Perhaps the best and easiest way to use Hangouts is to use the app. It’s available for Android and iOS and you don’t need to worry about peripherals as your smartphone has a built-in camera and microphone.

Exclusive: Inside Hangouts, Google’s big fix for its messaging mess

Paratroopers wearing futuristic glasses broadcast live their descent to the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco during last year’s Google I / O. Developers lined up to receive not one but four free devices costing $ 300 or more. Google announced the Nexus Q, an exercise in overproduced gadgets designed to stream music to your home theater system.

Away from the show, during a silent “fireplace chat” for a product that was not receiving any major updates, Google admitted it had a serious messaging problem – or rather a problem with the messaging app. When asked about Google’s fragmented communication tools, Real-Time Communications Director Nikhyl Singhal replied quickly and honestly, as if he were preparing for the question.

“I think we did an incredibly poor job serving our users here.”

He did not say that Google has already been working on a solution for a year, and that the results of these efforts are still in a year. Since then, Google’s split message history has become Google’s historic news with apps as diverse as iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger gaining both spotlight and market share.

But today the wait is over as Google introduces a new messaging platform it calls Hangouts. It includes Android, iOS, Chrome, and Gmail. It is a combination of Google’s strengths in the field of cloud computing, search and mobile devices.

It’s also late to play.

The history of cracked development and the eventual launch of Google Hangouts reveals a lot about how a company is transforming from a place where small projects are initiated randomly to one that is forced to organize and coordinate different products. In the new “One Google”, large projects require deep collaboration between multiple teams. Hangouts is about more than just the way Google accepts SMS. It can be a staple product that sits alongside Search, Gmail, and Docs, acting as a key part of Google’s suite of services. Here’s how it happened and why it took so long.

A history of Hangouts

Once upon a time, Google was the leader in the messaging game. In 2005, the company launched Talk, essentially the best experience in the hottest category at the time: instant messaging. A new category of mobile messaging has since appeared: constant chat with multimedia attachments such as voice memos, read receipts, and group chats. BlackBerry Messenger prompted millions to buy BlackBerry, and in recent years, small startups like WhatsApp and established gamers like Facebook have grown to process billions of messages a day. In April of this year, people were sending more messages using the chat app than SMS, while Google sat on the sidelines with the rarely used Google+ Messenger app.

Instead, Google spent its time building mobile apps like Gmail, Google Now, Google Drive, and Google+, which allowed the early advantage to evaporate. As Singhal put it: “When we started looking at the project we did, and in hindsight it seems obvious, we built a lot of communication products on Google with no smartphones, no social networks in people’s lives.”

For example, Talk was created to help corporate users communicate better, says Singhal. “The idea of creating something that is community-based and always available was not the same charter we established when we made Talk.” In the case of Hangouts, Singhal says Google had to make the difficult decision to abandon the very “open” XMPP standard that helped the pioneer.

Google’s lack of a unified messaging platform became something of a mystery as it seemed Google had all the necessary components. “There was a lot of code that, from a high-level point of view, if we were to just crunch it together, [in theory] it should turn into one product,” says Singhal. Messaging was neither consistent nor standardized, and it wasn’t even easy to use. Google+ Messenger, the real-time messaging platform that was launched last year, was the first item but only existed on Google+. The discussion was different, but it was based on an old standard before the advent of cloud computing. Third place was taken by Hangouts, a real-time video chat service embedded in Google+. Gmail had its own real-time communication team.

Ben Eidelson, Nikhyl Singhal, Kate Cushing, and Randall Sarafa

While Google Talk seemed like a good foundation for a messaging app, Google decided it needed to start from scratch. “We had to basically rebuild everything,” says Singhal. To create Hangouts from the guts of dozens of island communications products, Google had to recruit engineers from across the company – many of them working separately on this very problem. From the outside, the company looked like a crystal palace of servers and engineers, but inside, the same engineers weren’t working together, especially messaging. “The funny thing is that most of them have actually tried to build this unified product themselves,” says Singhal, but no one else could have done it.

