Do you enjoy spending time in the huge virtual world of Minecraft, but less with all the random people the internet might send in your direction? Then Minecraft Realms will probably be for you!

A subscription service is available so you can have a server where only your invitees can jump in and play – and even better, you don’t have to be online for your friends to join – so there’s no pressure to always be around and game.

What is Minecraft Realms?

As mentioned, Minecraft Realms is a private multiplayer server you can set up, at a price we’ll get to soon, so you can play with your friends and without anyone else joining – it’s all done with an invite.

You can either add an existing world to Realms or create a brand new one and the server will be online for as long as you pay for it – so just disconnecting doesn’t mean the world will be unavailable to anyone they invited. You have the option to kick anyone who might become a problem, so it’s a safe space for younger players.

Outside of Java, Minecraft Realms is a cross-platform game so it doesn’t matter what console or device someone is playing on as they will still be able to join you.

The only slight downside is that you can’t create new mods for use – but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that this feature will be added in some form at a later date.

How to Join a Minecraft Realm

Joining Minecraft Realm is slightly different depending on the version of Minecraft you are playing.

How to Join a Realm in Java

You can join the Realm directly through the Minecraft interface.

  1. If no fields are available, look for an envelope icon at the top of the screen. If you have an invitation pending, it will be flashing.

  1. Select the envelope icon to open the invitation menu. You can see each Kingdom invitation you have received here.

As with the Java edition, you can join the kingdom via the Minecraft interface.

  1. Select a sphere from the list.
  2. If you haven’t joined any Realms yet, select the Friends tab.

  1. Enter the kingdom invite code you received in the field, and select Join.

If you are playing Bedrock but don’t have a kingdom to join, you can also join a much larger server and play with lots of other people. Some servers can have up to 10,000 players.

  1. You will connect to the server and you can play whenever you want.

Creating a kingdom is a bit different depending on the version of Minecraft you’re playing.

How to Make a Realm in Java

You have to pay for the Realm in Minecraft. It’s a monthly subscription fee of $ 7.99 per month, or you can opt for a six-month subscription. Java also offers a three-month subscription option.

  1. You will be taken to the confirmation page. Select the plan you want and select Check Out.

This will create your Kingdom that you can join from the Minecraft launcher. The great thing about Realms is that you can cancel at any time; you are not related to the subscription. If you leave your subscription inactive for more than 18 months, all your Kingdom data will be deleted.

How to Make a Realm in Bedrock

You can create a Realm directly from a Bedrock game without having to go to a separate page. The price is $ 7.99 per month, similar to the Java edition.

  1. Select Create on Realms> Add a 10-player kingdom.

Minecraft Realms Java Free Trial

Minecraft Realms: Java Edition works similar to the Realms Plus free trial. If there is a free trial available, it will appear in the Realms menu in the game. As noted on this Minecraft Help Center page, the availability of Realms trial versions is subject to change. Even though they intend to make this feature widely available, there is no promise that any user will be able to try Realms for free.

Despite other similarities to the Realms Plus free trials, users who sign up for Minecraft Realms: Java Edition can only play against each other.

Before you can join or create a kingdom, you must be signed in to your Xbox Live account in the Minecraft Pocket Edition application. The good news is, you don’t need a paid Gold account to connect to the server and start creating.

You can sign up for a free Xbox Live Silver account, and so can your friends (or in my case, my kids) and access Realms with no problem.

Platform compatibility

While adding Realms functionality to Minecraft Pocket Edition is welcome and opens up a whole new world of possibilities, there are some limitations. First of all, Minecraft Pocket Edition users can join and play Realms only on compatible platforms.

the iOS, Android, and Windows 10 versions of Minecraft work well together, while the PC and Mac versions of Minecraft will not work with the Pocket Edition Realms server.

In other words, if you have an iOS device and all your friends are using Android, you can still play together. But don’t expect to connect with a friend who plays on your Mac.

Minecraft took the world by storm right after its premiere in 2009. Minecraft Realms are personal multiplayer servers hosted by Minecraft that you and your friends can play on without disturbing anyone else. No one can join your world except those you invite.

Cost Difference & Server Management

The first and most important difference is that Minecraft Realms costs (currently € 10) while downloading the server package is completely free, assuming you intend to host it on your own PC. The features of the two are also slightly different. With the server pack, you get all the files and you can edit them as you like or add new ones to change the way the gameplay works in the game. Minecraft Realms does not provide any file access, preventing you from adding extra features via plugins. Though Mojang said further customization of the servers will be possible in later versions.
