Stream without a capture card: How to setup Lightstream with your PlayStation 5 to Twitch

Creating a great looking stream as a console content creator shouldn’t require a high-end gaming PC or capture card, but you’ll need a basic PC or laptop for the initial setup. With our Lightstream Gamer project, you can do all the things professional streamers do to increase audience engagement, such as adding text, branding overlays, and alerts.

Gamer Projects works for any Twitch streamer on PlayStation 4 or 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X / S looking to add more detail to their stream without a capture card. The beauty of this integration is that you can go as simple or as complex as you like – and once everything is set up you don’t have to open Lightstream for it to work.

Setup

To get started, simply log in to Lightstream Studio with your Twitch account.

If this is your first time logging in, you must choose the Lightstream plan. All plans will allow you to stream from PS5. They come with a 7-day free trial period and can be canceled at any time. If you only plan on streaming content from your console, the gaming plan is all you need.

After creating your account, Lightstream will create a project for you. There are two types of Lightstream projects: Gamer and Creator. You can create multiple projects for different types of setups, just remember that player projects are the only ones that can receive the feed from your PlayStation 5. Just look for purple in the top bar and the Gamer Project tag above the project name.

Next, you’ll want to adjust the project settings. You can set the project name, resolution and Auto Live option. The Auto Live feature tells the project to automatically start sending overlays to your Twitch channel when it receives a channel from the Game Source layer. This means Lightstream can automatically add your personalizations to your stream, even if you don’t have it open!

Once setup is complete, you’ll see 10 backup codes that you can use in case you no longer have access to the Google Authenticator app or no longer have access to it. Keep these codes in a safe but accessible place. For security reasons, each backup code can only be used once.

What is Amazon Prime Gaming?

Prime Gaming gives players access to exclusive content that they normally would not be able to unlock. This includes skins and cosmetics in games like Warzone, Apex, and Valorant; free packages for FIFA; money and discounts in GTA: Online; and a lot more.

If you’re playing any online multiplayer game it’s really worth checking to see if Prime prizes are included. Whether you’re using PlayStation or Xbox, you can start earning money just by connecting to your Twitch account.

Step 3: Setting Up for Streaming There are many guides on how to get the most out of OBS, however there are only a few things you need to worry about if you are just starting out. The only options you really need to focus on are video bitrate, audio bitrate, and encoder.

Streaming from Nintendo Switch

Streaming on the Nintendo Switch is a bit more difficult as you’ll need a capture card, a dock (Switch Lite doesn’t support capture cards), and a laptop or PC to keep things running.

Step 1: Plug the capture card into your Switch dock and make sure it is connected to your TV. You will need one HDMI cable connected to your capture card and then another connected to your TV or monitor.

Step 2: Once you’ve connected your capture card to your Switch and your PC / laptop, run OBS and make sure you connect the streaming platform – Twitch – in the Settings menu.

Step 3: From here make sure you have a Twitch account. If not, visit Twitch.tv and create an account using the creator dashboard in the top right corner.

Step 4: Click on Settings> Stream> Show under the main stream key. Copy it and open OBS.

Step 5: Select File and then Settings in OBS.

Step 6: Then click Streaming and make sure you have selected Twitch as your service.

Step 7: Paste the stream key here and make sure you click Apply.

Step 8: Select Start Streaming and if you go back to Twitch you should see your recording in the Stream Manager area.

Streaming from PlayStation 4

The process of streaming to Twitch from your PS4 console is simple. You don’t need to use any external software, and you can even use the PlayStation Camera as a microphone and “face camera” when broadcasting!

If you have a PlayStation Camera and want to use it, consider connecting it. Just make sure the camera’s microphone is not muted in the popup menu on the console, otherwise you won’t be able to use it in the stream.

Step 1: Play the game

Unlike Windows and macOS, whatever game you plan to stream should be open before changing any broadcast settings. After launching the game, press the Share button next to the touchpad on the PS4 DualShock 4 controller to open the broadcast settings.

Step 2: Change the settings and start streaming!

Here, select Broadcast Gameplay and you’ll be given the option to stream through three different streaming services. Select Twitch and the service will provide you with a streaming key. Then go to twitch.tv/activate and enter the key. Your PS4 will be ready to start streaming in a few moments, but let’s tweak a few extra settings first.

In the Broadcast Gameplay menu, you can change the title of your stream, the quality, and whether you want to use a camera and / or microphone. Once you’re happy with your setup, hit Stream Now and show your skills to the world!
