It doesn’t matter how powerful your gaming PC is or how good it looks if it’s making a lot of noise. My previous gaming system, which I bought back in 2013, was the first to be fairly quiet, but made more and more noise over the years. After all, with no headphones or headset on, sitting next to the computer was very annoying just because it was so loud.

Now that I’ve switched to another system, I’ll give you some professional tips to help you make your gaming PC much quieter.

  • Switch to silent PC cases
  • Install high-quality fans
  • Switch from HDD to SSD
  • Install the fan speed controller
  • Use certified power adapters
  • Install sound insulation
  • Replace old components
  • Install an efficient CPU cooler
  • Improve airflow inside the case

Before I begin, however, remember that your computer can be as quiet as the loudest element. For example, if you only buy quiet parts but a noisy hard drive, you’ll hear it while the system is up and running.

Switch To Silent PC Cases:

The case can have a big impact on how much noise you hear while the system is running. For best results, it’s best to choose an enclosure with no side panels open and good build quality. The case should also provide good mounting options, so there is no vibration that generates unnecessary noise when playing.

My previous PC case was fairly cheap so it had many parts in cheap plastic that started to vibrate. Especially the side panels. Due to the vibrations, the housing makes deafening noises that were incredibly annoying. The only option to stop the vibration momentarily was to screw the side panels fairly tight, but it was definitely not the perfect way.

For my new custom gaming system, I am using be quiet! Pure Base 500, a high-quality case. Instead of plastic windows, this case uses thick glass panels, and the metal / plastic parts used are also much more durable. Compared to the previous case, Pure Base 500 is much quieter.

Power supply

A computer’s power supply contains a fan and is usually the next major cause of computer noise. If your power supply has a power switch, disconnect it from the motherboard and turn it on yourself to determine the noise level.

Otherwise, you can consider purchasing a new low-dBA power supply. Even fanless desktop power supplies with dBA 0 are available.

Hard drive

Some hard drives in computers can be really noisy, a noisy hard drive can be recognized by listening to the noise level as information is retrieved from the hard drive. For example, if your computer is noisy when booting up, this is a good indicator of a noisy hard drive.

Some hard drives can also be constantly noisy, causing constant noise when the computer is powered on. You can determine the hard drive noise level by temporarily disconnecting the hard drive and turning on the computer.

To reduce the volume of the hard drive without replacing it, enclose the hard drive in a case to make it quieter. However, keep in mind that many hard drive enclosures also have fans to increase the noise of the computer. Alternatively, you can replace the old hard drive with a new one.

The SSD drive produces no noise and is faster than a traditional hard drive.

How to fix some fan noise issues

Fans make noise in many ways. Here are a few things to check and apply to keep fans running quieter.

Sometimes it is not enough to just replace the fan. Noise can be generated by the fan from several different factors.

What to know about fans when replacing or diagnosing fan noise

The most ideal situation is to install large fans. In this way, the fan can rotate slowly while generating enough air for adequate cooling or extraction.

A small fan can be annoying. The smaller you go, the higher the level of whine you’ll get.

If this is the situation you are in, consider upgrading to a larger fan size. If this option is not possible, slow down the fan until the noise level is acceptable.

When buying a new fan, at least choose ball bearing fans. There are more sophisticated bearing technologies, but you won’t need them.

plain bearing is the cheapest bearing option in a fan and wears out quickly.

Before you know it, a plain bearing fan will use more power and be louder. Quite often it becomes noisy the first time it is turned on, and as the bearing heats up and expands, the noise becomes lower.

The ball bearing fan lasts much longer. It will remain silent for a long time, reducing the need for regular replacement.

How to slow down a fan’s speed (RPM’s)

If the fan has four wires and is connected directly to the 4-pin fan connector on the motherboard, you can often adjust the fan speed in the BIOS.

Most motherboards have this feature, and it can save you a ton of time in fan tuning.

If your motherboard’s BIOS doesn’t provide good enough settings, download a free program called SpeedFan.

It takes a bit of learning, but will give you great control over the fan speed.

How to use SpeedFan:

Observe the airflow

Make sure the holes that air flows through due to fan operation are large enough.

If the airflow is restricted, it can be difficult to reduce fan noise.

For an insight into how this affects the fan, take a spinning fan and place your hand in front of it and then behind it to restrict airflow.

You should notice, on at least one of the sides you restricted, the fan speed increases and becomes louder.

Make sure the filter material is correct and allows air to circulate easily.

You don’t need coarse filter material. It just holds up more dust.

Make sure you maintain the filters to avoid clogging the filters causing additional fan noise.

Fan mounting

There are quite a few computer cases out there that go out of their way to produce rubber mounts for the fans.

I never found it necessary when you have a large enough fan and it spins at low speed.

Just make sure the fan is screwed in with all the screws and none are loose.

Also make sure the surface where the fan is screwed is 100% flat.

As soon as you screw the fan to an uneven surface, it will start to collide its blades with its own housing.

This is because the fan casing is twisted and the small gap between the fan blades and the inside of the casing is closed.

