How to Set up the Steam Link App to Work over the Internet

When Valve announced the Steam Link app, I was incredibly happy – I will finally be able to play my PC games wherever I want… But when it was launched it came with a caveat:

The Steam Link app brings PC games to your Android device. Just pair a Bluetooth controller or Steam Controller with your device, connect to a Steam PC on the same local network, and start playing your existing Steam games.

Similarly. Local. Network.

However, I am not a man who ignores limitations. With a bit of googling, I was able to set up the Steam Link app to work over the internet. This is what I did.

Disclaimer: This is not supported by Valve and will require you to play around with IP addresses and port forwarding. While I find it fairly simple, it may not be easy – but what do you have to lose?

What you will need:

• Steam configured on your gaming PC (which I assume is running on Windows).
• Some games installed on said computer.
• Android Cell Phone – Sorry to iPhone fans, Apple has declined the Steam Link app at the time of writing this guide.
• Steam Link application installed on the mentioned phone.
• Some kind of controller (I’m using the Steam Controller via Bluetooth – if you want to do the same, you’ll need to update the Steam Controller firmware to the latest version to enable Bluetooth).
• Fast mobile connection.

This step requires that the phone and the computer are on the same local network. The easiest way to do this is when you are at home and sitting in front of your computer.

1. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and the controller is paired with your phone.
2. Open the Steam Link application – it will start scanning for computers running Steam.
3. Tap your computer and you will see a PIN to enter on that computer.
4. Enter the PIN code on your computer – the phone will verify the connection and you will be ready to play!

Most games work with Steam Link, from the most popular Steam games to the most unknown. If you don’t have a large Steam account or computer, you can also use your Android phone to stream games to your Xbox thanks to the wonders of cloud gaming.

Configure Controls for Non-Steam Games

While Steam’s compatibility with various gamepads means it can handle automatic control mapping quite well, things can get a little more complicated with non-Steam games – especially older games that don’t have native controller compatibility.

To configure the keyboard and mouse to use a gamepad, open the game through Steam Link, press the Xbox or PS button to bring up the Steam menu, and then select “Controller Configuration”.

Here you can bind different keyboard keys to gamepad buttons. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, but you can do anything from setting custom keys to the sensitivity of using the analog stick as a mouse.

To help you out, we recommend going to the game’s hotkeys page first so you can quickly see which key is doing this by pressing the PS / Xbox button before going back to your controller setup.

Stream Emulated Games on Steam Link

Unfortunately, the previous tip won’t help if you’re trying to play your favorite old school games with an emulator, as Steam Link won’t identify your controller when you try to use them (i.e. Steam Link only recognizes your controller as a Big Picture UI game controller).

Streaming emulated games is a bit more complicated as you have to configure the parsers with an excellent tool called Steam Rom Manager. If you want to do this, check out our dedicated guide on streaming emulated N64, PS1, SNES, and more games via the Steam link.

Otherwise, you can use the Apple Approved MFi Controller for iPhone for iPhone or iPad. Android users can even use a wired controller like the old Xbox 360 model by plugging it into a USB OTG cable (Micro USB or USB-C) and plugging it into the device.

Step 3: Establish a Connection

Now go back to your phone, open the Steam Link app and select “Get Started”, then you’ll be prompted to pair the controller with your phone. Ideally, you should pair a wired or wireless controller as the touch controls will overlap the image (like most mobile games), picking up the game’s visuals. Select “Pair Steam Controller” or “Pair Other Controllers” and follow the instructions.

While not all games support controllers, there is a growing library that supports it. However, none of them are touchscreen adapted, so navigation will be a bit winding. During my tests, I used the Razer Raiju Mobile, which is perfect for controller-enabled games.

When you connect your controller (or select touch controls), Steam Link will automatically scan your network for a computer running Steam. If it finds your computer, it will give you a four-digit PIN that you must enter on your computer.

If Steam Link cannot find your computer, select “Other Computers” for your four-digit PIN. On your computer, select Steam (top left corner of the screen), select “Settings” from the drop-down menu, and then select “Remote Play”. Select “Pair Steam Link” and enter the PIN.

Once done correctly, the phone will now display your computer name. Select your computer to connect. Steam Link will then perform a network test to see how strong (or weak) your connection is. Once the test is complete, Steam Link will let you know your bandwidth in a popup. Select “OK” and Steam Link will take you to its home page.

Step 4: Enjoy Your Games on the Go

Select “Start Playing” from the Steam Link home page. This will open Steam on your PC in big picture mode for easier navigation. Select your library to find the games you own and want to play. Go to the game you want to play, select “Play” and enjoy your Steam library from anywhere.

