How to use PS4 controller on PC – 3 simple steps

Have you ever thought about using a PS4 controller on your Windows PC? You may be thinking that your controller was designed specifically for the Sony PlayStation 4 console, so it may not work on a Windows PC.

But the truth is, you can! And the setup process is very easy. You don’t need any advanced computer skills to achieve this. Just follow the three simple steps outlined below and you’ll be able to use your PS4 controller to play Windows games.

Step 1: Connect your PS4 Controller via USB or Bluetooth

To use the PS4 controller on your computer, the first step you need to take is to physically connect it to your computer. There are two ways to connect the controller to the computer.

Method 1: Connect your PS4 Controller via USB

The easiest way to connect the controller to a Windows computer is to use a micro-USB cable. There are benefits to doing this. Once connected to the controller and computer, you don’t need to configure anymore. And the cable is easy to find – all you need is a regular micro-USB cable, such as the one used in modern smartphones.

To use a micro-USB cable to connect the controller to a computer:

1) Plug the smaller end of the micro-USB cable into the port on the front of the controller (below the light bar).

2) Plug the larger end of the micro-USB cable into a USB port on your computer.

3) The cable connection has been terminated. You can go to the next step. (If you are using Windows 10, go directly to step 3).

Method 2: Connect your PS4 Controller via Bluetooth

You may not like cables. Cables are easy to knot. They tend to create confusion. And you may be wondering if you can plug it in without a cable.

Yes, you can connect the controller via Bluetooth.

If your computer has Bluetooth, you can pair your controller directly with your computer. But if not, you’ll need an external Bluetooth adapter to allow the computer to communicate with the controller.

There are two options you can try:

  1. The Sony DualShock 4 wireless USB adapter. This is the official PlayStation Bluetooth adapter that is completely compatible with the PS4 controller.
  2. Third-party USB Bluetooth adapter. We recommend using Kinivo BTD-400. It is a cheaper option but still able to recognize the PS4 controller.

To make sure the Bluetooth adapter is working properly, install the latest Bluetooth adapter driver on your computer. If you don’t know how to do it manually, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the appropriate drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system is running on your computer, you don’t have to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t have to worry about making a mistake during installation.

You can download and install drivers by using the free or professional version of Driver Easy. But in the Pro version, it only takes 2 clicks (and you’ll get full support and a 30-day money-back guarantee):

1) Download and install the Easy driver.

2) Run Driver Easy and press the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will scan your computer and detect driver problems.

Third-party controllers will vary depending on what you get, but most should use the same standard XInput connections. It usually lists its compatibility on Amazon, so make sure you buy one that is compatible or go for something more popular.

Figure Out Which Xbox Controller You Own

For starters, the Xbox Wireless Gamepad that comes with the Xbox Series S / X, and now widely available as an Xbox Wireless Gamepad, is almost identical to the Xbox One Controller. They both support Xbox and Bluetooth wireless communication, and the methods for connecting them to a computer are identical. The instructions below apply to both generations of the gamepad.

Original Xbox One controllers do not have wireless connectivity, but the gamepads that come with the Xbox One S and later include Xbox wireless and Bluetooth. You can use both controllers wirelessly with your computer, but the process is different; you need to get a wireless dongle for non-bluetooth gamepads. The good news is that Bluetooth controllers have been in production for so long that if you’ve bought yours in the last four years, there’s a good chance it already has Bluetooth.

To determine if you have an Xbox Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth controller, you’ll need to look at the plastic surrounding the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the front of the controller, with no seams, you have a Bluetooth gamepad. If it’s the same plastic as the bumper buttons, with a seam between the guide button and the controller surface, it’s a Bluetooth-free gamepad. If it has a small, rectangular Capture button between the Menu and View buttons, and a USB-C port on the top instead of a micro USB, it’s an Xbox Series controller, and it also has Bluetooth.

Connect Your Xbox Controller to PC With a Wired Connection

It is very simple, but you need a physical cable connecting the controller to the computer. Here’s how you do it.

Connect one end of the USB-to-micro USB or USB-to-USB-C cable (depending on the version of the controller) to the controller.

Connect the other end to your computer

That’s it! It will automatically set up on Windows 10 and work with virtually any game on your computer.

