Overall, Shadow of the Tomb Raider has received generally positive reviews. However, it can seem to be flooded with all the “markers” that developers want to include in modern action games, such as the trading system, stealth mechanics, and so on.

Sequel to ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ in ‘Tomb Raider 4’ announcement only a matter of time
The sequel to Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be announced any day as the grunts of Tomb Raider 4 slowly surface.
Updated (February 14, 2021): Added the latest information about Tomb Raider 4 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the franchise!
The Tomb Raider reboot trilogy has been critically acclaimed and allowed Lara Croft to fully blossom on current-gen consoles. Now that she has some great recent games behind her, it’s time for Mrs. Croft to continue to be the full-fledged Tomb Raider we’ve always known her behind.
The latest Tomb Raider game to be released was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It depicted Lara’s descent down a darker path, where she completely leaves behind her days of shock in the doe’s eyes and instead steps into a cold-blooded murderer’s shoes. Sure, Lara still has feelings and emotions, but if an opponent gets in her way, she won’t hesitate to deftly defeat him.

Hiding in the shadows, wearing a camouflage mud on her face and looking a little crazy, Lara now emerges from the bushes to cruelly defeat her enemies by stealth and brutality. If a group of soldiers shoots at her, she takes the initiative and uses a semi-automatic arm to mow whatever is in her sight.
The Shadow was a great way to tell the story of Lara’s origin, but what’s next? Square Enix and development studio Eidos-Montréal have several options here, as we have now caught up with the original timeline featured in the 1996 title on PlayStation 1.
Is ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ the last game in the reboot series?
Yes, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is indeed the last game in the reboot series, but there will probably be more in Lara’s adventures. Square Enix stated that “Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the cinematic end of the story of Lara’s creation.” The important thing to note is the language of the “origin story” as opposed to the “Tomb Raider finale”. The story trilogy may be complete, but Lara’s adventures have only just begun.
More likely than not, the Shadow of the Tomb Raider sequel will be a remake of the first game in the series. While the remake of the first Tomb Raider in Anniversary was released in 2007, almost 15 years have passed since the title was released for PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
The story of Lara’s origins was made for this reboot. For the first time in the series, we have a perfectly coherent image of Lara Croft as a young woman. She didn’t show up with fire pistols, and now that she has had some time to wear mercenary clothes, we now know how she became the woman she is in the first Tomb Raider
Some have suggested Square Enix should leave the original three PlayStation 1 games alone. They stand the test of time and are the ones that need the least improvement. Lara’s fourth adventure set in Giza, 1999’s Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, could be the logical next step in Ms. Croft.
Whether it’s a remake of the 1996 PS1 title or 1999 Last Revelation title, one thing is for sure: the next Tomb Raider game following Shadow of the Tomb Raider will likely be a remake of one of the PlayStation 1 classics. The origins stories of Lara did a great job leading to all of the epic moments we experience in the original trilogy. While a brand new adventure after the origin trilogy would be great, it wouldn’t make sense to linger too long in Lara’s past.
The reboot included many features that became commonplace in third person shooter and action adventure games in those days. It also featured a cover system, a crafting system, and an added emphasis on realism, among other things, all done on half-open levels on a lost Japanese island.
Leaks
Franchise game director Will Kerslake said the project will unite the ideas of the original PS1 games with the newer reboot trilogy.
“We imagine the future of Tomb Raider unfolding after [the rebooted trilogy], telling stories that draw on both a wide range of Core Design and Crystal Dynamics games in an effort to unify these timelines,” he said.
“Thanks to Tomb Raider’s rich history, it’s not an easy task, and please be patient as we go through the process.”
The official Tomb Raider account also posted a new video on Twitter in which it claims to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the franchise throughout the year.
He won’t be 25 until October – but with such a bold announcement, it’s almost certain that a new flagship game will be announced this year.

What Is Tomb Raider?
A third-person video adventure game in which the players take control of Lara Croft.
While gameplay and stories have changed over the course of the year, the previous trilogy traced Lara’s transformation into a veteran tomb explorer and ruthless survivor.
The gameplay elements focus more on survival, although exploration is used in the game while exploring the island and various optional tombs.
Despite the fact that the game is presented in a linear format, players are free to roam the areas and visit locations throughout the game.
