God of War walkthrough, guide and tips for the Norse mythology adventure

God of War is coming to PC, and just like the original PS4 release, we’ve got a complete God of War guide to help you along the way.

Start here if you want to learn every important aspect of the game, whether it’s a step-by-step solution or a solution to a specific problem.

The story of God of War takes place in different regions. We have broken them down below, respectively, in chronological order as you encounter them while playing the main plot of the game.

You can also find the main hub of our God of War guide on this page, with links to all of our individual pages for specific parts of the game, as well as a collection of God of War tips to help you get started.

8 things we’d like to know before playing God of War

God of War walkthrough for PC and PS4

God of War is actually quite weirdly constructed. There are moments that are purely linear, areas that open up to give you a nice choice of where to go next, and many, many places that you will have to return to a second time much later in the game as you have new abilities and powers.

As a result, our walkthrough here is exactly like this: walkthrough to the main story, in order if you just go from one goal to another without branching out. We’ll make note of anything you can pick up along the way – a hidden chest, a collectible, or a temple, say – but we won’t take you down long and winding dead-ends. You can explore them on a whim, or alternatively we will be back to cover all optional areas after completing the main narrative guide.

In other words, for a story-specific walkthrough that covers all the main things you’ll find on your way from start to finish, this is where you can start:

Last missions

God of War: Chains of Olympus is the fourth installment of the series released on March 4, 2008 on PS2. Chronologically, this is the second installment after God of War: Ascension, which was released a few years after this game.

How many God of War games are there in the series?

God of War game

Including the soon-to-be-released Ragnarok, there are a total of 15 games in the God of War series. Of these games, only six are considered part of the main series: Numbered Entries, Ascension, New GoW, and Ragnarok.

That being said, it can be argued that these two portable games have earned their living in the universe. Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta were intended for PlayStation Portable. They offer a small amount of context for the events of the GoW universe. However, they are not required for a real experience.

There is one spin-off game for the series. Betrayal is a mobile game in the GoW universe.

Otherwise, three combination packages were released. The GoW Collection includes the first and second games in the series and was available on PS3 and PS Vita. The Origins Collection includes two PlayStation Portable parts, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. Finally, the Saga includes all three original GoW games, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. It was also available on PlayStation 3.

There is one remaster that is not part of the collection: III Remastered for PS4.

Finally, there are two promotional games designed for the Norse mythology chapter of God of War. A Call from the Wilds is a short, text-based adventure game that has been officially created and sponsored by the creators, and is therefore recognized. Mimir’s vision is an augmented reality game and is therefore more or less ignored by most.

Which God of War game should I play first?

God of War

The following sections assume that you are playing the main series. While the side series is great (especially Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta), the console versions are easier to get.

You have two main options to introduce you to this mythology-laden adventure: God of War (2005) or God of War (2018).

The original game is aging a bit and is still only available on PS3. These are quite serious obstacles to enjoying the original title… But the game is so fun that it might be worth investing in personally.

The new Nordic-inspired game is also a good place to start. While you’re missing a bit of character development, Kratos is essentially a completely new person to a new environment. You will not suffer too much from starting a new continuity.

Overall, God of War (2018) is arguably the less painful game to start with, just because it’s easier to get into modern consoles.

Finally, we have the latest entry in the series – God of War, often referred to as God of War (2018) to distinguish it from the original game from 2005.
