15 Best Tips Before Buying a Domain Name
Having a good domain name is essential as it can increase your website’s credibility, increase brand awareness, and ensure that users can find you online. Therefore, it is important to take the time to research before choosing a suitable domain name for your website.
Here are 15 tips to review before deciding on a domain name:
- Study your niche. Knowing the most popular keywords and search terms in your niche will help you find a domain name that fits your project.
- Aim for a short and memorable domain. A catchy and short name is easier to spell and type than a long one. It will also increase the chances of your visitors remembering your site name. Therefore, try to create a name between six and 14 characters long.
- If possible, choose .com. The .com domain extension is the most popular top-level domain these days, so consider starting with this suffix as most internet users will easily recognize it.
- Check for trademark infringement. To avoid legal hassle, try not to report a domain name that is similar to popular, well-established brands. Use the registered trademark search tool to avoid such situations.
- Avoid numbers and hyphens. URLs with numbers and dashes are more difficult to remember and type. It is also challenging to convey the name verbally with spaces or numbers. Instead, stick to a domain that consists of a single word or set of words.
- Look for close alternatives. If you already have a domain name in mind, consider purchasing the often misspelled variations to ensure all potential traffic reaches you. A great example is amzon.com which takes visitors to Amazon’s main page, or fb.com which leads directly to Facebook.
- Research social media platforms. Once you know your domain name, search for it on popular social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. Reserve a page for your project to prevent other people from taking your name.
- Think ahead. Domains are an investment for years. Therefore, basing your name on a tagline that is overrated at the moment may not be the best approach in the long run. So think about where your business or brand might be located five or ten years from now before deciding to apply for a domain name.
- Avoid double letters. Try not to use double letters in the domain as this may increase the likelihood of people misspelling the name, resulting in lost traffic.
- Use a domain name generator. Find more ideas with the domain name generator. Just type a word or phrase to describe your project and you’ll get a list of suggestions. Also use other tools such as Thesaurus to avoid using a word whose meaning you may have misinterpreted.
- Choose a premium domain. Premium domains are high-value names that can become popular web addresses that offer great branding opportunities. Consider purchasing a premium domain to get high search engine rankings and get organic traffic quickly.
- Check the history of the domain. Make sure the domain was not associated with a fraudulent site by using a tool like the Wayback Machine. It will help you find information about the domain’s origin and see who the previous owners were.
- Consider using local TLDs. Using ccTLD can help your site get more traffic through location.
- Choose a new domain extension. Consider using a new gTLD such as .xyz, which is also used by Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google. It is one of the most popular new extensions that suits almost any design, from online stores to event sites. This suffix is also more affordable than TLD .com.
- Discuss your ideas. If picking the right name for your website seems like a daunting task, consider sharing your ideas with friends, family, or colleagues. They can give you the advice you are looking for.

After placing your order and entering your domain EPP code, the transfer process will begin and you will receive a domain transfer email which you will need to confirm.
The domain registration will also be renewed for one year after the transfer, except for ccTLD domains such as .es, .co.uk or .com.br.
Please note that your site may be unavailable during DNS changes, which may take up to 24 hours to fully propagate.
Keep in mind that purchasing a domain name is one of the most important steps in setting up a blog, personal website, or online business. Without it, users would not be able to easily access your website on the Internet.
How to Get a Domain for Free
If you already have hosting services, you won’t be able to use this method unless you are ready to upgrade to a better plan or switch to a new host. Hence, timing is an important factor if you want to get a domain name for free for next year.
But if you’re starting your site from scratch, you’ll need web hosting services in addition to your domain name.
That’s why it’s worth combining them. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to get everything you need in one trade while saving some money.
The most important consideration is choosing the right host for your website. So let’s talk about how to do this.
Web Hosts That Offer Free Domains
Launching a new website can be an expensive endeavor, so we want to help you save as much money as possible.
Many hosting providers offer free domain names and affordable beginner hosting services to help you get set up and up and running as quickly as possible. Our top recommendations in this regard include:

Hostinger
Most Affordable Option
If you’re on a really tight budget, you can get four years of web hosting services and a free domain name for just $ 66.72. That adds up to $ 400.39 per month, making it the cheapest hosting and domain name package on our list.
If you’re looking for affordable hosting that doesn’t feel cheap, Hostinger is your best bet. To qualify for a free domain you need to sign up for a (at least) 1-year Premium plan which starts at 3,500.59 per month for a four-year contract.
With this plan, you’ll pay $ 124.32 for four years of hosting, and get your domain name free for the first year.
Signing up for two years in advance brings the monthly price to $ 3.99 per month, which is $ 95.76 for two years. If you prefer an even shorter commitment, Hostinger’s annual contract is $ 5.99 per month, which is $ 71.88 for the first year.
Regardless of the domain name term you choose, and all Hostinger domain name features are available free for the first year.
A monthly option is also available, but does not include the free domain.
Hostinger’s premium plan comes with more than enough resources for new websites or anyone migrating their existing website from another hosting provider.

