Nvidia GTX 1050 Review. How much is gtx 1050

Energy consumption is a kicker. The GTX 1050 has a tiny TDP (Design Thermal Power) of just 75W, which means it gets all its power from the motherboard. On board our high-end overclocked computer, the entire system consumed only 150 watts during the Hitman test; that’s 61 watts less than the RX 460.

Nvidia GTX 1050 Review

Do you want to build a gaming platform for as little cash as possible? The Nvidia GTX 1050 is the cheapest Pascal generation graphics card available and is capable of playing some of the most popular eSports games in Full HD. Such games include Overwatch, CounterStrike: Global Offensive, and Fortnite.

But this card is not just for esports: like the rival AMD Radeon RX 460, this graphics card is capable of playing the latest games in Full HD if you want to tweak the settings a little. It can even launch games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Civilization VI with a few tweaks.

Thanks to Overclockers UK for providing this control unit

Most of all, though, it’s the GPU that is best suited for ultra-budget PCs or as an upgrade to a much older GPU that doesn’t have an external power connector. Thanks to its low power consumption, the Nvidia GTX 1050 is also found in fantastic all-round laptops like the Dell XPS 15 and bargain gaming laptops like the Dell G3 15.

The model under review is an interpretation of the EVGA, which costs around £ 110. This is roughly the current rate for the GTX 1050, and is quite representative of the overall 1050 market. While this review will make comparisons with its closest competitor, the RX 460, the two fall in slightly different categories.

Nvidia GTX 1050 – Specs and Design

The GTX 1050 uses Nvidia’s ultra-efficient Pascal architecture as used in the 1050 Ti, 1060, 1070 and the class-leading GTX 1080. If this battle had only been won in terms of energy efficiency, there would be no competition here.

But there is more to it. It is the most stripped down Pascal chip with only 640 CUDA cores. This lack of cores is compensated by the high clock speed in boost mode of 1455 MHz on this particular model. It also comes with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

Nvidia GTX 1050

EVGA opted for a compact design, with a card measuring only 145 mm in length. This means it will fit the most compact gaming platforms, although since it’s double the height you’ll need to consider the clearance under the motherboard’s PCI-E slot.

It’s cooled by a small heatsink and single fan, and comes in a fairly simple yet stylish black and gray EVGA plastic shell.

Nvidia GTX 1050

This is one area where the Nvidia GTX 1050 has a significant advantage over the RX 460: there are many more compact GTX 1050s on the market, and the small RX 460 is actually just starting to emerge.

You will get DisplayPort 1.4, DVI-D, and HDMI 2.0b connectors, matching the RX 460 outputs. Cannot find ATX power connectors: This card is fully PCI-E bus powered.

Keep in mind that if you add an Nvidia GTX 1050 card to a much older system with slower memory, fewer CPU cores, and slower storage – and I imagine a lot of GTX 1050 will come to that – your results can vary greatly, especially in the games tested here AAA.

GeForce GTX 1050: Price, performance, features compared

GeForce GTX 1050 at a glance

How powerful is the GTX 1050? The GTX 1050 delivers solid performance at medium to high settings in most modern 1080p games.
When did the GTX 1050 come out? Nvidia launched the GTX 1050 on October 25, 2016.
How Much is the GTX 1050? You’ll find the GTX 1050 typically retailed for around $ 190.

What is the GTX 1050?

The GTX 1050 is an affordable starting point for the Nvidia GTX 10 line of graphics cards. While it can’t handle modern high-fidelity games at 1080p with the same smoothness as the GTX 1060 or GTX 1070, it will work with most current titles if you like play at 30fps or change the graphics settings to preset medium / high.

This makes the GTX 1050 the perfect card for those looking for a comparable PlayStation 4 or Xbox One experience, as well as for those upgrading an aging GeForce 700 series or earlier GPU. It is also an attractive choice for anyone entering the gaming scene for the first time thanks to its affordable price and low energy requirements.

Under the hood, the GTX 1050 uses the Nvidia Pascal GPU architecture that offers, among other things, increased performance in virtual reality. The catch is that both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift VR goggles recommend using the GTX 1060 or better to ensure stable VR performance. This doesn’t mean VR is impossible on the GTX 1050, but if you want to avoid performance issues and potential incompatibility, you’d better jump to the tab with a little more grunt.

At launch, the GTX 1050 was only available in one configuration with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM and 128-bit memory bus. In its standard configuration, this configuration has a base GPU clock speed of 1354 MHz and a boost frequency of 1455 MHz.

Nvidia expanded the GTX 1050 line with a second configuration in May 2018. Featuring 3GB of GDDR5 RAM and a smaller 96-bit memory bus, this configuration boasts faster base and elevated clock speeds of 1392MHz and 1518MHz respectively.

