high CPU requirements, the minimum requirements for a Fallout 76 graphics card are nothing to fuss. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 and AMD Radeon R9 285 are the lowest cards on the GPU totem that will lower it. The GTX 780 can easily run over 90% of the games found in other users’ libraries and is in fact the recommended GPU for playing QUBE 2. If your computer meets or slightly exceeds certain minimum requirements, you will most likely need to reduce some settings such as shadows and reflections . While these effects can really bring your game to life and help you fully immerse yourself in the world, being able to play the game at a decent frame rate is arguably more important to most people. If the game still feels unstable, you can also try turning off anti-aliasing bywhich is a method of smoothing out jagged lines. This can be very taxing on your GPU, so turning it off completely is the best option for people who don’t have supercomputers.
When the bombs start falling and all hell seems to break loose, you’ll want to make sure your PC can keep up with the action while playing with High Mode graphics. This confidence comes from having a PC that exceeds the recommended system requirements and is nothing to mock about. You’ll need a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290X along with a Core i7-4790 or Ryzen 5 1500X, not to mention the 8 GB of system memory that is needed. With this setup, you should be ready to go hunting for outlaws with graphics cranked up all the way as you embark on your Fallout 76 adventure.
Cross-platform play has become increasingly popular in recent years, but so far Fallout 76 is not one of those games. This means you’ll only have to play the game on your own console if you’re using Xbox or PlayStation, and only on your PC if you’re using Windows.
Is Fallout 76 Cross-Platform Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S?
Yes! Fallout 76 between Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S. If you have Fallout 76 on Xbox One and your friend has a copy of the game on Xbox Series X / S, you’ll be able to play together.