- 100 free email accounts

Wix is a comprehensive website builder that is a great starting point for blogs, ecommerce stores, business websites, portfolios, and more. The drag-and-drop interface is accessible to beginners with over 900 professionally designed templates without sacrificing design freedom.
For example, if you sign up for Hostinger Premium or Business shared hosting plans, you’ll get a free domain for one year with a value corresponding to the .com TLD.
Domain Names Allow Us to Distinguish Sites
The number of websites around the world exceeds a billion, and this number is growing every second. Domain names allow people to tell one site from another without having to use a long, unique string of numbers known as a Internet Protocol (IP) address. Domain names are made up of a domain extension (ie “.com”), a second level domain (your website name), and a host name (www). Together, these details form a unified resource locator (URL).
After you’ve done your best to brainstorm your business name, you’re ready to buy. Purchasing a domain name as a hosting package is a wise choice as you’ll need both anyway. Typically, this can give you a discount or completely save you on the cost of purchasing a domain name.
But wait, what if my domain name is taken?
You have options. You can come up with a new name, slightly modify the domain name with a suffix, or try an extension other than .com. You can also use Whois to contact the current domain owner and get their asking price. If the domain is privately registered, you can also use an intermediary to negotiate on your behalf. It all depends on how badly you want that name. At least it doesn’t hurt to reach out. By the look of the page, you will be able to tell if the purchase will be expensive or not. There is no market rate for buying a domain name from someone. It could cost you $ 10, and if sold on Insurance.com in 2010, it could cost you $ 35.6 million!
Now that you are done buying a domain name that you are happy with, you need to register it. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) lists 2,943 domain registrars, but there’s no reason making simple things so hard. Register your domain with one of the well-known providers such as Yahoo Small Business, and you’re done! Well, sort of. It will take several days for the site to be updated in the Domain Name System (DNS).
This is a poultice. Hopefully, we asked ourselves the persistent question that brought you here: “How do I buy a domain name for my business?” relax.

Bluehost also offers VPS hosting, managed hosting, WordPress hosting, and dedicated hosting if you need more than your shared hosting plan provides.
Build Your Business By Registering Your Domain
After weighing the pros and cons of free or paid domains, you should start your search for the perfect domain name. Domain names can disappear quickly – and the competition is a little tougher than with Symbolics in 1985 – so it’s important to register the one you want before it’s too late.
Registering a domain name is quick and easy, but it takes some time to brainstorm the right name, choose the optimal suffix, and find the right domain registrar. Consequently, there is no better time than now to start your domain name registration.
Editor’s Note: This post was originally posted in February 2020 and has been updated for comprehensiveness.
Once you’ve found a suitable domain registrar, you’ll need to search for your domain name using the registrar search bar. There are millions of domain names, and thousands of them are added every day.
But, what if you want to change hosting companies?
I used to use a hosting company that offered free domain names, but only as long as you were their customer.
This is completely unethical. Your domain name should be your property. If you don’t have full control over it, you are asking for trouble in the later stages.
Luckily, Bluehost is a bit different. Here’s what their terms and conditions say about domain ownership when you register a free domain with them:
“If you are dissatisfied with your Bluehost experience, you won’t lose your domain name. You will be able to move it or simply direct it to another place, in a convenient place for you. You keep ownership of the domain until the end of the registration period, unless you choose to renew it.”
If you want to register a free domain name with Bluehost, you can do so here.
The process is really simple and only takes around 60 seconds. If you want to know how to install a WordPress site on Bluehost, we have prepared a step-by-step guide here.
What other ways can I get a free domain name?
The method described above is the only way I know of to register a domain name for free without any compromise.
Next, we’ll look at some of the other methods and explain why you should avoid them.
Free ccTLD domains – There are several services that offer free domain names, as long as you are using a specific TLD (top level domains). TLD is the bit at the end of the domain name. TLD Venture Harbor is a .com domain.
Avoid these services as they usually offer obscure ccTLDs (country code top level domains) such as .tk (Tokelau) or .cf (Central African Republic). Not only do they look unprofessional, they make ranking on Google much more difficult.
Monetizing your domain as an affiliate – Some domain registrars allow you to monetize your domain name by referring other clients. While there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s probably more confusing than worth it.
Using a free subdomain – Many free website builders and services such as WordPress.com will provide you with a free subdomain like “yourpage.wordpress.com’.
There are several reasons why I recommend avoiding this. Most of all, it means that you don’t own your domain name, WordPress (or whoever you’re building your site with.
Second, it looked unprofessional and harder to remember.
Third, you are limited to using a website development platform that provides a subdomain. Often times, free website builders are very limited, so growing your website audience is a huge challenge.
Paying for a domain name with ads – Some domain hosting and registration companies offer a free domain name in exchange for allowing them to put up banner ads on your site. Not only is Google skeptical of it, but what if your site generated a million pageviews and you didn’t receive a dime? If you are going to have ads, you should be in control of them.
If you’re looking for an all-in-one package, Wix is your best bet. It includes hosting, an intuitive drag-and-drop website builder, e-commerce feature, over 800 free starter templates, and a free domain name for the first year starting at $ 14 / month.
Frequently asked questions about free email domains
We’ve just covered a few different ways to get a free email domain. Now we will answer any questions you may have.
Can I pick the exact domain with a free email domain?
With many free email domains, you cannot choose the exact domain. You must use the brand address or select from a list provided by the company. However, if you get a free email domain through your hosting provider, you’ll usually be in full control of your domain name.
Is a free email domain worth it?
A free email domain can be worth it if it mirrors your website’s domain name. If you have to select random email ending, it does little to distinguish your email address from “gmail.com” or the like. Therefore, we recommend that you check that your hosting provider allows you to fully customize your domain and retain your company’s branding.
Conclusion
Communicating with your customers using your personal email address does not increase your credibility. However, you probably want to avoid the extra expense of professional email domains. Unfortunately, free ones are hard to come by, but you do have a couple of options.
All in all, here are the four methods to get a free email domain we covered in this post:
-
: best option if you want a completely free email domain and don’t mind using a generic email address. : Free or affordable plans for those who already have a domain name. : Perfect if you need hosting and a custom email domain. : Suitable for users who want reliable web hosting with a custom email domain.
If you want to pay a small monthly fee, you can also use Gmail with your own custom domain name via Google Workspace (formerly G Suite). For more information, check out our full Google Workspace email tutorial.
