9 Fixes For Dx11 Feature Level 10.0 Is Required To Run The Engine

DX11 or DirectX 11 is an API or application programming interface that handles multimedia tasks in Microsoft Windows environments.

The software is stable; however, sometimes it shows an error and causes errors like “DX11 feature level 10.0 is required to start the engine” in the system. The error occurs when the system does not have the appropriate level of Direct3D hardware features required for role-playing games such as ARK, Fortnite, Valorant, PUBG, etc.

What is DX11 Feature Level 10.0?

DirectX 11 is an Application Programming Interface (API), the latest generation of APIs that can handle the relationship between multimedia hardware such as PS, graphics card, and sound card.

You need to update your software with Windows to prevent unnecessary bugs from affecting your gaming experience.

You should also check that your system’s graphics processing unit (GPU) meets the requirements to run the application.

Depending on the version of Windows you are using, you may not need a new version of DirectX. See the section below these steps to make sure DirectX will work on your computer. If you are unsure which version your computer has installed, at the very bottom of this page are instructions on how to do this.

How to Download and Install DirectX

Visit the DirectX download page on the Microsoft website.

Select your preferred language from the drop-down list, and then select Download to save the installation file to your computer.

Open the dxwebsetup.exe file and complete the DirectX installation by following the directions on the Microsoft website or the setup program. Installation should take less than a minute.

Please read the setup procedure carefully. You may be prompted to install something else like Bing Bar. Just uncheck what you are not interested in to avoid installation.

Missing DirectX files will be replaced if necessary. See the next section below for more information about DirectX on specific versions of Windows.

Restart your computer even if you are not prompted to do so.

After restarting your computer, check to see if updating to the latest version of DirectX has resolved the problem.

DirectX Windows Versions

All versions of Windows do not support all versions of DirectX. Here’s more about how each version of DirectX works in the Windows family.

DirectX 12 is included with Windows 10 and is only supported on this version of Windows. DirectX 12 related file updates are available only through Windows Update. A standalone version of DirectX 12 is not available.

DirectX 11.4 and 11.3 are only supported on Windows 10. As with DirectX 12.0, updates are only delivered through Windows Update.

DirectX 11.2 is only supported on Windows 10 and Windows 8 (8.1+). Any updates to DirectX 11.2-related files are made available from Windows Update on these versions of Windows. There is no standalone download available for DirectX 11.2.

DirectX 11.1 is supported on Windows 10 and Windows 8. Windows 7 (SP1) is also supported, but only after installing the platform update for Windows 7.

DirectX 11.0 is supported on Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7. Windows Vista support is available only after installing the platform update for Windows Vista.

DirectX 10 is supported on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista.

DirectX 9 is supported on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. If you have a program that requires DirectX 9 on Windows 10 or Windows 8, installing the download version (the process above) is the way to fix this – it won’t “downgrade” your DirectX 10/11/12 installation! It is also the latest version of DirectX that is compatible with Windows XP.

DirectX 11 is supported on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. DirectX 11.1 is supported on Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Server 2012. Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 support and ship with DirectX 11.2. Windows 10 has DirectX 12 installed.

What Version of DirectX Do I Have?

You can easily open the panel to see everything about the version of DirectX you have installed on your computer. To do this, press Windows Key + R to open a Run dialog, then type dxdiag. Moments later, you’ll see a window titled DirectX Diagnostic Tool:

At the bottom of this System Information panel, you’ll see the DirectX version where you can confirm what you’ve installed. Again, if you are using Windows 10 you should see DirectX 12. Check Windows for updates if not.

While you’re here, you should click on the Display tab (if you’re using more than one monitor you’ll see several of them) to make sure your computer supports all DirectX features. DirectDraw Acceleration, Direct3D Acceleration, and AGP Texture Acceleration should be marked as Enabled.

If not, you need to update your computer’s hardware to take advantage of these features.

How Do I Download DirectX?

The method for getting the latest version of DirectX depends on the version of Windows you are using.

Windows 10: Cannot download any standalone DirectX packages. Microsoft provides DirectX updates through Windows Update. This way you won’t even have to update DirectX after installing a new game. Go to Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update and click Check for Updates to see if you can update DirectX.

Windows 8.1: Like Windows 10, there is no link to manually update DirectX. Windows 8.1 includes DirectX 11.2, which is the latest version that is compatible with Windows 8. Check Windows Update in Settings> Update & Recovery> Windows Update for DirectX updates.

