You have more than a few Minecraft multiplayer options; some of them require an internet connection, while you can play other methods offline and from the same room.

Minecraft Multiplayer for Public Servers

Java Edition

How to Back Up Your Minecraft Realm

There are two ways to back up your Minecraft Realms worlds. The first uses a server-side backup system that is done automatically in the background, so even if you don’t do routine backups, there are server-side backups you can restore from. The second method is to download the Minecraft Realms world to your local computer where it can be stored, played, or both.

We’ll look at both methods, but you’ll need to start Minecraft first, click “Minecraft Realms” in the main menu, and then click the configuration key seen in the screenshot above.

Force a Server Backup

At the beginning of this section, we noticed that server-side backups are performed automatically in the background at specified intervals while the server is active. Interestingly, there is no GUI button or console command in the game where you can force a backup, such as typing “/ backup” while playing on the server.

Nevertheless, if you need to, you can force a backup in a clever way. If you and your friends plan to make a major change to your setups that would be really annoying (if not impossible) to reverse, this is a great trick. Open the configuration menu of your Realms server and unload your current world and temporarily replace it with a minigame by selecting the Minigames button shown above and selecting a game.

It’s a completely undocumented trick, but it works like a charm. When you switch to a minigame level (you don’t even need to load and play the minigame), Realms automatically takes an instant backup of your current world before discharging it and replacing it with a minigame. Just select your world (eg “World 1”) to reload it and the backup process will be completed.

Download a Server Backup to Your Computer

If you want to have a copy of the world from the Realms server on your local PC, for archival purposes or for offline play, you can easily download it.

Make sure the world you want to back up is the active world. For demonstration purposes, we are downloading “World 1” which, as you can see in the screenshot above, is the world currently loaded. After selecting the world you want to download a backup for, select “World Backup”.

Here you can select “Get Latest” to get the latest backup of your world. A warning screen will appear, indicating that the current world will be downloaded and added to the single player worlds on the local computer. Click yes that you want to continue and the world will be downloaded and saved with the other single player worlds on your computer.

From here you can load the single player game and recreate the map, or copy the worlds folder from the Minecraft directory and store it separate from Minecraft to make sure it stays in pristine condition (which if you’re only doing this for backup purposes and not for recovery local, we strongly recommend). How to Restore Your Minecraft Realm

Just as there are two ways to back up your Minecraft Realms world, there are two ways to restore it. You can restore your worlds from server-side backups (which is a one-click affair and can be done even if you don’t have local backups) or from saves on your local computer.

Restore from a Server-Side Backup

You’re in the game, you realize you’ve just confused something pretty big (for example, I don’t know, setting fire to the entire village’s roofline) and want to immediately go back to your last save point. Just jump back into the setup menu (via the wrench icon on the main Minecraft Realms screen) and select the “World Backup” button like we did in the previous section of the tutorial.

Select the little red restore arrow next to the world version you want to restore. You will get a confirmation screen detailing the time and date the restore was created and asking you to confirm or decline the restore. Confirm restore to continue.

After your restore is complete, which should only take a moment or two, you can jump back into your world.

Here is our village, seen from the opposite side, with the roof lines intact thanks to our fire restoration technique.

Restore from a Local Backup

To restore from a local backup, you essentially follow the same steps we outlined in our guide to uploading custom worlds to Minecraft Realms, except this time you’re not transferring the world you downloaded or started on your local computer, but the world you downloaded or run on your local computer previously downloaded from the Realms server.

Select the world you want to restore, in our case “World 1”, then select “Reset world”.

In the reset world menu, you’ll be warned that the process will delete your current world, and then you’ll be prompted to make your choice to change the world. Select “Upload World”.

Look for a local entry that matches the Realms name, world name, and backup date of the file you want to upload. You can see in the screenshot above that the world is clearly labeled “Blockland (World 1)”. If you do not see the world you want to transfer listed, it means it is not in your local / saves / directory (most likely because you moved it elsewhere during the backup process), you need to make a copy of the world folder and dump it from back to the / saves directory.

Select the “Upload” button and your local world save will be uploaded to your Minecraft Realms server. Make this world map up-to-date, then jump back into the world and resume the game as if it were the day the map was backed up.
