What we love for: Between reading and deciphering the dense manual and having to fix many bugs each turn, our first game of Scythe took six hours. Nevertheless, we were immediately interested in the immense strategic depth of this game and the beauty, steampunk, mingling with the pastoral aesthetics of building an idyllic world (which Gregory Han raved about in our 2016 gift guide). Since then, our game times have dropped in line with the estimated 90 to 115 minutes. And Scythe took over the weekly gaming nights and inspired a dedicated group chat to discuss strategies, create and share memes, and schedule improvised sessions.

We’ve already purchased the seven-player expansion in less than two months, and are seriously considering purchasing an enhanced custom box to store a lot of cards and items more elegantly. You may be wondering what kind of people are willing to invest that much time into the game, getting back into the game over and over again. But once you learn the mechanics, playing Scythe will be the only thing you want to do.

How it’s played: In Scythe, players represent one of the five factions trying to make fortunes and land in Eastern Europe after WW1. Players start out with resources (including power, popularity, coins, and combat cards), a different starting location, and two (optional) hidden objectives. Scythe is an engine building game, so the goal is to set up systems that will continue to gather resources as you progress through the game. Each turn, each player chooses one of the four actions on their assigned faction mat. All players have the same set of actions, but receive different rewards, and each character has a set of unique strengths. Aside from the encounter cards (which players receive in some newly discovered territories), little luck is involved.

What we love for it: Imagine a game of Risk set in Middle-earth where the game didn’t last as long as re-watching all the Lord of the Rings movies. It’s basically a Small World experience, an area-controlled game filled with Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings among others. The game features many boards and a sufficient number of small pieces which took around 40 minutes to initialize. But when Small World starts rolling it’s easy to get stuck on it, and the different combinations of fantastic races and powers make each playthrough a little different. Thanks to numerous boards, Small World plays equally well with two people as with five. There are also a few versions now that offer slightly different graphics and tone, such as Small World).

What we love for it: Some games require sharp focus, advanced planning, and subtle strategy, and this can lead to a lot of intense, frowning around the quiet table. There are also games that are so fast, with such addictive energy that if you play them too late at night, your neighbors can complain about the noise. Anomy definitely falls into the latter category, and I’ve often worried that my more competitive friends would lose their vote after playing it. Mechanically, this is a simple word and pattern recognition game. However, in practice, a dramatic tension develops as the cards are turned over, symbols are revealed, and players race to find an answer before someone else does. The anomy can also be replayed as rounds usually last less than half an hour and there are nearly 100 cards that can appear.But if you get bored of this version (or more likely your group of players will remember all the cards), there are other editions including Anomy Party and Anomy X which add brand new card decks while keeping the gameplay dynamics the same.

How to play: Players choose one of the included decks, and each of them turns a card face up in front of them. Each card has one of the six colored symbols and a category. The categories can range from “rock opera” to “name” and are broad enough to lead to debates at the table (“Do sea monkeys really count as pets?”). The game continues, with each player flipping another card in front of him, flipping the previous card face down. If any two symbols around the table match when the card is flipped, these two players are “against”; whoever gives an example of something from a category on the opponent’s card takes the card and wins that point. Removing a card to reveal the card beneath it often leads to another encounter immediately after it, creating an atmosphere of intense anticipation.which is pierced by feverish bursts of sudden activity. Every time a card is flipped your brain goes through the process of identifying a new symbol in no time, compares it to what you know is on your card, quickly reads the category of the other card, accesses memory to try and find a good example and then shout it out before the other player does the same. This time-pressure computing challenge can cause your brain to short-circuit, making the game equally frustrating and addictive. Either way, it’s a fantastic time of chaotic screams and then finally shout it out before the other player does the same.