Start your computer up with no drives plugged in

Computer drives, such as a hard drive, can generate a lot of noise.

With the computer completely turned off, disconnect all cables attached to all drives.

Make sure you know which cable belongs to which drive. A mistake can change the drive’s priorities and cause the computer to fail to start.

After starting the computer, observe the noise levels. If your PC sounds much quieter, it’s time to get a new drive.

A mechanical hard drive has platters that rotate at high revolutions per minute. Sometimes the spindle bearings wear out and cause noise.

At this point, I strongly suggest you back up all your data and replace the drive as soon as possible.

When your hard drive becomes noisy, this is a clear indication that it has exceeded its useful life.

It’s a blessing when the case has rubberized disc mounts. This will help a lot with head movement noise.

Make sure the fan is secured. Some CPU fans have mounting screws or clamps. If they are not safe, you may feel vibration noises.

Replace old fans with new versions

A system that is always loud suffers from bad fans, too many fans, or both. See what’s on your desktop. Do you only see one or two fans? Then they are probably cheap or old and make more noise than they should be.

We have good news and bad news. The bad news is that these fans will have to be replaced. The good news is that the fans are cheap! Mostly. Most users will want to look for fans that offer an adjustable speed switch or ones that support fan speed modulation through a program like SpeedFan. For example, the Noctua NF-S12B fans are the best PC fans we found, and they cost around $ 15 apiece.

Here’s another trick – big fans are quieter than little ones. It may sound strange, but it’s true. The air flow depends on the size and speed of the fan. A large fan does not have to work as hard as a small one to move the same amount of air, and fan speed is the main generator of fan noise. Ideally, you’d be best to use the largest, slowest fans that will fit in your case.

Therefore, too many fans can be a problem. The goal is to circulate as much air as possible through your computer as efficiently as possible, so adding more fans will not only make your computer louder, but may also have little or no effect on your computer’s airflow. Airflow is a complex topic that is still under discussion among PC enthusiasts. However, most agree that it’s best to have a single channel for airflow through the computer. For example, the fans on the front of the case will pull in air while the fan on the back is blowing it out.

In such a situation, a fan mounted on the top of the case, which draws in air, will make the computer louder without doing too much to cool it down. It all depends a lot on the case and components, but in most cases you don’t need a fan on every mount available.

If you have too many fans, remove some! Start with the fans on the side or top of the case, then go to the intake fans on the front, and last to the exhaust fans on the back. Make sure you leave at least one intake fan and one exhaust fan.

After you’ve installed new fans or removed add-ons, you’ll want to see how your PC’s cooling works. SpeedFan can report temperatures, as does PC Wizard, Real Temp, and HWMonitor. The processor should be idle at a temperature not higher than 50 degrees Celsius and remain below 70 degrees Celsius under load. If you have a graphics card, you should also monitor it. It should idle below 60 degrees Celsius and stay below 95 degrees Celsius under load.

Clean Out the Dust

Dust is one of those unfortunate inevitabilities when it comes to computers. Like blue screens and dead hard drives, you’ll face it at some point. Excess dust means excess heat, which means the fans spin faster to keep you cool – and if you smoke or have pets in your home, the problem can be quite serious.

So grab a screwdriver, open your desktop or laptop, and give it a good throw with a dust whisk (or an electric whisk if it’s really bad). If your fan is clicking or making other abnormal noises, this is also a good time to make sure the blades aren’t hitting a stray power cord or something. Finally, if you have a desktop computer, consider putting filters on your intake fans to prevent future dust build-up.

Replace a Loud (or Failing) Fan Entirely

If none of the above fixes help, it may be time to name one (or more) fans. Sometimes, even when the fan is working, it’s just too noisy. Smaller fans tend to be louder, so if you have a 90mm fan you can replace it with something bigger (or get rid of it altogether without affecting the temperature), start there. If the processor heat sink is on the small side, replace it with a larger one. Not only will a larger fan be quieter, the larger fin area will dissipate heat more efficiently.

At other times, the fan may be on its way to a dusty grave. This can often cause a clicking, humming or grinding noise that is difficult to ignore. You can fix this with a drop of sewing machine oil in the bearing, but it’s best to do this before symptoms develop. If that doesn’t work, it’s time to replace the new fan. When searching Amazon and Newegg, look at the “CFM” and “dBA” numbers in the specs – the first is airflow and the second is noise level. With the right fan and a bit of preventive maintenance, next time you can make your PC sound like a jet engine in a few years.

Method 3: Change your CPU Cooler

The CPU cooler will be one of the hardest working fans on your system. Most CPUs ship with a standard cooler which is usually not the most efficient and therefore will usually be louder than an aftermarket cooler. If your CPU fan is making too much noise, replacing it with a larger aftermarket model is a great idea, once again Noctua and Be Quiet! there are great choices here.

Again, make sure you are purchasing the correct cooler for your CPU.

We are now entering more expensive options, but it is known that power supplies cause quite a lot of noise in systems. Replacing the power supply is relatively easy, but unfortunately it won’t be cheap.