The breakthrough came with Google+, which proved that Google can – and should – organize an entire company to implement one idea. Years of work have shown that this basic product cannot be created by just one team or a handful of engineers working 20 percent of the time. “We started putting together a band about two years ago,” says Singhal. “It’s like The Avengers – we had to combine different styles and different cultures [from all over Google].” Today’s Hangouts team is a combination of these elements, a new backbone that ties together the real-time infrastructure that will fuel the new era of Google. As with Google+, Singhal explains that the difficulty with messaging was “to integrate, aggregate and validate these different systems together.”

How to get the best call quality for your bandwidth

Google Hangouts video settings

Select SD video quality to save bandwidth

Hangouts may not come with filters or fancy backgrounds to help you shed light on you, but you can still look and sound your best during an important video call. Keep in mind that using video uses more bandwidth than chatting via text, so if you have a slower internet connection you’ll want to lower some settings to save valuable bandwidth.

Step 1: Hover over the connection window until the connection lights start to appear at the top.

Step 2: Click the gear icon or Settings option.

Step 3: A popup will appear. At the top, click the Bandwidth tab.

Step 4: Depending on your camera and internet settings, you’ll want to choose a lower resolution for both your outgoing video – that is, your own video that’s being captured by Hangouts – and incoming video – or the videos of other participants in your call. Choosing a higher bandwidth, for example choosing HD quality over standard definition (SD), will result in a clearer picture, but if you have a slower connection you can get dropped frames, stuttering video, and even choppy audio.

While choosing a lower video resolution may make your channel appear more pixelated, it can help to maintain a smoother audio experience. That way, if you have a weak or slow connection, videoconference participants will still hear you even if your video feed is a bit grainy.

Google Hangouts is a free chat, voice chat, and video calling service. Moreover, it is quite simple to use. All you need to get started is a Google account. Before we talk about how to use Google Hangouts, let’s talk about what it actually is.

What is Google Hangouts?

Hangouts were originally a Google+ feature long before the social network collapsed. Google finally launched the standalone Hangouts app in May 2013. Since then, the app has gained (and lost) a few features. Unfortunately, the Hangouts brand has split into a somewhat confusing set of communication tools over time. Apps now include Chat, Google Meet, and Dialer.

The classic version of Google Hangouts allows users to chat individually or in groups of up to 150 people. They can also make video calls with other people or in groups of up to 10 people. On the other hand, users of a corporate Google account can make video calls in groups of up to 25 people.

The rest of the apps in the Hangouts ecosystem are targeted at Google Voice subscribers and G Suite users. If you have a Voice account, Hangouts users can call anyone worldwide for free using the Dialer app.

If you have a G Suite account, you can also use Hangouts Chat and Meet. Chat offers a similar experience to Slack thanks to the built-in Google search function and the integration of Google Docs, Slides and Sheets. Meet touts similar video chat features to the classic Hangouts version, but with a more extensive feature set. This includes support for video and audio meetings with up to 250 users and the integration of Google Calendar for details and meeting schedule.

Google is likely to eventually phase out Hangouts and move free users to Meet and Chat without needing G Suite accounts. Until then, the standard Hangouts app is available to everyone. It is also available online and has a Google Chrome extension.

After logging into your chosen account, you can now start sending messages and video chat.

How to start a new call or video call

  • Tap the green and white “+” button in the lower right corner of the app and select New Call or New Video Call.
  • You can then enter the name, email address, or phone number of an existing Hangouts user to start a text or video call.
    • If you start a new conversation with someone who is not already using Hangouts by entering their email address or phone number, they will be sent an invitation to use the service.
    • If you have a corporate account, you can video chat with up to 24 other people.
    • You can share a link to an ongoing video call. If you share this link with someone and click it, that person can join the video call by simply logging into their Gmail account.

After starting an individual or group conversation, you will be able to finish the conversation by selecting a conversation on the main page of the application.
