How to Watch F1 From Germany in 2022 (Tested and Works!)

After RTL lost its F1 broadcast rights, it became impossible to find a good spot to watch the event. But I was determined not to miss it this year, so I discovered it was available on Sling TV – the US-only streaming platform. I wasn’t going to let this stop me so I did a lot of testing and after a lot of trial and error finally found a way to unlock F1.

The best way to watch F1 from Germany is with a VPN. It works by masking your real location and IP address and assigning you a new one from the country you are connecting to. So, when you connect to a US server, Sling TV allows you to access and watch its content.

After testing over 30 VPNs, my top recommendation is ExpressVPN. It has multiple servers all over the US, so you can easily unblock Sling TV from anywhere. Plus, you can try it risk-free before you make up your mind. If you don’t like it, you have 30 days to request a refund.

Quick Guide: How to Watch F1 From Germany in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Get a VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN because its fast speeds ensure buffering-free streaming.
  2. Connect to a US server. Sling TV is only available in the US, so that’s where you need to connect.
  3. Start watching F1 from Germany! Go to Sling TV and hit the play button!

Due to transmission limitations, streaming platforms are required to geo-block their content. Recently it happened with RTL and now it is no longer available in Germany. The same goes for Sling TV, which is only available in the US. So, in order to watch F1, you need a VPN to bypass geographic restrictions.

VPNs mask your real IP address and assign it from a licensed country. It’s an easy way to deal with geoblocks and censorship no matter where you are. When you connect to the United States, Sling TV believes you are there and allows you to access all the content.

With a VPN, you can bypass Sling TV geoblocks and watch F1 from Germany. All you need to do is connect to a US server and hit the play button.

Just check ESPN’s schedule ahead of Grand Prix dates to see exactly when to tune in and when other broadcasts are scheduled.

However, if none of the services listed above are available in your country, you’ll need to download a good VPN first. Here’s a short list of the most popular Formula 1 platforms and VPNs that will unblock them:

  • ESPN. Reserved exclusively for an American audience, this sports channel is easily accessible using NordVPN, check out our snapshot guide on how to watch ESPN online.
  • Hulu + Live TV. It’s a hard-to-unlock streaming platform and is only available in the United States. Fortunately, VyprVPN is able to do the job well. If Hulu isn’t also available in your region, check out our list of the best Hulu VPNs.
  • TV scarf. Only available to US users but can be unblocked with a VPN. Here’s our guide on how to access Sling with a VPN.
  • YouTube TV. Virtually any VPN can help you access YouTube TV. You can just use Surfshark, an inexpensive VPN that will also help you unblock many other streaming services (such as DAZN).

Except for VyprVPN, all other F1 VPN options come with a one-week free trial. But of course there are 23 races in the season. So, if you want to watch the entire Formula 1 season 2021, you’ll need to get hold of one of these providers.

Of course, there are websites that illegally broadcast F1 races for free. But they usually ask for personal information in return, so choosing one of these sites is not a safe option.

Top 3 VPN services for streaming F1

  • NordVPN – The Best VPN for Watching Formula 1
  • Surfshark – Great, cheap VPN for Grand Prix
  • VyprVPN – A good VPN for all types of streaming

Choosing a reliable VPN is essential if you want to watch Formula 1 without buffering from anywhere. Must be fast and have a global server fleet as well as the ability to avoid geo-blocking. Below are our recommended VPN providers that can do it all.

1. NordVPN – the best option for F1 2021

Based on: Panama
Concurrent connections: 6
Servers / Countries: over 5,500 servers in 59 countries
Unblocks Netflix: Yes

Already mentioned above, NordVPN is arguably the fastest service with an impressive list of over 5,200 servers in 59 countries. NordLynx’s internal tunneling protocol should also be considered. With NordVPN, you’ll be able to stream Formula 1 in high-quality video from most countries.

Plus, this provider is great at geo-blocking. If you want to watch the broadcast from outside, all you need to do is select the appropriate country. Connect with the United States and enjoy the race in ESPN.

NordVPN has a 7-day free trial for Android that actually works on all devices. Besides, you can take advantage of the 30-day money-back guarantee. All pricing plans include six simultaneous connections.

