This one has legs, this one has legs, I’ll give it to him. – It has to be “The Passage”? I hear you talking. But honestly, I would have been banging my head in hand-to-hand combat if Valve hadn’t thrown us a new campaign recently, some new weapons, and some interesting weekly game-altering mutations.

Die-hard L4D fans may still complain, but L4D2 is a much better game in every way. I kick myself out that I didn’t find out what was the reason the Hard Rain campaign has garnered breathtaking praise over the past year. (If you haven’t fought the Infected during the tropical storms yet, then you’re poorer.)

The new mutations Valve has been delivering every week for the past few months has made me demand more ‘Realism Versus’ games where Survivors have to do without neon outlines showing exactly where their teammates are and scary / fun. Indeed, you can have time for both people and those who are infected.

Thankfully, Valve listened and made it a constant addition.

But when I inevitably give in (and when I “turn around” I would of course ask you to put your feelings aside and shoot me in the head in the blink of an eye), I will do the game a lot of harm. Which with the fast looking and controversial on the internet, it’s super easy to make the L4D2 look like a simple upgrade stack. This might sound like something like the zombie equivalent of FIFA’s annual updates: Redneck Rampage, in which characters are more likely to say “yee-hah” and “darn totin!”. However, this would be completely unfair. What can be interpreted as a lot of fun and potentially unnecessary, the gameplay add-ons come together in a fabric that enhances the L4D experience to an astonishing degree.

First, the new creatures deepen the co-op tactic and make the game’s Versus Modes much more vivid and surprising. Moreover, the new settings brilliantly evoke the impression of real national emergencies and panic among the population. Then, an extended mix of weapons gives you a feeling of personalized tactics and combat.

Boom-Time

Meanwhile, over the course of five in-game campaigns, you get the feeling that Valve has become much more comfortable with themselves and their game. The strict format and familiar patterns of repetitive build-ups and climaxes have been smoothed out, replaced with fluid, organic levels where Valve begins to loosen ties – suddenly more able to tame the feeling of surprise and delight that we’re more used to seeing in our Half-Life games. Yes, L4D2 is really a separate game. And damn good too.

However, you know the exercise. So let’s not get bogged down in discussions about who Boomer is and what he does. First things first: there is no doubt that your first moments in the L4D2 will basically consist of racing zombies, taking your legs off with an ax and running around giggling.
