One Comfortable Keyboard

The EliteBook 840’s illuminated keyboard and touchpad are extremely comfortable. Testing the EliteBook 840 G7: A Productivity Powerhouse

With six processor cores, the EliteBook’s Core i7 processor enables the core productivity tasks for which the laptop is designed to run fast. I have never experienced lag or slowdown while browsing the web and installing applications, in many cases simultaneously. However, I have often heard the cooling fan go up even when no applications were open. HP says it has redesigned the temperature management system on the EliteBook 840 to reduce fan noise, but it’s definitely still noticeable.

In most of our benchmarks, the EliteBook 840 showed similar performance, outperforming the quad-core processors in the similarly priced Dell Latitude 7410 and Latitude 9410 2-in-1 versions. It also outperformed the Core i5 on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, although this machine is slightly cheaper in the 400 900 version we tested. However, the EliteBook is no match for business laptops powered by the latest AMD Ryzen Pro processors. Even the Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U midrange in the recently tested Lenovo ThinkPad X13 offers better performance in a laptop half the price of the EliteBook 840. The configurations of each of these systems can be seen in the chart below.

As with some ThinkPad models, the EliteBook 800 series is also available with Ryzen Pro processors instead of Intel chips. Companies that don’t need Intel-specific features and are looking for the best computing performance available may want to look for the EliteBook 845 with a Ryzen Pro processor, whose other features are mostly identical to the EliteBook 840. Storage, Content Creation, and CPU Tests

Our main benchmarks are PCMark 10 and PCMark 8, which are holistic performance packages developed by PC performance test specialists from UL (formerly Futuremark). The PCMark 10 test we run simulates various real-world workflows and content creation. We use it to evaluate the overall system performance for office tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet copying, web browsing and video conferencing. The test produces a proprietary numerical score; higher numbers are better. The advantage of the ThinkPad X13 is immediately visible here, as the EliteBook 840 and other systems are grouped closer together by a few hundred points lower. However, keep in mind that a value above 4,000 in this test usually indicates excellent performance.

Meanwhile, PCMark 8 has a memory subtest we use to judge the speed of the system boot drive. This result is also a proprietary numeric result; again, higher numbers are better. We expect all SSD systems to achieve excellent results in this test of around 5000, and this is certainly the case here.

Next comes the Maxon Cinebench R15 CPU-loading test that is fully multi-threaded to take advantage of all available CPU cores and threads. Cinebench puts emphasis on the CPU, not the GPU, to render a complex image. The result is a proprietary score that indicates the suitability of the computer for CPU-intensive workloads. It shows the slight advantage of the EliteBook 840 over the Latitude and X1 Carbon systems, while the X13 is clearly in a different league.

These results are very close to our Handbrake Video Editing Test, another tough, multi-threaded workout that is heavily CPU-dependent and scales well with cores and threads. We put a stopwatch in it on test systems that transcode a standard 12-minute 4K video clip into a 1080p MP4 file. It’s a timed test and lower scores are better.