For more NordVPN features, see our NordVPN review.

  • Unblocks multiple streaming sites
  • Smart DNS function
  • Decent price
  • Huge number of servers
  • Lots of features
  • WireGuard protocol

2. Surfshark – fast and cheap Formula 1 VPN

Based on: British Virgin Islands

Servers / Countries: over 3200 servers in 65 countries
Unblocks Netflix: Yes

Another great option for streaming F1 live online is Surfshark. It is known for its exceptional performance, which comes from having over 3,200 servers in 65 countries. Moreover, this provider uses the next generation WireGuard tunneling protocol, known for its speed and security.

Surfshark unblocks streaming services from all over the world with ease. And we’re not just talking about the F1 channels. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney + and other content platforms will also be available. Expect to watch Formula 1 in HD or even UHD (4K) quality, provided your internet connection is decent.

There is a 7-day free trial for each Surfshark plan, which should be enough to see if you want to get one for your next Grand Prix. In addition, there is a 30-day money-back guarantee and no limit on connected devices. The latter means you can share your account with family and friends.

F1 is available on several sites that have a live TV option. However, most of them are only available from the US, so you’ll need to find a reliable VPN with a large US server network.

Watch F1 on YouTube TV

YouTube TV is the second largest streaming service in the United States. If you pair YouTube TV with Hulu, you’ll find that both have a competitive channel list with a fair amount of overlap. But YouTube TV has a few channels that Hulu doesn’t have. (They both have ESPN, of course.)

YouTube TV costs $ 64.99 per month (the same as Hulu with live TV) and also offers a range of premium add-ons. After signing up, you’ll also get a seven-day YouTube free trial. YouTube TV should also have your local channels. (You can check it by entering your zip code here.)

And YouTube TV is available from every major streaming service. So you can watch YouTube TV on Roku and YouTube TV on Amazon Fire TV. You can also watch it on Android TV and Google TV, on Apple TV, and on the web. Since you get ESPN, you’ll also be able to stream F1 via YouTube TV.

How to watch F1 on Sling TV

Sling TV is still a great option for watching F1 Grand Prix races. It is also one of the most economical as it is as close as possible to having a truly customizable TV.

ESPN is included in the Sling Orange plan, which costs only $ 35 a month. From there, you can build stuff with Sling Orange addons to really customize your very own streaming package.

If you want even more channels, you can purchase both the Sling Orange and Sling Blue plans for $ 50 a month, sharing each channel on both plans.

Sling has a few local channels which is good but it depends on the region. (Here you can make sure it has what you want.)

We should mention that you also get unlimited cloud DVR disk space and have some customization options like premium channels and add-ons. For more information, read our YouTube TV review.

How to watch Formula 1 streams free on Kodi with a VPN

You can bypass Formula 1 content blocks abroad by using a VPN. Follow the steps below to watch a Formula 1 GP via Kodi from anywhere in the world.

Here’s how to watch F1 broadcasts on Kodi from anywhere:

  1. First, sign up for a VPN of your choice. We recommend IPVanish for Kodi users, although NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN are comparable alternatives.
  2. Download the VPN app on the streaming device you want (make sure it has the app for that device)
  3. Connect to a VPN server in a country where Formula 1 streaming is available. For example, if you are watching the free-to-air network Ten from Australia, the Australian server can help you bypass geographic content restrictions
  4. Try visiting the site or service of your choice, or streaming through the desired Kodi add-on. It should load almost immediately

We strongly recommend that you follow the steps above well in advance of any GP you want to watch. Testing the options in advance can help you avoid missing out on racing action.

Formula 1 racing broadcast rights are complex. You won’t be able to watch every country’s Grand Prix through Kodi. This list covers the best free or paid channel options available through various Kodi add-ons.

Formula 1 Kodi Kodi addon

Formula 1 2020 Kodi Add-on

The Formula 1 Kodi add-on was released in late February 2020 and may still contain a few bugs. However, accessing free movies on the official Formula 1 website works great. Currently, this add-on doesn’t have an account login option, so if you subscribe to a Formula 1 streaming service, you’ll need to select your web browser version or available apps for mobile or streaming devices.

