CHARLOTTE, NC – Panthers coach Matt Rhule says Sam Darnold will kick the New Orleans Saints on Sunday instead of the 2015 league MVP Cam Newton.
Newton is 0-5 as the Carolina setter this year and have lost 13 consecutive starts as the Panthers start QB from the 2018 season. Newton won seven games in 2020 during their annual transfer from New England Patriots.
“Sam has worked hard to get back,” Rhule said Wednesday. “The first time he played well in that ball game (they played with the Saints) and I thought he did some good things last week,” in a 32: 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Panthers (5-10) were eliminated from the playoffs last week.
Darnold started the season 3-0 after being taken over from the New York Jets for three selections in the draft, but has a record of 1-5 in his last six starts.
He led the Panthers to a 26-7 victory over the Saints in Week 2, making 26 of 38 passes for 305 yards with two touchdowns and one intercept.

Rhule said Newton would be ready to play if needed, but would not commit to using him as two quarterback as he did last week when both QBs were rotating against Tampa Bay.

“We understand the business we’re in,” said Darnold, when asked if he had spoken to Newton. “It is, and we are both very professional. With that in mind, me and Cam are cool together and I’ll leave it at that.”
Newton has made just 54.8% of his passes this season and has thrown 676 yards in his five starts with five steals and four touchdown passes. It also ran 225 yards and five destroyers.
When asked how he dealt with the news of his training on the bench, Rhule said Newton was “the best professional” and added that the 11-year-old NFL veteran showed “as much energy on the pitch as anyone.”
Panthers are more devoted to Darnold than to Newton.
Darnold has a contract of over $ 18 million next season as GM Scott Fitterer chose the fifth year rookie option in his contract before he even saw him play down for Carolina.

On the other hand, Newton is an unrestricted free agent and is not expected to re-sign with Carolina.
Darnold missed five games with a shoulder injury but said he was healthy now.
“I got an appreciation for the game,” said Darnold. “It’s a cliche, but you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. When you’re out and about, watching sucks and has nothing to do with winning and losing.”
In other quarterback news, Panthers added PJ Walker’s third QB to the COVID-19 reserve list. Panthers now have 11 players on their roster.
The news comes the day after Carolina twisted playmaker Matt Barkley.
NOTES: Rhule said defender Stephon Gilmore was sidelined from Sunday’s game due to a groin injury. Gilmore is Carolina’s fourth defender to leave with injury this season, joining Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson and AJ Bouye on the sideline.
Taysom Hill has played the most games of any Saints quarterback this season. He completed 54 of 97 passes for 649 yards, two touchdowns and five steals. He also ran 53 times for 311 yards and five touchdowns.

The Saints’ motivation is clearer. They remain in the competition for play-offs. To reach the postsseason, they need to win and then hope others will end up in their favor.
And the vaunted NFC West
NFC West is rotating this year and the Saints are scheduled to fly to games in Arizona and San Francisco while hosting the Rams and Seahawks in New Orleans. It will be hard to sled; The weakest squad in the division, the Seahawks, is entering week 18 with just two wins less than the Saints right now. And there is a very realistic chance that all the other three teams will qualify for the post-season, with the 49ers winning over the Rams, eliminating New Orleans. The Saints seem to have some history with each of these wards, but that would surely add more bad blood to the mix.
It was some time before the Saints saw any of these opponents, especially in New Orleans – The Raven visited them most recently in 2014 and won 5 out of 7 games against the Saints (both Baltimore wins in 2018 and 2002). And the Saints haven’t beaten the Bengals in New Orleans since 1994. Cincinnati’s last visit in 2014 was a great 27-10 win, driven 152 yards of run by the former LSU to take Jeremy Hill back; More stand-out LSU characters such as Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, as well as former Saints Trey Hendrickson and Vonn Bell, are coming home in 2022. The Saints have won three in a row against the Steelers (including Pittsburgh in 2014), while their most recent win at Cleveland (in 2006) proved to be coach Sean Payton’s first victory.
Same-place finishers in the NFC and AFC
All this is yet to be determined, based on the results of week 18 and the final classifications. If New Orleans wins (or draws) their last game, they will take second place in NFC South and face the second-placed team in each of these divisions. If they lose in Atlanta, they will be in third place.
So if the current position persists, it will mean home games against the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Chargers, and another road game against the Philadelphia Eagles (oddly enough, their third trip to Philadelphia in three years). Third place moves the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders to New Orleans in an away match against the Washington Football Team, based on today’s standings. But as I said, there are a lot of moving parts involved.
Payton declined on Monday to find out who would start between Hill and Siemian for the Saints in the next match, against rival Falcons. Hill, coincidentally, made his first NFL start last season against Atlanta.

Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints Prediction and Preview
As the calendar approaches January, pair of rivals NFC South will face completely different goals at the end of the season on Sunday.
The hosts of the New Orleans Saints (7-8) have an outside shot in the playoffs as they play one game off-season but have to jump over three teams to qualify. Carolina Panthers (5-10), on the other hand, have a lot of people in auditions to keep their jobs, including head coach Matt Rhule and quarterback Sam Darnold.
The downward spiral of the Panthers continued last week after a home loss to the Buccaneers. This marked their fifth consecutive defeat. Carolina failed to score in the second half and for the third time this season they were held to a single digit final.
The severely depleted Saints’ roster and coaching staff had trouble doing anything in the offensive against Miami. Ian Book played in his first NFL regular season game and it showed up. To be fair, many important starters missed the game.
These NFC South rivals have a tied streak, with the Saints having a narrow 28-26 lead in the overall standings and a 14-12 lead in New Orleans. However, the Saints had mastered both meetings in the previous two seasons before the Panthers took their revenge in a week 2 win 26-7 this year.
Carolina (5-10) at New Orleans (7-8)
Start: Sunday Jan 2 4:25 pm ET

