Bluetooth is used by many devices such as headphones and keyboards. Many computers have this as well, but if yours doesn’t, you can add it with a Bluetooth dongle / dongle. Fortunately, setup is fairly straightforward.

This guide applies to computers with Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7.

Find a Bluetooth Adapter

Purchasing a Bluetooth PC adapter is the easiest way to add this feature to your desktop or laptop computer. You don’t have to worry about opening the computer case, installing a bluetooth card or something like that.

Bluetooth dongles use USB, so you can plug them outside your computer through an open USB port. They’re inexpensive, compact, and easy to find from places like Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, etc.

Overall, you want to get the fastest Bluetooth transmitter that your computer supports. For most modern computers, this means a USB 3.0 adapter. However, if you look at your computer’s USB ports and they have black plastic inserts, they’re probably USB 2.0. If they are blue or labeled SS (for SuperSpeed) then USB 3.0. This matters because although USB 3.0 devices run on USB 2.0 ports, they won’t run as fast as when plugged into USB 3.0 ports.

You can use Bluetooth headphones or microphone on Windows 10, or you may want to transfer files from your mobile to Windows 10 via Bluetooth, then find the Bluetooth driver for Windows 10 is missing. But the problem is that you can’t find it anymore Bluetooth in the Settings window.

How to Tell if a Windows Computer has Bluetooth

If you are using Windows, it is very easy to see if your PC has Bluetooth or not. This will work on both a desktop and laptop.

The exception is if you rebuilt Windows yourself and haven’t used Bluetooth since setup. You may not have installed all of the drivers, so they may not necessarily show up in Device Manager. If you bought a computer, check the website or the manufacturer’s manual. If you built it, check the specifications of the equipment you purchased.

How to Tell if a Mac Computer has Bluetooth

Most Macs have one or another Bluetooth feature, so even if you bought a used one or received it as a gift, you can usually count on Bluetooth. If you want to be sure, please do this:

If you’re using a Linux laptop or PC and want to know if it has Bluetooth, you can check it with a simple command. This will work on both a desktop and laptop.

  1. Open a terminal and type ‘dmesg | grep -i blue ‘and press Enter. You can also enter ‘lsusb | grep Bluetooth ”to check if you have Bluetooth.
  2. If you see a return of hardware, you have Bluetooth. If you don’t see the hardware listing, you don’t see it.

If you are using Linux, remember that some Linux kernels are not compatible with all Bluetooth modules, so they will not recognize them. While the above query works on most newer hardware and major distributions, if you compiled your own or are using something exotic, it may not return the correct result. I tested it on Ubuntu and Zorin and it worked fine. However, your mileage may vary.

You need to obtain a Bluetooth dongle that you connect to a USB port on your computer and enable it to communicate with other devices via Bluetooth.

What to Look For in a Bluetooth Adapter

There are many factors that make it worth buying a USB Bluetooth adapter. For starters, you need a dongle or a plug-and-play card. You wish it could run on any computer – whether it’s a Windows 7 computer or the latest.

It is also important to have good drivers. Buy adapters from reputable companies with good customer service.

You may also see different version numbers when shopping. Bluetooth has undergone several updates. You would like to purchase a hardware key version 4.0 or higher. Bluetooth 1.0 to 3.0 tends to use more power.

How to Check Bluetooth Devices on Windows 10

Go to Windows Settings> Devices> Bluetooth & Other Devices. Here you’ll find the option to turn Bluetooth on or off. It will also display all devices paired with the computer.

Clicking on a device will bring up the option to remove the device from the list. Note that unpaired devices can be paired again at a later time.

How to add Bluetooth to your computer

The vast majority of modern computers and laptops have built-in Bluetooth, but what about an older device that doesn’t support it? This can be extremely frustrating, especially if you want to plug in something like a pair of wireless headphones.

Fortunately, there’s a workaround that allows you to add Bluetooth connectivity to your device.

How to add Bluetooth to your computer

Fortunately, adding Bluetooth functionality to your computer is simple and fun. This will require spending money, but will not break the bank.

You need to obtain a Bluetooth dongle that you connect to a USB port on your computer and enable it to communicate with other devices via Bluetooth.

If you find that you don’t have enough free USB ports, we recommend that you purchase a USB hub as a quick fix.

You’ll find several high-quality Bluetooth dongles on Amazon, and we recommend the ASUS version as its reputation for high-quality hardware is long established.

Once you’ve got the dongle, you can plug it directly into your computer’s USB port and it will start its own installation process. The dongle will include installation instructions and some software, but make sure you manually search for updated drivers before you start using it

How to update your Bluetooth Dongle’s drivers

Press the Start button in the lower left corner and search for “Device Manager”, open it and find the USB key. You will find it in the “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” section, which is usually at the bottom as below.

Update the Bluetooth drivers

Find your Bluetooth dongle in the list, right-click it and select “Update Driver Software…” and wait for Windows to update the drivers.

Once installed, you will be able to follow the instructions that come with your specific dongle and connect to your devices easily and pleasantly.

Open a terminal and type ‘dmesg | grep -i blue ‘and press Enter. You can also enter ‘lsusb | grep Bluetooth ‘to tell if you have Bluetooth. If you see a return of hardware, you have Bluetooth. If you don’t see the hardware listing, you don’t see it.

Why Would I Want To Do This?

While you can do without Bluetooth support on your computer (especially if you’re using a desktop computer), there are tens of thousands of peripherals and accessories that require – or would be more convenient with – Bluetooth.

For example, you could run an auxiliary audio cable from your computer to any bluetooth speaker we checked in our guide to bluetooth speakers, but this would make the speaker much more portable and convenient for streaming music via bluetooth so you can keep it portable in anywhere in the office. Bluetooth is also useful when using wireless headsets, Bluetooth trackers, game controllers, mice, keyboards, and other peripherals.

See If Your Computer Already Has Bluetooth

Before we proceed, we encourage you to double-check your computer for Bluetooth radio. If you have an older laptop or computer, you’re probably right in assuming you don’t have built-in Bluetooth. However, if you have a newer laptop, it’s practically obvious you have Bluetooth. Likewise, this was formerly a feature that did not exist in desktops, but in the past few years, a surprising number of desktops have come to be sold with a Bluetooth radio.

Checking for Bluetooth in Windows is simple. You can check Bluetooth by going to Control Panel> Network and Internet> Network Connections. If the Bluetooth radio is properly installed and configured, you’ll see a “Bluetooth Network Connection” entry alongside other network connections such as Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

Alternatively, you can open Device Manager – just hit Start and search for “device manager” – then look for the “Bluetooth” entry. Device Manager will show you if your computer has a Bluetooth device, even if it’s not properly configured.

We also suggest that you double-check the stats on your computer to be sure. While this is unlikely, it is possible that the hardware vendor that supports your hardware is using a special driver or other utility that you need to download to enable the Bluetooth connection. A bit of messing around with google revealing if you have hardware in the first place and if you need a special driver, BIOS, or other updates.

Bluetooth dongles use USB, so you can plug them outside your computer through an open USB port. They’re inexpensive, compact, and easy to find from places like Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, etc.