Eidos Montreal and Nixxes Software have created a new game engine for the game. This improved the overall performance and graphics of the title.
Tomb Raider 2 release date: When will Tomb Raider 2 arrive?
When it was announced that Wheatley would be directing the sequel, a release date was also announced on March 19, 2021.
Considering the movie didn’t start filming, it was no surprise that it was ultimately delayed indefinitely. Misha Green may have taken over as writer / director, but we’re still no closer to the confirmed release date.
In July 2021, Vikander noted that the sequel is apparently not officially green lit, but everything is in place: “The script is in the making and I think everyone is excited and would love to visit Lara again.”
A little over a year passed from the making of the first film to the premiere. Every time the Tomb Raider 2 filming ends, it will likely be a little over a year before we see it.
It’s worth noting that this is entirely speculation as nothing has been confirmed other than a postponement. Until that happens, we won’t know anything for sure.
Be sure to check out here for more information about when and when they’ll be announced.
Tomb Raider 2 plot: What will Tomb Raider 2 be about?
After Lara saved the world and stopped the deadly virus from escaping the tomb, she returned to London and accepted her place with her father.
However, she soon discovered that Trinity – the group that wanted to release the virus – was directly linked to Croft Holdings through Trinity’s parent company Patna. Ana Miller, Lara’s father’s business partner, is Patna’s boss, and Lara learns that Ana has worked with Vogel and Trinity throughout their plan.

In the credits scene, Lara buys the video game’s iconic twin pistols, determined to continue her father’s work to stop Trinity.
Whether the sequel will continue that plot of Lara’s battle against Trinity remains to be seen, but there’s also an opportunity for the sequel to simply create a new tomb and mission for Lara, completely detached from the original movie.
It may also draw inspiration from the sequel to the Rise of the Tomb Raider video game, given that the first film was inspired by a reboot of the 2013 Crystal Dynamics game franchise.
In this game, Lara travels to the lost city of Kitezh, following her father’s research into immortality – and the magical MacGuffin who can provide it – called the Divine Source. Misha Green said she is a fan of the game so read what you want.

My favorite classic era is Legend, and from the survival era it’s a combination of Rise and Shadow. So I think something like this:
* whispers * Who is just as excited as I am for @TombRaiderMovie. #TombRaider

Whatever it is, Vikander is just excited about the prospect of working with Green on a “very big movie together”.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a sequel to 2018’s Rise of the Tomb Raider and the third and reportedly final installment of the Survivor timeline.
Tomb Raider III
Release Date: November 20, 1998
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Sony PlayStation, classic Mac OS
Tomb Raider III, also known as Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft, has kept the formula mostly unchanged, for better or for worse.
The game offers a variety of locations around the world and takes a step back from the exhilarating pace of the second game to focus more on exploration and puzzles like the original Tomb Raider.
Of course, the engine was updated again. The game had even better graphics, but as mentioned above, it didn’t make any significant changes to the proven formula we’ve already seen in the previous two games.
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
Release Date: November 19, 1999
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Sony PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, classic Mac OS
The fourth game in the series, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, is the fourth installment in the series, as well as the first game to start getting tired of the franchise.
As you might have guessed, The Last Revelation did little beyond the usual technical improvements – improved graphics, smoothed out gameplay mechanics, and new hardware.
It is one of the weakest links in the series and it didn’t really stand out. Also, as you can guess from the title, it was originally supposed to be the last Tomb Raider game. However, due to the sheer popularity of the series, more games simply had to be developed, with a few mediocre sequels due before the series got its first soft restart.
Tomb Raider 2013 has received critical and fan acclaim. Many believe that the reboot was ahead of its time. The graphics, sound, music, atmosphere, gameplay and story are still relevant today.
When will Tomb Raider 2 be released?
You should know that the phrase “slowly moving towards the theaters” is an understatement. “Tomb Raider 2” was announced in 2019 and Warner Bros and MGM initially launched the sequel for a premiere in March 2021, doing so with indie wizard Ben Wheatley in the director’s seat (via Deadline). That movie was also set to be shot in spring 2020, but we all remember what happened last year, right? As of the deadline, this production delay eventually led Wheatley to withdraw from the project, prompting producers to indefinitely postpone the release date of “Tomb Raider 2.”
