The Turing architecture, in both the RTX 2060 and 2070, combines many types of specialized processor cores, enabling real-time ray tracing to be implemented. The TU106 GPU chip has a matrix area of ​​445 mm² and 10,800 million transistors. The RTX 2060 differs from the fully unlocked RTX 2070 which uses the same processing unit but has all 2304 shader units (CUDA cores), 144 texture mapping units, and 64 render output units enabled. A Mystery GPU?

I asked Nvidia about it. The replacement with PR revealed that the Super line represents improvements in clock performance and “increased performance that allowed us to offer more cores and higher performance at every price point. Turing, we’ve been working on improving Turing. Tune faster memory clocks, improve processes and performance. This allowed us to increase the number of cores in the RTX 2070 Super and 2060 Super. We are proud of the performance gains these new GPUs are delivering.”

Now we turn to those performance gains that are most certainly real. However, I suspect that behind at least some of the magic of the Super lineage, there may be a well-known process known as “binning”. (Remember: not that it’s bad.)

When a GPU or processor matrix is ​​”baked” (that is, etched) in silicon, the process does not produce perfect results every time. Instead of buying 100 GPUs that function identically to the chip manufacturer, you can get (for the argument) 25 that perform less well, 50 that perform as specified, and another 25 that can perform above spec.

Dies that meet the above requirements can be put in the “bin” for cards where overclocking is done in the factory or encouraged right out of the box, while those that meet the specification can instead end up in reference versions. A bad die can have one of several fates, depending on the card’s creator and strategy. It may be rejected (ineffective!) My assumption (and I emphasize that without strong confirmation from Nvidia: the assumption will remain so) is that at least a few GPUs in the Super line (RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2060 Super) could be binned versions of the GPU last year, in any case one level higher. This idea is supported by the company’s claim that “Supers are based on the same Turing GPUs as the original 20 series.”

The two options are that for the RTX 2070 Super, for example, or (1) Nvidia has improved its ability to construct a TU106 chip with 10.8 billion transistors to get results below the RTX 2080 on a bone that is exactly the same transistor count (13.6 billion) as TU104 (RTX 2080) or (2) Supers bones represent rugged versions of the RTX 2060, RTX 2070, and RTX 2080 based on GPU forms next to the stack. The first scenario seems unlikely to us!

This assumption is confirmed by the fact that Nvidia has not announced the RTX 2080 Ti Super card. If each Super is sourcing its GPU from another existing one, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti has no higher tier equivalent than the Nvidia RTX Titan, which is double the RTX 2080 Ti and based on a completely different architectural ethos that doesn’t prioritize performance in games.

Finally, there is one more tip: the GeForce RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 will be replaced by the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 Super respectively, but the sale will remain different from the Super GeForce RTX 2060. (Who knows, maybe “RTX 2050 Super?)

The RTX 2070 is by no means a bad card. It was actually a card you could get last year if you wanted to get good results without spending too much. The same is now the case with the RTX 3070, except that the 3070 is much more powerful and beats the RTX 2070 for performance in all areas.