Here’s how to install the Formula 1 Kodi add-on:

  • Click here to install the Formula 1 add-in zip file
  • In Kodi, go to Addons
  • Click the package symbol
  • Select Install from zip
  • Find the download folder and click the plugin.video.formula1 zip file to install it

The add-on will be available in the Video Extras section.

Zattoo Box Kodi addon

The Zattoo Box Kodi add-on allows you to connect to your Zattoo account without a web browser. It also avoids Zattoo ads (there will still be ads from the channels themselves). To install it, load up Kodi, then click Addons → Download → Video Add-ons → Zattoo Box. An information screen for Zattoo Box will open. Click Install to complete the installation.

When you use Zattoo Box for the first time, right-click on the add-on and click on settings. Enter your Zattoo username and password in the appropriate fields. Click OK then open to go to the main menu. You can access the Channel 4 stream from LiveTV – All Channels Menu.

Sling TV addon

Sling TV kodi forumula 1

Available on Kodi from 2019, Sling TV Kodi is a great option due to cheap access to ESPN for F1 racing fans. In the US, Formula 1 is broadcast on ESPN, making Sling TV one of the cheapest ESPN online viewing options. You can buy a Sling TV for $ 35 a month, although the service often offers discounts. A 3-day free trial is also available.

Is F1TV Pro available in Australia? No, only F1TV Access is available, a lower tier service which means you cannot access F1 live broadcast via F1TV.

Stream F1 Online in Australia

You can see all Formula 1 sessions broadcast live in Australia on the Fox Sports channels. There’s also one (Network Ten) you can tune in to, and it includes free practice sessions, a qualifying session, and a live race ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, while you will only be able to see highlights from other races in the championship.

To broadcast live, use Australia’s dedicated streaming service – Kayo Sports, which offers access to every Formula 1 practice session, qualifying session and full Grand Prix race live. It offers a 14-day free trial for new customers and has plans starting at AUD 25. For overseas travelers, get local streaming coverage with a VPN when F1 races are on.

F1 Live in New Zealand

Spark Sport is the best service if you live in NZ $ 24.99 per month. This platform offers live coverage of all free practice sessions and qualifying rounds, as well as the race for the entire Formula 1 championship in 2022. You can also subscribe to the Pro F1TV tier, which includes all sessions, for NZ $ 14.99 per month (or NZ $ 99.99 per year).

Are you traveling outside of New Zealand? Try our highly recommended VPN service and live broadcast your streaming service from overseas.

The best way to watch F1 from Germany is with a VPN. It works by masking your real location and IP address and assigning you a new one from the country you are connecting to. So, when you connect to a US server, Sling TV allows you to access and watch its content.

How can I watch F1 in Netherlands? 🇳🇱

Ziggo Sport is the official F1 broadcaster in the Netherlands, it is the only provider that can offer F1 live on your phone or laptop.

However, in 2019, F1TV and Ziggo sport are partnering to bring F1TV Pro coverage for the first time ever.

Ziggo GO allows you to watch Ziggo Sport on your device, but you need a Ziggo Television subscription to access. The packages start at € 18.70 per month, but also include many additional non-F1 channels that you can enjoy.

Our recommendation:

Subscribing to F1TV Pro is the best way to watch F1 live in the Netherlands, it takes place monthly and means you don’t have to pay for extra channels you don’t want.

What about watching F1 Live in other countries?

The simplest option is to check the availability of F1TV, however, if it is not available in your country, you should check the list of F1 broadcasters and then check that the broadcaster offers a digital only package.

A Virtual Private Network allows you to access online services as if you were in another country, however remember that VPN will not always work in access, sometimes the service may use methods of detecting if you are using a VPN and blocking access.

F1TV will not let you subscribe in another country and then watch from your country, requires a billing address in the country to which the package you are subscribing applies to. This means you cannot use the F1TV Pro unless you are in a country that has access to F1TV Pro. You can check what level of access your country has on the F1TV website.

You may find that you can access third-party streaming services like Sky Sports and ESPN via a VPN, but you’ll typically need to sign up with a billing address in the country where the service is provided.