As of this writing, “Tomb Raider 2” still doesn’t have a new release date. However, there is some good news for this piece of Deadline as it notes that “Lovecraft Country” and “Underground” master, Misha Green, have taken the director’s vacant chair. Even if the movie hasn’t hit the cameras yet, we should all be very excited about what Green brings to the tale of brave archeology hero Lara Croft. In any case, don’t forget to check for updates regarding the new release date for “Tomb Raider 2.”
Who’s in Tomb Raider 2?
While we have no idea when Tomb Raider 2 is coming to a theater nearby, we have a good idea of who will be in it. Fans of the 2018 movie will be delighted to learn that Alicia Vikander will re-star as the title daredevil Lara Croft. In fact, Vikander’s performance as Croft was one of the few legitimate bright spots in the 2018 film, and it seems that neither the delay nor the director’s upheaval could have forced the Oscar-winning actor to appear in the sequel.
With Vikander’s return, it is certain, it is not clear which of her “Tomb Raider” friends (if any) will be joining her. The new movie is likely a follow-up to this 2018 project, so it’s safe to assume that Kristin Scott Thomas will reappear as Ana Miller, who was apparently the main villain. Even as he met the noblest ending in the first film, Dominic West is likely to return as the archaeologist Lara, Richard Croft’s father, though he will undoubtedly do so in a flashback. Unfortunately, it looks like we will not be honored by another scene-stealing role of Walton Goggins as Mathias Vogel, as this character met an appropriately fatal end in the original film. But stay tuned as we will be updating the site with casting updates for “Tomb Raider 2” when they are announced.
Considering the movie didn’t start filming, it was no surprise that it was ultimately delayed indefinitely. Misha Green may have taken over as writer / director, but we’re still no closer to the confirmed release date.
Survivor Timeline Trilogy
Tomb Raider (Reboot) – 2013
Publisher: Square Enix. Developer: Crystal Dynamics.>
After a four-year hiatus, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix returned with another restart. The game debuted in 2013 on PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows. In 2014, the game also hit macOS X and Linux. Currently, versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series are available.
Tomb Raider 2013 tells a new story of Lara Croft’s origin. The action takes place in Yamatai, a fictional lost island of the old Japanese empire. Lara Croft and her team are looking for an island. However, the shipwreck leaves the survivors stranded.
The setting provides a linear-cinematic action adventure game. As this happens before Lara Croft has gained any combat experience, your goals are to survive, save your friends, and escape the island. This way you will slowly make your way around the island to find what you need and those who need you.
The gameplay mechanics focus on survival elements. While the game is linear, the areas are wide and encourage you to discover supplies, ammo, and secrets.
More importantly, the Survivor Timeline trilogy has added RPG mechanics. Lara Croft earns XP for fighting, hunting, exploring, raiding tombs, and collecting artifacts. As Lara’s levels progress, players earn skill points that can be spent on a variety of combat, survival, or exploration skills.
Tomb Raider 2013 has received critical and fan acclaim. Many believe that the reboot was ahead of its time. The graphics, sound, music, atmosphere, gameplay and story are still relevant today.
By 2015, the game had sold over 8 million copies. It was a new pinnacle for the series.
Currently, the game has a multiplayer function, 4v4 PvP combat on different maps. If you browse Steam, you’ll see a wide variety of skins and upgrades for the multiplayer portion of the game.
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (Spinoff) – 2014
Publisher: Square Enix. Developer: Crystal Dynamics.
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris continue the Keeper of Light with similar A-RPG isometric gameplay. There were also RPG elements, platformers and puzzles.
The game also allows cooperation for four players, online or offline. If you play alone, you will be in control of Lara. Once friends join your party, they can play as Carter, Isis, and Horus.
Collaboration works as a drop-in / drop-out feature. The more players join your party, the game becomes more difficult and rewarding.
As for the plot, Lara and her team go to the Egyptian underworld to defeat the evil god Set.
The game debuted on PS4 and Xbox One in 2014. Various DLCs and packages are currently available for the title. There is also a Google Stadia version available.
Rise of the Tomb Raider – 2015
Publisher: Square Enix. Developer: Crystal Dynamics.
Who Created Lara Croft?
The creator of Lara Croft was Toby Gard, the creator of Core Design. In other words, he didn’t make the game. Instead, he was part of the Tomb Raider team that began in 1990.
