Update DirectX

- After the Run application starts, type dxdiag in the Open area and click OK or press Enter.

What is DirectX: It’s an API
Like Vulkan and OpenGL, DirectX is an API that allows you to run video games on your computer. However, unlike its counterparts, DX is a Microsoft proprietary platform and only runs on Windows. On the other hand, OpenGL and Vulkan work on both Mac and Linux.
What does a graphical API like DirectX do? It acts as an intermediary between the game engine and the graphics drivers, which in turn interact with the operating system kernel. The graphical API is the platform on which the actual design and mechanics of the game are determined. Think of it as MS Paint, where the game is painting and the painting application is API. However, unlike paint, a graphical API’s output program can only be read by the API used to design it. Generally, an API is intended for a specific operating system. This is the reason why PS4 games don’t work on Xbox One and vice versa.
DirectX 12 Ultimate is the first graphical API to break this rule. It will be used on both Windows and the next-gen Xbox Series X. With DX12 Ultimate, MS basically integrates both platforms.
DirectX 11 vs DirectX 12: What Does it Mean for PC Gamers
There are three main advantages of the DirectX 12 API for PC gamers:
Better Scaling with Multi-Core CPUs
One of the main benefits of low-level APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan is better CPU utilization. Traditionally in DirectX 9 and 11 based games, most games only used 2-4 cores for different mechanics: physics, artificial intelligence, random connections etc. Some games were even limited to one. This has changed with DirectX 12. The load is more evenly distributed across all cores, making multi-core processors more suitable for gamers.
Maximum hardware utilization
Many of you may have noticed that in the beginning, AMD GPUs favored DirectX 12 titles more than competing NVIDIA parts. Why?
The reason is better use. Traditionally, NVIDIA has had much better driver support while AMD hardware has always suffered from lacking it. DirectX 12 adds a number of usage-enhancing technologies, such as asynchronous computation, which allows multiple stages of a pipeline to be executed simultaneously (read: Compute and Graphics). This makes poor driver handling a less pressing issue.
Closer to Metal Support
Another major benefit of DirectX 12 is that developers have more control over how their game uses the hardware. Previously, this was more abstract, and mostly drivers and APIs dealt with them (although some engines like Frostbyte and Unreal provided low-level tools as well).
Now the task falls to the developers. They have closer access to metal, meaning most rendering and resource allocation responsibilities are handled by game engines with some help from graphics drivers.
This is a double-edged sword as there are many GPU architectures in the wild and it is not possible for independent developers to optimize their game for all of them. Fortunately, third-party engines like Unreal, CryEngine, and Unity do it for them, and they only have to focus on design.

Why doesn’t the AMD RX 5000 fully support DirectX 12 Ultimate?
The relationship between AMD and Microsoft seems to be much closer than that of NVIDIA, after all, the main Xbox Series X and Series S processors use AMD integrated GPUs with RDNA 2 architecture. The shaders were listed a few years ago under the name “Primitive Shaders” during AMD Vega’s pre-promotional campaign, a feature that ultimately wasn’t integrated into this generation of AMD graphics cards. HBCC, a memory controller that allowed access to NAND Flash memory, was integrated and is therefore a precursor to DirectStorage.
As part of this story, you’d expect support for DirectX 12 Ultimate on AMD graphics cards to arrive sooner than NVIDIA. However, DirectX 12 Ultimate in its complete package also includes support for Ray Tracing and Variable Rate Shading, features not found in the first generation RDNA. While the primitive shaders are conceptually the same as the Mesh Shader, they differ enough in implementation that AMD made the necessary changes.
And it is true that AMD has a different policy than NVIDIA, where it first implements proprietary technology, waiting for Microsoft to implement it in its API, with a policy of evangelization through the support of some developers. In the case of AMD, the goal of GPUs is to follow DirectX 12 as it is at the moment. Therefore, the RDNA series or known as AMD Radeon RX 5000 does not fully support DirectX 12 Ultimate.
Only AMD RX 6000 fully support DirectX 12 Ultimate
Currently, the only AMD graphics cards with full DirectX 12 Ultimate support are the AMD Radeon RX 6000, due to the use of their RDNA 2 architecture. The problem is that they hit the market at the same time as the mining bubble and the component shortage. So its availability is sparse, but if you’re lucky enough to get it, you’ll have a powerful GPU ready for the future.
At the moment and as we wrote earlier, AMD’s previous generation GPUs are not prepared for future games. And this is not why these cards are of poor quality, now the difference is not so big, because there are almost no games using new technologies. But as time passes and they are gradually adapted as minimum hardware requirements, they become more expensive.
So at the time of writing this article, AMD graphics cards compatible with DirectX 12 Ultimate are the RX 6000 series, for both desktops and laptops, and of course the ones AMD will release later.
