What Is Remote Play Anywhere?

Remote Play Anywhere is a Steam feature that allows users to stream Steam games from their computer to other devices, including connected smart TVs and even tablets and phones. This feature not only transmits video from the laptop, but also optimizes games for the screen and various controllers and user interfaces.

When streaming Steam games to your TV, the main result comes from the display quality. Simply streaming video from your PC to your TV is possible without Play Anywhere, but that’s not pretty or requires tedious adjustments to the settings to try and get the correct aspect ratio.

When streaming Steam games to a mobile device, the main advantage is that you store the games on Steam and stream them to your device. In this way, a single Steam Link application can replace any number of individual gaming applications taking up space on your device.

How to Access and Use Remote Play Anywhere

To access and use Remote Play Anywhere, you need a Steam account on your main computer. You’ll also need the free 21.5MB Steam Link app for any mobile device you’d like to link to your account.

After downloading the app, open Steam Link on your devices. Choose an input method and you will receive a verification number on your device.

Then log into your Steam account on your computer. Click Steam in the top left corner and select Settings from the menu. In the column menu on the left side of the new window that opens, select Remote Play. In this menu, select PAIR STEAM LINK and enter the verification number displayed on the device you want to pair.

After you finish pairing the devices, select the Start Play icon on the connected device. You need to turn on your computer and start it up, install Steam, and log into your account, but your computer does not need to be running Steam to access the library.

Run Steam on a Chromebook via Steam Link (Easiest method)

The fastest way to get Steam running on a Chromebook is to use the Steam Link Android app. Unfortunately, this method requires your Steam PC to be on the same network as your Chromebook. The Steam Link app can stream Steam games to any mobile device, including your Chromebook, if it supports Android apps.

This is clearly a limiting method as you cannot take your game experience with you when you travel. However, if you just want to play the usual couch games on a thin and light Chromebook, this might do the trick. To use SteamLink on your Chromebook, follow these short steps.

• Open the Google Play Store and install Steam Link.
• Connect your Chromebook to the same network as the other computer and use the same Steam account.
• Open the Steam Link app and log in to your Steam account.
• Pair your Steam compatible controller (or use the keyboard with some games).
• Connect to the local computer.
• It’s ready to stream games to Chrome OS.

This method also requires you to have another computer, which is certainly not the case for every Chromebook user. Still, setup takes less than two minutes if you have the required hardware. In addition, it is the only simple method that is practical for ARM-based Chromebooks.

Run Steam on a Chromebook via Linux apps

For those of you who don’t have a secondary Chromebook streaming PC at home, you can still run Steam using Linux app support. This method only works on non-ARM-based Chromebooks. This includes all popular Intel Chromebooks.

First, you’ll need to enable Linux applications on your Chromebook. To do so, follow these quick steps:

• Open Chrome OS settings (by clicking the time area in the lower-right corner of the desktop and then clicking the gear-shaped Settings icon).
• Click the Advanced tab and select Developers.
• Enable the Linux (Beta) option shown in the menu below. Currently, Linux is in beta testing on Chrome OS (as it has for the last three years), but Google says it will be leaving the beta soon.

• Follow the on-screen instructions to install Linux on your Chromebook. During the installation process you will choose a username for the Linux environment. Username can be anything you want, so don’t worry too much about it. You’ll also need to decide how much of your available memory to allocate to Linux, but you can change that later. The installation will take a few minutes, so a little patience is needed at this stage.
• After the installation is complete, you will see a terminal window like the one below. Now you are ready to download and install some Linux applications.

Now you can download Steam to your Chrome OS device. Make sure to use the appropriate instruction set below for ARM-based or non-ARM devices.

Steps to install Steam for non-ARM Chromebooks

Thanks to the Borealis project between Valve and Google, there is an easy way to install Steam on Intel Chromebooks. You’ll need to enable a valid Chrome flag to get started. The pointer lock flag in Chrome allows you to lock the cursor to the edges of the screen so you can navigate properly while gaming on your Chromebook. To enable this flag, simply copy and paste the URL below into Chrome and hit Enter, then enable the flag.

Now we’re ready to install Steam. Using this installer script will install Steam as well as any other libraries needed to run properly on your Chromebook. To download and run the installer, open a Linux terminal. You can find it in the Chrome OS application launcher called “Terminal”.

Paste the command below. This is done by highlighting the entire code, right-clicking and clicking on a copy. To paste it into the terminal, right-click (with 2 finger on the touchpad) anywhere inside the terminal and the code will be pasted. Note that traditional copy and paste shortcuts do not work properly in Terminal.

How to Use Proton for Steam

Open Steam and after logging in, find the game you want to play in your library.

Tip: Make sure the Penguin icon at the top of the library list is not active. This sorts games that are not native to Linux.

The Install button on the game’s page will likely be greyed out and not clickable.

Do not worry. We’re about to turn that into a nice, clickable blue button.

On the right side of the game, click the “Settings” button (the gear icon). In the drop-down menu that appears, select “Properties.”

In the Properties window, click the Compatibility tab. You should find one option available: “Force the use of a specific Steam Play Compatibility Tool”. Check the box next to it.

Make sure the drop-down menu that appears is set to the highest Proton version available. Then go ahead and exit the Properties window.

The “Available for Windows” message should disappear and the “Install” button on the game page should now be blue and clickable. Click on it to open the installation window.

Select your shortcut preferences here. You will get an estimated amount of disk space and required download time. Leave the installation location as is, and then click “Next.

