The different types of app versions

Until recently, Mac developers only had to worry about developing Intel-based applications. However, that began to change as Apple’s first silicon Macs came out. In order for Intel-based applications to run on these computers, Apple introduced the Rosetta 2.

Developers now have three choices when it comes to creating Mac applications. They can continue to produce only Intel-based applications, change and build “Universal 2” versions, or offer only Apple silicon versions. The former means that Apple silicon users will have to use Rosetta emulator software to convert Intel-based titles. At the same time, the middle option creates software versions based on Intel and Apple silicon. On Apple silicone Mac computers, ARM versions will run automatically. The last option, creating only Apple silicone-based applications, is not feasible as there are more Intel-based Mac users – and developers wouldn’t want to exclude those users.

2020 27-inch iMac: the first with a 1080p webcam

2019 Mac Pro: Bigger is better

Thanks to the design of the very Jona Ive, this Mac Pro, or carefully referred to as Apple’s cheese grater, was introduced at WWDC19 along with the Pro Display XDR.

The best part about this processor is its configurability and expandability to most of its specs. As Apple says, “It is a system designed to enable a wide range of professionals to push the boundaries of what is possible.”

Mac Pro can have up to 28 cores, 2933MHz DDR4 ECC memory, 140GB / s memory bandwidth and a six-channel memory system. It has also been recently updated with new graphics card modules, including the Radeon Pro W6800X MPX module, the Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX module, and the Radeon Pro W6900X MPX module.

CISC vs. RISC

What do the numbers and letters at the end of Intel processors mean?

This is where things get a bit confusing, and that’s where Intel’s naming convention hides just how powerful the laptop is.

When finding out what type of processor your computer has, refer to the full specs to see the exact processor model. This has a big impact on how powerful your computer will be.

For example, a computer labeled as having a “Core i5” processor may have any number of different specifications.

Taking the example of the Core i5, your computer may have any of the following, as well as many others: Core i5-7400, Core i5 7600K, Core i5 7300U, Core i5-7500HQ, Core i5-7400T, and Core i5 7Y57. The trend also applies to the i3 and i7 chips.

Note the different four-digit number and final letter (or Y in one case). This is the last letter (suffix) that gives you the most information about the type of processor you’re looking at.

  • Suffix U: “Ultra” low power. These chips generally have two cores (although newer models now have four cores) and are among the slowest Core i-branded processors. These chips are often found in cheaper AIO computers and in many laptops. They may be suitable for photo and video editing, but are much slower when performing tasks such as exporting files to disk. If you’re looking for a photo editing machine, go for the Core i5 or even try stretching to the i7.
  • HQ Suffix: Typically found in powerful laptops and usually equipped with four cores. Perfect for video and photo editing, but cuts battery life and portability.
  • Center Y: Y are the lowest power tokens you can find. They are not suitable for photo or video editing, but will be suitable for lighter tasks. Generational numbers

There is one more complication when choosing a processor. The first digit after the dash indicates which generation your CPU comes from. The higher the number, the newer it is. From 2018, the latest generation is the 8th gen.
