Your computer has several hardware components and can run thousands of different programs. Below is a complete list of ways to find information about parts of your computer and what’s running on it.

Types of computer

In the past, it was easier to identify the type of computer you were using. Currently, computers are considered desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablets, hybrid computers and smartphones. Below is a visual example of the more popular computers for a better comparison between the different types of computers.

Checking The CPU And What Speed It Is

The first thing most people want to know when looking at a computer’s specs is what processor (CPU) the computer has, and luckily for us, this is one of the easiest pieces of information to find. If you are using Windows 10, you are two mouse clicks away from this information.

To check what processor your computer has, do the following:

  • Right-click the Windows tab in the lower left corner of the desktop
  • Select and click “System.” In the pop-up menu.’
  • Under “Device Specifications> Processor” you will see a list of the processors on your computer

As we said, this is really one of the easiest things to check on any computer.

Checking Which GPU You Have

Once you’ve figured out what processor your computer is using, many will naturally want to find out which graphics processor (graphics processing unit) your computer also has. You’ll be pleased to know that checking your GPU is as simple as finding the CPU you have. However, you will have to make one more click.

To check what graphics processor your computer has, follow these steps:

  • As before, right-click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the desktop
  • On the menu that appears, click the “Device Manager” tab
  • In “Device Manager”, click the “>” arrow next to “Display cards’
  • In the drop-down menu, you will see the graphics processor used by your computer.

Again, a simple task. It’s worth mentioning, however, that some people may encounter two options in the “Display Adapter” drop-down menu and this is nothing to worry about. In this case, your computer has both integrated graphics and a dedicated standalone graphics card – not a bad thing.

However, the one you’re looking for is a dedicated graphics card, which will be the more powerful of the two, and the one your computer uses to process graphics. Usually it will be the second of the two options.

If your computer has an Intel processor, you probably have integrated graphics, and it’s usually “Intel HD 400 Graphics”. All of this means that along with the actual GPU, your CPU has its own built-in GPU. This will always be less efficient than your standalone GPU.

Your GPU is what you need when you replace your PC or upgrade, and it will usually be some variation of the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 950,960, 1050, 1070, 1080, and so on. If it’s AMD, it’ll be some form of Radeon R 3-9.

Laptops, netbooks, and hybrid computers often have the model and serial number on the bottom of the computer. If you cannot find this information, manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Acer also have tools on the computer and websites to help identify the computer.

Purpose of the PC/Laptop, What will you be using it for mostly?

What will you be using this computer for, and especially what kind of software and workloads will you be using on a daily basis?

Let’s take a look at a few common use cases and what they mean (you can skip some of these parts until you find your use case):

Video Editing – Active Work

Editing video on your computer uses its hardware resources in a very specific way. For example, the best performing video editing processors tend to have high core clock speeds and around 8-16 cores, such as the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X.

Video editing can take a lot of RAM, and you should look for at least 16GB or even 32GB for serious video editing on 2K or 4K materials.

Storage is another essential ingredient as video material can become quite large and is constantly being used by video editing software such as Premiere Pro.

This means that having a storage device that reads and writes data quickly will increase your video editing efficiency. NVMe SSDs such as the Samsung 970 EVO PLUS and 970 PRO are the most efficient storage devices.

They have a slightly higher price but are well worth it.

Graphics card plays a minor role in video editing, it can speed up the processing and encoding of some effects, but it is usually not the main factor in video editing performance.

Video Editing – Rendering / Processing

The important thing to remember is that rendering a timeline into a movie, which usually involves compression with codecs, is something that uses computer resources a bit differently than when you are actively working on a project.

The rendering process is something that requires CPUs optimized for multi-core processing versus high-core clocks when running actively.

So, if you process a lot, meaning you frequently load your material and convert it to otherwise compressed material, choose processors with a large number of cores, such as the AMD Threadripper 3970X or the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, which are excellent value in this field.

Graphic Design

If you’re a graphic designer and spend most of your time working in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or other pixel and vector-based software, you won’t need a multi-core processor, but rather a high clock speed processor.

It will speed up your canvas, UI and work experience, make your software fast and responsive, and make your work experience lag-free.

Some great processors I can recommend are the AMD Ryzen 5900X / AMD Ryzen 5600X and the Intel i9 10900K.

Since they’re already fairly high-end for graphic designers, you can also save some money and pick the excellent AMD Ryzen 5 3600 as an affordable choice.

Although Graphic Designer can use a lot of RAM compared to working with moving pictures and animations, you can get away with less. A good benchmark is 16 GB of RAM for graphic design.

The GPU plays a minor role in the graphic design workload, and many mid- and high-tier GPUs do well in typical graphic design software.

What is your Budget

You can buy computers on any budget. If you have a lot of money you can usually buy a more powerful computer, but the most expensive computers are not necessarily the best for your type of work.

That’s why it’s so important to know what you’ll mainly be using your computer for.

Purchasing a $ 6000 GPU-Rendering-Monster Machine may be slower for 3D modeling or photo editing than a $ 2000 computer which is optimized for 3D modeling and photo editing.

Buying expensive processors with a huge number of cores will not help at all with fast animation and motion design work, just for processor rendering.

Sometimes less is more, so think about how much you’re willing to spend on your new PC and I’ll tell you which PC is best for your purposes within your budget.

Maybe you don’t even need to spend your entire budget.

  • To check the RAM in your device, start by pressing the “Start” button in the lower left corner of your laptop or monitor screen.
  • As above, look for “My Computer” or “This PC” in the left side bar. After opening the folder, right-click on it. Follow this by clicking on “Properties” at the bottom of the list of options you see.

    On the other hand, the first number, right after the CPU, tells you your computer’s CPU Generation. The number of generations refers to the new hardware architecture of the processor. For example, in the image below, the computer has a 3rd generation Intel i7 processor with 8 GB of RAM.

Additional software options

Much of the above information is also available through third-party software such as CPU-Z and Speccy.

On CPU-Z, you’ll want to use the “Memory” and “SPD” tabs to see information about your RAM. Memory will show the memory type and current frequency information. The SPD tab, which stands for “serial presence detection”, contains information related to the RAM modules themselves, including information about the manufacturer and part number.

In Speccy, you’ll want to switch to the “RAM” view from the left menu. There you should find practically all information about RAM and memory you need. You may need to expand the “SPD” dropdown to get more detailed RAM information depending on what you are trying to find.

Physical RAM module

Most consumer RAM modules come with a label that identifies the type of RAM. Typically, these labels will either be a sticker stuck directly onto the RAM stick, engraved on the fancy heat spreader on higher performance modules, or they can be printed directly onto the PCB. In these cases, you’ll usually find the part number that you can then search on your favorite search engine to find out what the rest of the specs are. If you cannot locate the label or ID anywhere, it may be prudent to use one of the methods described above.

These options should help you find out what RAM your computer is using. If you want to upgrade, make sure you get RAM of the same type and format as you cannot directly convert DDR3 to DDR4 without having to replace your motherboard.