Both configurations enjoy a memory speed of 7 Gb / s.

The physical properties of the GTX 1050 can vary significantly depending on the brand, card design and any additional features the manufacturer has included. Most GTX 1050 cards are dual-slot cards and require an adjacent slot on the motherboard to be empty to accommodate most of the card, but thinner variants are available for PCs where real estate is at a premium.

In addition to the physical space requirements, the GTX 1050 also needs a free PCIe 3.0 slot to plug in, as well as a 300W power supply from which to draw juice. Unlike its more power-hungry sibling, it doesn’t require an external power connector and is instead powered by the motherboard itself.

What features does the GTX 1050 support?

The Nvidia Pascal graphics processor architecture brings many features to the GTX 1050, both in terms of hardware and software. The most important of them are:

  • HDCP 2.2
  • OpenGL 4.5
  • Display port 1.4
  • HMDI 2.0b
  • DL-DVI
  • Simultaneous multi-projection
  • Triple buffering at driver level

How powerful is the GTX 1050?

As the most affordable member of Nvidia’s GTX 10 family, the GTX 1050 is not exactly a powerhouse of performance. It won’t maximize graphics settings in the latest games, or handle 4K resolutions in anything but the least taxed 2D and 3D games.

Both GTX 1050 cards were able to hit a very decent 58fps in this demanding game at 1080p, making them a great choice for 1080p games with older titles. The RX 460 was unable to compete, however, delivering a decent but not competitive 40fps.

The system requirements of CS: GO are so low that you can play on a modern Ultrabook with integrated graphics. The GTX 1050 will reproduce this at high FPS with no problem. Same with the other titles mentioned.

Who the GTX 1050 is not for

GTX 1080 Ti

In the case of very high frames per second and high resolution, you will definitely be better off with one of them.

Even though it’s a decent card for little money, there are circumstances where you shouldn’t even consider the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti.

  • If you want to play in higher definition than 1080p.
  • If you want to stream PC games.
  • If you are a video editor that will use the GPU in the rendering process.
  • If you like to play all your games on Ultra graphics settings or play over 100 FPS.

It’s no longer funny to want to play at very high frames per second. 144 Hz and 165 Hz monitors are more popular and more affordable than ever, and even 240 Hz monitors are hitting the market at 1080p. But aside from the most basic titles, the GTX 1050 probably isn’t the best option for them.

Likewise, if you aspire to go beyond 1080p, look elsewhere. The best place to play great at 1440p is the GTX 1070, while a good 4K performance requires you to upgrade to the GTX 1080 or GTX 1080 Ti.

Content creators may also find the GTX 1050 a bit restrictive. If you’re a streamer, it’ll probably be fine if you’re going to mainly stream console games, but less if you’re going to play and stream PC games from the same PC. Likewise, if you’re going to be using the GPU to render movies, you’d better save and buy something more efficient.

The bottom line

Question asked whether the GTX 1050 is suitable for gaming. The answer is yes, surprisingly, but also within certain limits. It’s a budget GPU that delivers surprisingly good results in the form of a 1050 or 1050 Ti.

it’s great for cheaper gaming laptops, perfect for “esports games” like League of Legends and CS: GO, and even provides more power than you’d expect in some of the more intense titles. You won’t be playing PUBG at high FPS, but this card isn’t garbage.

Where it falls is where your needs or desires are higher. If you’re pairing it with a 1440p or 4K display for gaming, think again. If you’re going to be using it to play PC games and stream from the same PC, you probably need something crunchy. Likewise, if you are a video editor.

But with prices starting at around $ 135 for a 2GB GTX 1050, you can definitely get into PC gaming without breaking the bank.

Bioshock Infinite

The popular title Bioshock Infinite isn’t overly demanding, but it’s popular and looks great. In the built-in benchmarking program, we set the graphics level to the highest setting (Ultra + DDOF).

In the Bioshock, the GTX 1050 Ti did not do much better than the GTX 1050, which really strengthens the value proposition for the weaker cards. Both GTX 1050 cards were able to roar at 73fps or 74fps at 1080p for a great gaming experience. It was also a bit faster than what the GTX 950 was capable of. The relatively better RX 460 limped at 52 frames per second.

Hitman: Absolution

Next was Hitman: Absolution, which is an aging game but still quite difficult on the graphics card.

We run this test with the 8x MSAA option enabled, which makes everything extremely difficult. Both GTX 1050 cards landed one frame per second at 1080p, so there’s not much to say about this rivalry. Also, once again, the GTX 1050 Ti version of this card did not justify its higher price, as it only ran a few frames per second faster in total. Surprisingly, about $ 50 more expensive, the Radeon RX 470 was only a few frames per second faster than the 1050 cards. Apparently, the GTX 1050 is in a pretty good spot for performance and price.