How to play Steam games on Android

If you want to get set up as soon as possible and don’t mind dealing with minor obstacles, here’s how to play Steam games on Android:

1. Download the Steam Link app to your Android device and make sure your PC is turned on and Steam is running.
2. Complete the setup and connect your computer to Steam Link using the code provided.
3. Pair the controller with your Android device via cable or via Bluetooth.
4. Open the Steam Link app and run the Network Test (found in the Settings menu).
5. Select Start Playing.

While the steps above will get you started playing Steam games for Android, there are a few other things you should know about using Steam Link.

How to play Steam games on Android in-depth

Before delving into the topic, remember that Steam Link simply streams games from your computer. To stream games to your phone, you must have a computer running on Steam. The game actually renders on your PC, so you can’t stream games that your host PC can’t run.

Make sure your host computer is turned on and running Steam. Then go to the Google Play Store on your Android device and download the Steam Link app. Launch the app after installing it, choose if you want to pair the Steam Controller or another controller, and complete the pairing process.

The app will guide you through the pairing process if you are using an official Steam controller. Otherwise, you need to refer to your controller user manual for detailed pairing instructions. Note that in most cases, you just need to turn on Bluetooth on both devices to enter pairing mode.

Once the controller is properly connected, select your computer from the list of available options on the next screen, which will display important information about your network. You also need to authorize your device. The Steam Link app will provide a code after running the connection test. Connect this code to the Steam application on your computer to authenticate your device.

Tap Start a Game on the left side when you’re satisfied with the connection and navigate to your Steam Library using the toolbar at the top of the result page. Once you’ve decided which game you want to play, the streaming and gameplay process begins by selecting Play .

Streaming such a game works best when your computer and Android device share the same network. It used to be a Steam Link requirement. Thanks to the innovations of Steam Link Anywhere in 2019, Steam Link allows you to stream games to the operating system from the selected network, even if each device is connected to a different network.

To stream a game from your computer to another operating system, you must be running Steam on your computer. If you don’t want to turn on your computer every time you want to play, you can turn on your computer remotely using the Wake on LAN (WoL) feature. Steam Link will allow you to use WoL, so if your computer accepts WoL commands, you can use the app to turn on your computer no matter where you are.

Before delving into the topic, remember that Steam Link simply streams games from your computer. To stream games to your phone, you must have a computer running on Steam. The game actually renders on your PC, so you can’t stream games that your host PC can’t run.

What If Steam Remote Play Isn’t Working?

Steam Remote Play requires different devices to run in tandem and you may run into some issues. There are a few things you may want to try before abandoning the entire venture.

1. Make sure Steam or the Steam Link app is up-to-date on all devices you use, including the computer with the game installed.

1. Check that the game you want to stream and play supports Remote Play.

1. For specific issues, try posting your queries on the Steam message boards to see if someone can offer a solution.
2. Make sure everyone has a good internet connection, especially the computer hosting the game. Besides fast download, you will also need fast upload speed. Ideally, the symmetrical upload and download speeds should be 25 Mbps or higher.

Using Steam Remote Play

When you start remote play, this is a great service that usually runs very smoothly and allows you to play games on devices not dedicated to certain games.

I recommend starting with Steam Link. In my testing it was a smooth experience with most games, although a few had quirks (like black screen). If you run into any problems or missing features, please try Moonlight or AMD Link. Graphics and streaming were comparable in my tests, but this will depend a lot on your device and network quality.

Games to Stream

When you click Connect, your phone or tablet will display a list of games ready for streaming. If you tap on one, it should start playing right on your device – with full gamepad support, if you have compatible or paired.

If you don’t see the game you’re looking for, open GeForce Experience on your computer, click the Settings gear in the upper-right corner, and then click the Shield tab in the sidebar. Click the Add button to manually add the game to GeForce Experience, which should appear in Moonlight after restarting. You can even customize the name and art by clicking Edit in GeForce Experience if you want everything to look nice.

Tweak Moonlight Settings

That’s all it usually takes to get started, but if you want the best possible experience, you’ll probably want to tweak a few settings.

From the main Moonlight screen, tap the Settings link on the left (for iOS) or the gear icon at the top (for Android). Moonlight has many more settings on Android than iOS, but most users should at least adjust the target resolution and frame rate: 1080p @ 60Hz is perfect for the best graphics and smooth playback, but if the stream is unstable it can cut it down to 720p or 30 Hz Support.

I also recommend tweaking the screen controls that you see. Not all gamepads will have L3 and R3 buttons, so setting the on-screen controls to “Auto” (iOS) or “Show L3 and R3 only” (Android) will only provide touch buttons for these functions.

It’s worth noting that the streaming technology is still pretty new and won’t be perfect. You can get better results by reducing network congestion, so tell your roommate to stop watching Netflix while you’re trying to stream games.

Here and there a pop sound may appear and the graphics will be a bit more blurry than if you were playing it on the computer itself. But it’s hard to beat playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider from the couch without having to fight for the TV.

If you encounter any other problems while streaming, there may be a solution – for example turning off your firewall or adjusting some other Android settings.