He had creative control over character creation and storytelling. However, he lost control of creativity in 1997 and left Core Design. He currently owns Cathuria Games.
Funny how he didn’t have a very successful career. At least Lara Croft’s popularity is much greater than his.
For example, it’s promoting Dream Cycle, an early access action adventure game that looks promising… but has almost zero support.
The game also allows cooperation for four players, online or offline. If you play alone, you will be in control of Lara. Once friends join your party, they can play as Carter, Isis, and Horus.
Development
Square Enix inadvertently confirmed that the game is in an early stage of development as early as at least June 2015, at E3 this year [6] .
In August 2016, Ian Milham, the artistic director of the Dead Space series and the creative director of Battlefield Hardline, was hired by Crystal Dynamics as the director of the next Tomb Raider game [7]. However, in September 2017, Milham left Crystal Dynamics to work at Outpost Games. [8]
It was announced that Rhianna Pratchett would leave the Tomb Raider franchise in January 2017, as such, it is unknown if she contributed to the game’s development. [9]
In December 2017, it was officially announced that the new Tomb Raider game is in development, with news coming in 2018. It was also stated that there will be a short window between the official announcement and the game’s release. [10]
on March 14, The Tomb Raider website was changed to show an abstract image of what appeared to be a solar eclipse, with the date and time of March 15, 2018 at 6:00 a.m. PDT, confirming the official disclosure of the day. [11] The trailer actually released as planned, offering a release date on September 14, 2018, as well as an official trailer revealing the full length on April 27.
Camilla Luddington has confirmed that she will be back to introduce Lara Croft via her personal Twitter. [12]
The game is being developed on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, running simultaneously on all platforms.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider won gold on July 24, 2018.
Unpatched ending
For those who purchased a physical copy of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and completed the game before downloading the Day One patch, you can see an alternate post-credits ending. The dialogue remains essentially identical, but the background elements are a nod to Lara’s two guns and an unopened letter from Jacqueline Natli, the 1996 Tomb Raider antagonist, as well as its remake of Tomb Raider: Anniversary and 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld sequel.
Leaks
Shadow of the Tomb Raider has been the subject of an unusually large number of leaks:
- on October 31, 2016, a Reddit user spotted a laptop screen on a Montreal subway that displayed a banner displaying a project logo titled “Shadow of the Tomb Raider.” The leak indicated that Crystal Dynamics might not be the creator and Eidos Montreal, creator of the Deus Ex and Thief video game franchise, would take control. Eidos Montreal previously worked on a multiplayer for Tomb Raider. However, considering Ian Milham has been hired as the new Tomb Raider director of Crystal Dynamics, it is unlikely that Crystal Dynamics will not be the lead developer.
- In January 2017, it was announced that Crystal Dynamics was working with Eidos Montreal to develop a game based on the Marvel’s Avengers franchise. Crystal Dynamics Community Manager [13] However, it may have had something to do with the next comic book arc to bridge the gap between Rise and the next game.
- Another possible leak was leaked in June 2017, showing possible logos and concept art. Concept art depicted Lara with what appears to be an Aztec pyramid in the background, which is in keeping with a possible Mexican orientation. Lara is also shown with a bow, knife and smoke grenades, as well as new weapons such as a machete and a spear.
- Square Enix’s December 2017 update had a secret hidden in the text. Taking the first letter from the beginning of each sentence, the word “SHADOW” appears, suggesting the original leak from Reddit was legitimate. [14]
- The trailer for the game leaked the day before its scheduled release on March 15, showing the dense jungle and the Aztec pyramid. [15] The trailer confirmed previous leaks such as the Mayan title and theme.
- on April 26, the day before the game’s full disclosure, a magazine leaked, which apparently revealed that Sam and Reyes would be returning to the series, though Lara’s voice actress Camilla Luddington said it wasn’t true. [16] It was also revealed that the game will have three special editions: Steelbook, Ultimate Edition and Croft Edition. It also states that the game will have a season pass. In addition, the Ultimate Edition will include a range of exclusive items, a Lara statue, a bottle opener designed like Lara’s climbing ax, and a flashlight. The Ultimate Edition will also include 3 unique outfits and weapons for the game. [17]
