Is there a God of War Ragnarok release date yet?

God of War Ragnarok will be released in 2022. While we still don’t know the exact date, as Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 will arrive early next year, PlayStation players will have plenty to do in the meantime.

As you might have expected, Ragnarok will remain an exclusive PlayStation product and therefore will only be available on PlayStation 4 and 5.

However, with Sony eventually deciding to release 2018 on PC, we may see another chapter of this ancient tale on PC in the future.

For a full year, the only information fans have had about the sequel to God of War (2018) has been a blue circle covered in Norse runes. While it was nice to know that God of War Ragnarok is real and in development, many PlayStation owners have been dreaming of something more specific.

When is the God of War Ragnarok release date?

The release date of God of War Ragnarok will be in 2022, but developers from Sony Santa Monica Studio have yet to confirm the exact date, or even a month.

Rumors on Twitter suggest September 30, 2022 could be the release date of God of War Ragnarok, but we’ll be sure to let you know if that date – or any other – is confirmed by an official source.

Is God of War Ragnarok on PS4 or PS5?

Sony’s Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, revealed in a blog post that God of War: Ragnarok will be coming to both PS4 and PS5. This might come as a surprise considering that many thought it would be a PS5 exclusivity.

Hulst said: “Where it makes sense to create a title for both PS4 and PS5 – for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 – we’ll be looking at it. And if PS4 owners want to play the game, then they can. If they want to continue playing the PS5 version, this game will be for them.”

God of War Ragnarok release date

Grace Orlady, Senior Santa Monica Studio Manager, has outlined some key details on what to expect from the game after its launch in a PlayStation Blog post.

“As you can see in the trailer, we’re getting up a few years after the events of God of War (2018). The freezing winds of Fimbulwinter reached Midgard, making the survival of Kratos, Atreus and Mimir in the Nordic wilderness even more difficult than before.”

They added: “While the last game built a tremendous amount of trust and understanding between father and son, their interactions are still very complex – especially after discovering the Giant Atreus legacy and a hidden prophecy that only Kratos has seen.”

The trailer for God Of War: Ragnarok also revealed two of the game’s main antagonists. The first was Freya, who had been an ally of Kratos in the previous game.

“We wanted to remind players that not only is Freya a terrifyingly powerful user of Vanir magic, but also that she is a formidable fighter herself. Enraged that Kratos is evading justice at her fingertips, Freya will direct any weapon in her possession against her son’s killer.”

Finally, Thor was also revealed as an enemy to face “Hailed dismissively by Mimir as” The Greatest Bastard Butcher in the Nine Spheres “, Thor earned the title of one of the most powerful Aces gods by obliterating nearly all the Giants in Odin’s Command.”

This time the story will take place in the full Nine Kingdoms – meaning this time we will also see Vanaheim, Svartalfheim and Asgard. These three were omitted in the last game.

Is God of War Ragnarok coming to PS4?

God of War Ragnarok will likely be a cross-platform game coming to both PS4 and PS5. The name of the game was clearly checked by Herman Hulst in an interview where it was noted that many games (previously considered PlayStation 5 exclusive) will also be coming to PS4.

“Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 – for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 – we’ll be keeping an eye on it,” said Hulst.

“And if PS4 owners want to play the game, they can. If they want to continue playing the PS5 version, this game will be for them.”

It is very likely that both games will be released at the same time; Sony has yet to release its own PS4 / PS5 game, which did not have a simultaneous release date on both platforms.

Both Kratos and his son, Atreus, will return, and the gameplay feels similar to their 2018 tour. Although both characters use different new skills, powers and weapons.

What will the gameplay of God of War: Ragnarok be like?

Footage from the Sony Showcase 2021 confirmed that gamers can expect a more crushing combat bone, offset by exploration in the semi-open world that Cory Barlog, director of 2018’s God of War, once described as “broadly linear,” following VentureBeat.

The action sequences in the trailer are interspersed with much calmer moments of Kratos and Atreus exploring an intriguing fantasy world. At first, you can see the steam sheltering from the cave’s cold winter landscape, but their journey soon takes them to brighter, warmer places.

However, as the trailer focuses on the upcoming combat events in God of War: Ragnarok, the next iteration of the long series of action looks ready to be delivered. Kratos uses a chain weapon that resembles the Blades of Chaos, and also wields an ax, while Atreus appears to be summoning a spirit animal.

All of this indicates that fans can probably look forward to playing God of War: Ragnarok, which uses many of the mechanics developed for its immediate predecessor, although fans will have to wait for more information from Santa Monica Studios to confirm this.

The game’s developers, Santa Monica Studios, wrote a storyline that spans a chain of events that reveal how the Norse gods died and how it happened after Aesir and Baldur’s death fell upon Kratos’ ax.

Combat

god of War 2018 has been praised for its mechanics and combat systems, and Ragnarok seems to continue that spirit and tradition.

“As a team, we’ve worked hard to learn from God of War (2018) and improve the combat to make it feel fresh but familiar. In the case of God of War Ragnarok, one of our main goals was to increase player choice in combat. Whether it’s heavy punch combinations, element mastery or clever defensive tactics – you’ll find plenty of opportunities to fight alongside our duo in a way that’s extremely expressive, ”Sony said.

Kratos faces a new enemy

Kratos faces a new enemy

The enemies in Ragnarok will be “sharper” and more diverse, and Kratos and Atreus will be ready to take on “tons of new creatures” from all over Norse mythology. Some of the new enemies revealed so far are Stalker and Dreki.

“Thanks to the increased number of enemies, we aim to make every combat encounter unforgettable, from the smallest fights to big bosses that stand out!” Sony said.

To Asgard

While 2018’s God of War allowed players to visit six of the nine spheres, Ragnarok goes further and takes you to all nine. This includes Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and Asgard, which were not in the first game. New areas from previous locations have also been added to Ragnarok. “Discovering kingdoms will take you anywhere, from green, otherworldly jungles to intricate underground mining networks,” said Sony. “The next installment in the series will bring you more varied, beautiful and mysterious places than any other God of War game.”

While we don’t know much about Ragnarok’s history or Sony Santa Monica’s plans after launch, we do know that this will be Kratos’ last foray into the world of Norse mythology. So says Cory Barlog, director of God of War 2018. Barlog said in an interview that Sony Santa Monica chose to limit the story to two games so that it doesn’t become too bulky. There are elements to Kratos’ relationship with Atreus that can be explored in the second game, but stretching things too much from there would weaken the story the studio wants to tell.

“Complexity radiates like wrinkles in a pond. We could make it an ocean and make these ripples travel thousands of miles. But is it necessary and is it beneficial, or do we feel like you know what, it’s just too far apart? ” Barlog said. “The rows are falling too far apart and you lose the story a bit.”

So don’t expect the third game where Kratos will take down various Norse gods. This does not mean that this is the end of his journey or the last time we will follow the adventures of Kratos and Boy, but it does suggest a serious last resort at the end of Ragnarok.

The trailer for God Of War: Ragnarok also revealed two of the game’s main antagonists. The first was Freya, who had been an ally of Kratos in the previous game.