By default, Windows 10 computers do not support PS4 controllers. If you connect via a USB cable, some Steam games may allow it. This is the first time you are using a PS4 controller on your computer and it is not working.

Locating the Xbox One Controller in the Device Manager

If your drivers are fully updated, there’s one solution that usually seems most logical. It turns out that not every micro USB cable works with the controller and you need to use a certain type. This problem is caused by the fact that some micro USB cables only provide power transfer and will work with the Xbox 360 console. However, the Xbox One controller can only use data sync cables that provide both power and data transfer. The best example of this problem is the fact that you cannot use a cable from a regular Xbox One (Charge and Playset) controller to connect to your PC because no data is being transferred.

This can make it difficult for users to find the perfect cable. The cable you want to use should be micro USB Type B, and it should be a data / sync cable, so make sure you tell the tech guy what you want. Also, if you need to turn on the controller first then plug the cable in for it to work. Also, do not connect to USB 3.0 ports.

Use Xbox Accessories (Windows 10)

If you’re still having problems, open the Microsoft Store and search for the Xbox Accessories app. Install this app, then connect your Xbox One controller and check for a firmware update. If so, update and restart your computer. If this works, your controller will be automatically detected and you can make full use of it.

Xbox accessories

Macs support Xbox One controllers wirelessly at no extra cost, but you’ll need additional software if you want to connect the controller via USB. Specifically, you need the 360Controller driver, which extends the support for Xbox One wired USB controllers.

Original Xbox (Xbox “1”)

You’ll need an adapter and some custom drivers, but it doesn’t seem quite easy. MacOS has an older driver, but may not work on newer versions of macOS. Also, if you’re crazy, you can drop the adapter altogether and connect several cables together, although we don’t recommend doing so.

Nintendo Switch controller

The Nintendo Switch Pro controller works automatically when connected via Bluetooth on Windows and macOS, but you’ll need to configure it in Steam to use it in games.

Wii Remotes and Wii U Pro Controllers

Windows will connect the controller by default, but may not be used as a controller in all applications. Dolphin, the Wii emulator, supports using them as input, but we didn’t have any on hand to test system-wide use.

Mac is operated in the same way – only in Dolphin. System-wide use is technically supported, but we strongly recommend that you find a new controller. MacOS Sierra broke support for the sole driver, Wjoy, but was updated on a new fork. However, the current version is also not working, so you will have to build the latest commit from source in Xcode, update a few build targets, fix a few bugs, sign this with your Apple developer account, and then finally that you have to boot into recovery mode and disable Integrity Protection to install it. Only then can the controller be properly connected.

The controller is the source of most controller problems. Your PS4 may be the source of the problem. Before continuing with troubleshooting, please restart your console to avoid this possibility.

How to Reconnect Your Xbox Controller to Your Console

When using the Xbox controller wirelessly, you can turn it off by holding down the Xbox button on it for about five seconds. When the light goes out, the controller is turned off.

Note that if your Xbox controller is already paired with your console, pressing the Xbox button will turn on the system. You should still be able to pair it wirelessly using one of the methods above, but you’ll likely want to turn off the console after doing so (or turn it off and unplug it before you begin).

After you connect your Xbox controller to your computer using any of the methods above, you’ll need to pair the controller with your Xbox again the next time you want to use it there. To do this using the wired method, connect the controller to your Xbox console with a USB cable, and then press the Xbox button to pair.

To pair the controller wirelessly, press the pairing button on the system. It is located on the left side of the disc tray on the original Xbox One console and in the lower right corner of the front panel under the power button on the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. On the Xbox Series S | X, there is a port next to the USB port on the front of the system.

After pressing this button, turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button, then hold the pair button at the top to pair it.

If you have an Xbox Series S | X controller, there’s a convenient shortcut to toggle between paired devices. Once you’re connected to your Bluetooth device, double-press the pair button on the top of your controller to instantly switch to your last Xbox wireless connection (usually your console). Then press the pairing button twice to reconnect to the Bluetooth device you are using.

Connect an Xbox Controller to Your PC Easily

You have many options for connecting an Xbox One or Xbox Series S | X controller to your computer. Whether you want to connect with a USB cable for the simplest option or prefer to connect wirelessly via Bluetooth, now you understand the methods available.
