What Heavy and Tractor-trailer Truck Drivers Do About this section
Truck and tractor unit drivers move goods from one place to another. Most truck tractor drivers are long-distance drivers and operate trucks with a combined weight in excess of 26,000 pounds for vehicle, passenger and cargo. These drivers deliver goods on intercity routes that sometimes span several states.
Duties
Truck and tractor unit drivers typically do the following:
- Drive long distances
- Report any incidents on the road to the dispatcher
- Obey all applicable traffic regulations
- Secure the load for transport with ropes, blocks, chains or guards
- Check their trailers before and after the trip and note down any faults found
- Keep a log of working hours by following all federal and state laws
- Report serious mechanical problems to appropriate people
- Keep their trucks and related equipment clean and in good working order
Most truck and tractor unit driver routes are determined by the dispatcher, but some independent drivers still plan their own routes. When planning routes, drivers must take into account any road restrictions that prohibit large trucks. Drivers must also schedule rest periods required by law during their journey.
Some drivers have one or two routes that they use regularly, and other drivers use many different routes across the country. In addition, some drivers have routes that span Mexico or Canada.
Companies sometimes use two drivers, called teams, on long journeys to minimize downtime. During these team runs, one driver sleeps in a bunk behind the cabin while the other drives.
Some loads require drivers to comply with additional safety regulations. Some truck drivers who are transporting hazardous materials, such as chemical waste, need to take special precautions when driving and may carry specialist safety equipment in the event of an accident. Other drivers, such as those carrying liquids, oversized loads or cars, must obey the rules that apply to them.
Some long distance truck drivers, also known as owner-operators, buy or lease trucks and start the business themselves. In addition to running tasks, owner-operators have business tasks, including finding and retaining customers and performing administrative work.
Work Environment About this section
Truck and tractor unit drivers had around 2.0 million jobs in 2020. The largest employers of truck and tractor unit drivers are:
Truck transport | 43% |
Wholesale trade | 12 |
Self-employed persons | 7 |
Production | 7 |
Construction | 6 |
Working as a long haul truck driver is a lifestyle choice as these drivers may be away from home for days or weeks. They spend most of this time alone. Driving a truck can also be physically demanding. Driving for many hours in a row can be tiring and some drivers have to load and unload.
Injuries and Illnesses
Due to the risk of road accidents, truck and tractor drivers have one of the highest injury and illness rates in all occupations.
Although fatalities are rare, truck and tractor unit drivers experience one of the highest fatal accident rates at work in all occupations.
Work Schedules
Most heavy truck tractor drivers work full time. The Federal Motor Transport Safety Administration regulates the hours a long-distance truck driver may work. Drivers may not work longer than 14 hours without a break, including up to 11 hours of driving by car and the remaining time of performing other work, e.g unloading the load. Drivers must have at least 10 hours off work between working periods. Drivers are also limited to driving no more than 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days; then drivers must take 34 hours off before the next 7- or 8-day race starts. Drivers must record their hours in a logbook. Truck drivers often work at night, on weekends and on public holidays.
Second, you might be wondering how to dance if you’re new to the game. To do this, open the emoji wheel (D-Pad on the console or press B on the PC) and then select the emote that will make your character dance. After a successful dance, a popup will appear on your screen so you’ll know when it works!

How to complete the “Use Keep it Mello at a trucker’s oasis, ice cream parlor, and a frozen lake” Fortnite Showtime challenge
Complete this to get a sweet Marshmello-style pickaxe.
Two new Showtime Challenges unexpectedly hit Fortnite: Battle Royale this morning after only one Quest was released yesterday.
The third and final Showtime Challenge involves “using Keep it Mello in a trucker’s oasis, ice cream parlor, and a frozen lake.” However, in order to complete this challenge, you need to complete the second Showtime quest, in which you just need to visit the Showtime site.

After completing the second task, you will unlock the Keep it Mello emoticon, which is a dance move that you must equip and use in the third challenge.
Here’s where you need to go to complete Showtime’s third and final Challenge.
Frozen lake

Once you start playing the ice cream shop, you can leave the desert biome and head to the frozen tundra on the other side of the map. If you don’t know yet where the frozen lake is, it is north of Polar Peak and southeast of the Viking Village.

After dancing in all three locations, you’ll unlock this awesome Marshmello-style pickaxe.
Notice that the map above is color coded. The red circle with a black outline is where the Marshmello concert takes place. The yellow circles are places where you need to use a gentle dance. I also recommend doing this in LTM Team Rumble.
Search a Showtime Poster
Posters promoting the upcoming event have appeared on the Fortnite map, and your task is to find and interact with one poster. That’s right, just one. There are several locations and we have five to choose from, including one in Pleasant Park on a downtown Ramada.
Use Keep It Mello at a trucker’s oasis, ice cream parlor, and a frozen lake
Now that you’ve unlocked the Keep It Mello emote for completing the second challenge, equip that emote with the main emotes wheel and head to these three locations. There, use the emote to complete each part of the challenge! It doesn’t matter in what order you do them.
The truck driver’s oasis is located at the gas station in the southern part of the desert biome. One of the two shops is actually called Truck N ‘Oasis, so dance there!
The Ice Cream Parlor is its own unique store west of the racetrack in the desert biome. Be sure to go inside or stand on the roof while dancing.
You guessed it, the frozen lake is a frozen lake north of Polar Peak. Dance anywhere on the ice! Rest in the peas, Greasy Grove.