Windows 7: The latest version of DirectX for Windows 7 is 11.1. This is available in Windows 7 Service Pack 1. To download it, you must install Windows Update KB2670838, either manually or through Windows Update.

Earlier versions of Windows: Windows XP and Vista are no longer supported by Microsoft. Because they’re so old, you probably don’t play any modern games on them. Finally, we will note that the latest version of DirectX for Vista is 11.0 with Service Pack 2. On Windows XP, you are stuck with DirectX 9.0c which you can update with Microsoft’s web installer.

Driver Easy offers two versions of its software: FREE and Pro. The Pro version offers ease of upgrade and a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can use the software by following the steps below:

DirectX download

While DirectX is included as an integral part of Windows operating systems, if you feel you need to update it, you can update DirectX via Windows Update by applying the latest service pack or platform update – or download and install directly.

1. You can use Windows Update to update DirectX to the latest available version. Apply the latest service pack or platform update that may be offered on your system. You can also manually download and apply an update package that updates DirectX to the latest version for your operating system. For more information, please visit KB179113.

2. You can search for DirectX from the Microsoft Download Center. The DirectX End-User Runtime web installer will install the DirectX files that are missing from your computer. After downloading and running the web installer, you will need to restart your system.

If you think you have problems installing DirectX, or are having difficulty playing a game or movie properly on your Windows PC, you can run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

How To Fix Error DX11 Feature Level 10.0

When trying to play Fortnite (or a game like PUBG or ARK), you often get the following message:

Function level DX11 10.0 is required to start the engine

If you receive this message, don’t panic. It probably means your computer has an outdated version of DirectX or you have some kind of problem with your graphics card.

To fix the problem, do the following

1. Restart Your Computer and the Game

Sometimes strange things happen with computers. So, the first thing you should always try is restarting your computer. Then try restarting the game.

2. Install Any Updates to the Game and to Windows

Epic Games and other game developers frequently release updates and patches for their games. Check for an update for the game on the site you downloaded it from.

If so, install it and follow further instructions such as restarting your computer.

You can also update Windows if there are any updates waiting to be installed.

3. Install or Update Your Graphics Card Driver

Sometimes a missing, corrupted, or outdated graphics driver can cause the DX11 error message. To update your graphics driver in Windows 10, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button and type Device Manager in the search bar, then select it from the list of options.
  2. Expand the Graphics Adapters category, right-click the name of your graphics adapter and select Update Driver.
  3. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
  4. If no driver is found, you can search for one on the graphics card manufacturer’s website, and then follow their instructions to install it.

If for some reason updating the driver does not work, you can try reinstalling the driver by following these steps:

  1. As in the previous steps, open Device Manager and right-click on the name of your graphics card.
  2. Select Uninstall.
  3. Restart your computer and Windows will try to reinstall the graphics driver.

4. Install the Latest Version of DirectX

DirectX is a Windows API that allows you to run 3D software on your computer. Often times, Microsoft updates this API, and game developers such as Epic Games use these changes to improve their games.

For this reason, you need to update your DirectX version periodically.

To check which version of DirectX your computer is using, click the Windows and R keys simultaneously. This will open the Run dialog, enter dxdiag and click OK.

This will open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

On the System tab, you’ll see the version of DirectX installed on your computer, and on the Display tab, you’ll see the feature levels installed. To run Fortnite you need to have at least DX11 installed and feature levels 10.0.

If you have an older version of DirectX, you’ll need to download and install the latest version of DirectX.

Sometimes you may not be able to update DirectX to the correct version because your operating system is too old. In that case, you need to install a newer version of Windows on your computer or buy a newer computer.

To check which version of DirectX your computer is using, click the Windows and R keys simultaneously. This will open the Run dialog, enter dxdiag and click OK .

Summary

  • Having the latest version of DirectX – DX12 allows you to enjoy the performance gains in all areas. Virtually all new game releases are designed and developed with the DX12 platform in mind.
  • DirectX cannot be uninstalled, so if you have game crashes or artifacts, it is most likely a display or GPU related issue. Whatever you do, DO NOT install third party applications that say “Uninstall DirectX 12 for free”.
  • Always download DirectX directly from Microsoft to avoid outdated versions and malware.