Range: Saints -6.5
Three Things to Watch
1. Will returning Saints players make a difference?
the Saints lost 21 players when they faced the dolphins. At least 13 of them have passed the NFL protocols and should be available to play against Carolina. Some of the returning players listed below include important members on either side of the ball.
Taysom Hill has played the most games of any Saints quarterback this season. He completed 54 of 97 passes for 649 yards, two touchdowns and five steals. He also ran 53 times for 311 yards and five touchdowns.
Demario Davis started all 14 matches before his positive test. He leads the team in tackling (63) and comes at a loss (13), and also has a defense of the third-most passing (six).
Malcolm Jenkins has also entered 14 competitions this season. He is fourth in the team in both defended passes (five) and duels (48). He gave his only interception for a touchdown.
Adam Trautman saw the action in 11 games with eight starts. The near end of the second year is fifth among the Saints in both receptions (26) and reception yards (245).
Recommended Articles
Kwon Alexander has played 10 games and started six this season. His seven takedowns for third place on the team. He also made two passes and intercepted one.
2. Can Panthers put together a running attack?
Carolina has racked up over 160 yards on the field only twice this season, winning both times. In contrast, opponents held the Panthers below 100 yards in six events, resulting in five losses.
Part of Karolina’s struggle to lead the ball has to do with the injury of Christian McCaffrey, who ended the season in the final game in November. Despite playing only seven games this season, he is still placed second on the side with 99 rushes at 442 yards.
Panthers are still looking for someone to fill the void. Rookie Chuba Hubbard was tough, making 146 quick tries over 15 games, although he only has 509 yards and four scores. More disturbing for Carolina is who comes behind Hubbard: the two playmakers.
Cam Newton has only played six games but is placed third on the side with 225 yards. Newton is tied to Darnold to lead the team in quick touchdowns with five players. Darnold is also fourth in speed yards (196). No one else on the list has amassed more than 100 yards of run this season. Can the Panthers count on someone other than the playmaker to successfully handle the ball?
3. Will Sam Darnold be able to rekindle the fire in the Panthers?
Rhule announced that Darnold will be starting New Orleans on Sunday. Darnold hadn’t started the game since week 9 when he suffered a shoulder injury that eventually landed on IR. He returned to the field for the first time last week, making 15 of 32 passes out of 190 yards without a touchdown or steal to ease the strain on a failed Newton.
Carolina has fared better under Darnold this season. He led them to a 4-5 start and completed 182 of 306 tries with an average of 220.7 yards per game in those starts. However, he threw seven passes on a touchdown to 11 steals.
One of the victories at Darnold included beating Saints 26-7 at home on Week 2. He combined 26 out of 38 passes for 305 yards and one intercept. This effort marked his longest passing distance in any game this season and his second-highest completion percentage.
Panthers have already opted for a fifth-year Darnold option for $ 18.9 million next season, but there’s no guarantee he’ll have an initial job. However, if he is playing well at the bottom, he can persuade them not to pick a playmaker.
Final Analysis
What is the motivation of the Panthers? Does Darnold have to prove that he should remain with Carolina’s squad for next season? Does Rhule have to keep winning by improving his team’s total victories over the past season so as not to lose a hot spot for next year? Are there any runner auditions intended to be a full-time follow-up to Christian McCaffrey?
The Saints’ motivation is clearer. They remain in the competition for play-offs. To reach the postsseason, they need to win and then hope others will end up in their favor.

Complete list of opponents for the New Orleans Saints in 2022
the New Orleans Saints are still trying to sneak into the play-offs in the final week of the regular season. With that in mind, we’re looking a little bit ahead and looking at their 2,022 opponents early on.

We’re entering week 18 of the NFL season and the New Orleans Saints are still alive in the playoff hunt. They currently have 8-8 in their first 16 games and the season has not gone as they expected. They got derailed by injuries and had to fight teeth and claws to even get to $ 0.500 in the final week of the season. However, considering what we’ve seen with this team, I wouldn’t expect a deep play-off from them.
When looking at the off-season, there are some things that saints need to address about the offense. They signed quarterback Jameis Winston on a one-year contract that ended early due to injury. They have to determine whether they want to bring Winston back or pursue another quarterback. New Orleans has also suffered from Michael Thomas injuries for two seasons and desperately needs a wide receiver to differentiate.
New Orleans Saints 2022 opponents
The New Orleans Saints will face six NFC South opponents, half at home and half on the road. In addition, they draw duels against all four teams from AFC North and NFC West. Their 17th game will be against AFC West, who will finish in the same position as them.
Away: Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers≤ NFC East (Eagles or Washington)
He added his thoughts on how Winston, who has a one-year contract with the team, played this season before his injury: “We were definitely encouraged. We felt we saw shoulder strength, leadership, all these things.
The case for Ian Book
The Newcomer of Notre Dame is now a more emergency quarterback for the Saints if injuries continue to build up. But the organization saw enough in him to invest in a quarterback in the previous NFL draft.
In preseason, Book made 9 out of 16 passes for 126 yards and intercepted in limited action. Payton was asked if he would be comfortable with Book being the chief deputy or forced to act.
“Well, if we were comfortable in the quarterback room, we’d be comfortable with a substitute as a rookie,” said Payton. “Otherwise, we would be uncomfortable in the room and probably look outside.”
What all this means going forward
Payton declined on Monday to find out who would start between Hill and Siemian for the Saints in the next match, against rival Falcons. Hill, coincidentally, made his first NFL start last season against Atlanta.
“We’ll see. It’s going to be the $ 6 million question and honestly, this week we’ll look at what’s best for our team,” said the coach.”