The game will start downloading with the Proton version you selected. Once both have been downloaded and installed, you can start the game by clicking “Play.”

The first time you launch Steam, it may take a few minutes to set up before playing. Be patient here.

Once you’ve started the game, don’t get discouraged if you run into problems at first. On Windows, games don’t always run right out of the box, so you may need to make some changes to your game settings. If that doesn’t work, or you can’t access your in-game settings, consider using the recommended launch parameter or a different version of Proton, as we’ll explain below.

Using Launch Parameters

Some reports you read in ProtonDB will tell you to use specific startup parameters (also called startup options). They’ll be strings of words and characters that look something like this:

These parameters tell Steam that you want to activate, deactivate, or adjust certain settings at startup. Sometimes they will fix problems or improve performance. However, be careful as they can always cause more problems.

To get started, reopen your game’s Properties window on Steam.

On the first tab that opens, the General tab, look for the “Startup Options” section. There you will find a text box where you can type or copy and paste specific startup parameters.

After entering the parameters, exit the Properties window and try to start the game.

If you’re still having problems (or have new ones), just open Properties again and remove the startup parameters. Try looking for other parameter recommendations in ProtonDB. If you want to self-diagnose, Steam Support provides a guide to frequently used parameters.

When Proton was first announced as part of the Steam Play project, there were a modest 27 games with official Proton support. The number has grown exponentially since then, with Valve continually developing and refining Proton to suit more games.

Create a Steam Shelf

Shelves are alternative ways to browse your game library. By clicking Add Shelf> Select Shelf, you can turn any collection into a horizontally scrolling shelf. There are also some default non-collection options, including All Games and Friends Recent Activity.

Sometimes the games you want to play are simply not listed in the Steam store. For example, suppose Star Wars: Battlefront II is on your wish list for some strange reason. Battlefront II is only available for purchase from the Electronic Arts’ Origin Store (for PC), so you’ll need to buy it direct from the company players love to hate.

You download it, enjoy waving a few lightsabers, and pray that the loot boxes never come back. But, unfortunately, you don’t like the idea of ​​having two separate clients to run your games. Valve has a cure for it.

Steam is one of the most popular gaming clients for PC gamers, with a monumental catalog of games ready to buy and play. A recent but not entirely new feature of the client was Steam Remote Play, a tool that allows you to play games on multiple devices by streaming from your computer.

This feature also allows you to play with your friends, while one player streams the game to another’s screen, you can both play the title and enjoy any available co-op action without leaving your home. Today we’re going to show you how to use Steam Remote Play with easy-to-follow steps.

What Is Steam Remote Play?

Steam Remote Play allows you to run games from one computer while playing from another device that is fully connected to Steam. With this feature, you can remotely invite friends to co-op missions without them having to own that specific game.

Steam Remote Play works by connecting you to a game on your device while the actual game is running on another computer elsewhere. Audio and video material is remotely captured and sent to the device, and keyboard and mouse input is sent in a similar manner.

Basically, this means that you don’t need to play on a device that has the required specs, as long as the device that the game is running on can do so. For example, a graphically intense game can be streamed to your “work only” laptop, meaning you don’t have to play every game at your desk.

However, you shouldn’t always trust the Linux runtime. Sometimes game developers aren’t able to spend a lot of time just to make sure the Linux version is working well. You may be better off with the Windows version that comes with Proton. Experiment to find out.

How to Get Started

In-home streaming is simple to use and doesn’t require any complicated setup – or any setup, really. First, log into Steam on your Windows PC. Ideally, it should be a powerful gaming PC with a powerful processor and fast graphics hardware. Install the games you want to stream if you haven’t already – you’ll be streaming from your computer, not Valve’s servers.

(Valve will eventually allow game streaming from Mac OS X, Linux, and Steam OS, but this feature is not yet available. You can still stream games to these other operating systems.)

Then log into Steam on another computer on the same network with the same Steam username. Both computers must be on the same subnet of the same local network.

You will see the games installed on the other computer in the Steam client library. Click the Stream button to start streaming the game from the other computer. The game will launch on your host computer and send audio and video to the computer in front of you. Your client input will be bounced back to the server.

Make sure to update Steam on both computers if you don’t see this feature. Use Steam> Check for Updates in Steam and install the latest update. Updating to the latest graphics drivers for your computer hardware is also always a good idea.

Improving Performance

Here’s what Valve recommends for good streaming performance:

• Host PC: At least quad-core CPU of the PC running the game. The computer needs sufficient CPU power to run the game, compress the video and audio, and send them over the network with low latency.
• Streaming Client: GPU that supports H.264 hardware accelerated decoding on the client computer. This hardware is available in all the latest laptops and PCs. If you have an older computer or netbook, it may not be able to decode the video stream quickly enough.
• Network equipment: A wired network connection is ideal. You may be successful on wireless N or AC networks with good signals, but this is not guaranteed.
• Game Settings: While streaming a game, go to the Game Settings screen and lower the resolution or disable vertical sync for faster performance.
• Home Pairing Settings: On the host computer, click Steam> Settings and select Home Streaming to view the home streaming settings. You can modify your streaming settings to improve performance and reduce latency. You can experiment with the options here and see how they affect performance – they should be obvious.

You can also try streaming games from outside of Steam. Click Games> Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library on the host computer and add a PC game installed elsewhere on the system. Then you can try streaming it from the client computer. Valve says this “may work but is not officially supported.”
