There are many different plant materials that can be used for smudging. Some popular ones are sage, cedar, sweet grass, and lavender.

What Is Smudging?

Smearing up a way to energetically clean up a space to invite positive energy. By blurring the space, you burn the plant material. The smoke fills and cleans the environment.

My personal destination is palo santo, wood from South America. I believe it has a sweet, bright and mint energy, perfect for everyday use.

White sage is perhaps the most popular herb for smearing. It is associated with cleanliness and has a strong and heavy presence. This is definitely handy when you need a serious space cleanup.

As smoke rises, our desires and intentions ascend and mingle in the universe, connecting heaven, earth, and humanity.

Smoke sacrifices can be found in Buddhism, indigenous practices in the US, and many other spiritual religions. The smoke ceremony creates transformation and blesses the space and its inhabitants.

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, take the time to do your research. Mindfulness of the smoking ritual begins as you stockpile, so practice it with ease and care. Try to slow down and take your time through this first step.

Maintain sacred ritual materials by using them only for space purification. You can store other supplies on your temple or altar.

In feng shui we also use dried orange peels called “chen pei”. It is also quite intense. As a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner, I also use juniper to smear and cleanse.

Dozens of new little online stores appear that offer unique (and wonderful) smudge sticks with all kinds of ingredients like rose, mugwort, rosemary and more.

However, rituals and mantras do not have to revolve around ethically questionable cultural practices. You can build a personal mantra for yourself that will help you stay focused and go through each day regardless of it.

Smudge your home or living space

In this case, direct the sage smoke to all surfaces and spaces in the home or living room. Be thorough.

Some recommend working clockwise around the house, ending back where you started, especially for spiritual purposes. Others recommend counterclockwise.

Do what best suits your situation and follow your intuition.


You can also smoke and burn sage to improve the smell, smell and mood.

Just lift the sage smoke in and around your home. You can put the bundle in a fireproof bowl or burner and let it burn for a while.

Make sure your smudge stick is completely extinguished. You can do this by rubbing the lit end into a small bowl of ash or sand.

Burning sage has many benefits as a spiritual practice. Some studies support some of the health benefits of sage, such as its antimicrobial properties and increased alertness, but more research is needed.

There is little research into smudging as a practice beyond the cultural practice of ritual.

Remember: Burning sage is a sacred religious practice in some Native American cultures. Treat the ritual with respect.

What are the other benefits of burning sage?

The benefits of aging a home aren’t just spiritual. Sage is considered an incredibly cleansing agent and is capable of removing many of the toxins you breathe every day, including fumes from paints, chemicals, and cleaners.

  1. It is antibacterial. A 2007 study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacol linked sage smoking to the reduction of airborne bacteria, which means it could help you start over in more ways than one.
  2. It helps you feel less stressed. A University of Mississippi research project found that white sage is rich in compounds that activate receptors in the brain responsible for reducing stress.
  3. It can help you sleep better. Research has shown that sage can help relieve insomnia, which is definitely another way to improve this positive energy.
  4. It can improve your mood. In 2014, scientists discovered that white sage is used to treat anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.
  5. It can help you think better. While more research is needed, a 2016 review found that sage can improve cognition and may even be useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease.

All right, I’m in. How do I sage my house?

First, you need to think about what you will be using in your practice. You don’t have to use white sage to clean your home (this is your place, after all), but with the over-harvesting of white sage in recent years, if you do decide to go for sage it is extremely important to buy from a sustainable and home based business. “There are a lot of big companies out there trying to trick consumers into buying inauthentic versions and making money from it, so it’s also important to buy honestly,” say Cliffords.

When you’re ready, the first step is to establish your intention. Think about the energy you want to surround yourself with and what you want to create and cultivate in your space. Whether it’s yoga-level calm or Norman-style motivation (sorry, I had to), the possibilities are endless.

When you are ready, light the sage. Just be sure to put out the flame when the wraps start to burn. You are looking for constant smoldering, not fire.

“In theory, if you increase your awareness of what you are doing, especially by engaging your senses, you can reduce stress – so something like smudging really does,” says Christopher Willard, PsyD, author of Raising Resilience .

Overall, there has been insufficient research into the use of sage for its proposed mental health benefits. However, based on preliminary research, there may be support for the use of sage for mood and memory.

A Word From Verywell

Burning Sage has a long history and can be helpful in starting a spiritual practice or making another life change. This can be helpful if you are struggling with the transition or starting positive changes in your home or physical health.

However, if you live with symptoms of severe mood problems or clinical anxiety, it is unlikely that burning sage will help. It’s important to check with your doctor in addition to engaging in complementary health practice, such as smoking or consuming sage.

In this case, burning sage can be a blessing for people with asthma, allergies, bronchitis, and other respiratory diseases. But inhaling smoke while smudging can worsen any respiratory condition. Wait for the smoke to disappear before entering the room.

Be Prepared

When you’re getting ready to rock your space, having the right instruments makes a huge difference. “Traditionally, Native Americans contain four elements: sage (earth), a lighter or matches (fire), a phonograph shell (water), and a feather (air),” explains D’Avilla. The shell of the abalone is used to hold the sage stick underneath a stick and store its ash, while the quill is used to spread the smoke all over the space. The sage and any other herb are placed in the earbuds, ignited, and the quill is used to lift the smoke all over the space. At least you’ll need some sage and a lighter. If you do not have a shell or a feather, you can use any fireproof vessel and fan hands.

People often wonder where to start when sage smears over your homes, and an expert recommends starting with any space that is negative for you. “Every spiritual act is a personal practice,” says D’Avilla. “I recommend connecting with your intuition and working with what resonates with you. You can open a window to let out negative energy. You can work outside the space, around doors and windows, and then move inside the room. Fan the flame to keep the smoke moving. You can set your intentions silently or verbally to remove any negative energy from the space and let the light in.”

Set Your Intentions

When sage blur your space, it’s important to set positive intentions to bring good vibes into your life. “Everything you work on in your own life is a good start,” says D’Avilla. An example would be: “Clear this space of all negative energy. Fill this space with light and love. ” Re-feel what you like. Use your intuition and have fun! ” Try to attract love or let go of your fears or negative emotions. Concentrate on what you want to attract and what you want to let go of.

Just as you don’t have to smoke a whole stick of sage, you also don’t have to spend hours doing this ritual. In fact, in some cases, a few minutes are all it takes. “When you connect with your intuition, you will understand how much space space needs,” explains D’Avilla. “It also depends on the size of your space. It may take a few minutes, but if you add any other rituals to the practice, it may take longer. ” Do what feels natural to you and stop when you feel negative energy has left your space.
