For Windows users

1. Update the game

You’ll see some people have reported that they are solving the problem by plugging speakers or a headset into the system. An active audio source is required to play Stardew Valley. But the development team fixed it in Update 1.4. So, if you are playing an older version and encounter this problem, updating the game will help you get rid of it.

At the moment, the patch Stardew Valley 1.5.4 has been released for PC.

2. Delete the startup preferences folder

Stardew Valley will use the specified file to store the startup preferences for users, but this file may be causing the problem to not work / start up. You can delete the startup preferences file to fix the problem.

Make sure you have also verified the Steam files.

If that doesn’t work, go to the next hotfix.

3. Install XNA installer

Stardew Valley is a video game that uses the Microsoft XNA platform. Therefore, this structure must be properly installed and working. This hotfix will show you how to run the installer.

Don’t worry about downloading the Microsoft XNA framework, Microsoft has removed it from their official website.

4. Update d3d9.dll

The older version of d3d9.dll may be causing the Stardew Valley startup problem. To do this, you need to know that the hotfix can be harmful if the DLL file downloaded from the Internet contains viruses or malware.

1. Back up your data.
2. Download the latest version of d3d9.dll from the Internet.
3. Copy the DLL file and go to C: \ Windows \ System32 .
4. Paste the new DLL file and replace the old one.
5. Right-click 32-bit files and copy.
6. Go to C: \ Windows \ SysWOW64 and paste the file to replace the old one.
7. Run Stardew Valley to find out.

5. Set Launch Options in Steam

Configuring Steam’s launch options would be a useful tweak for Stardew Valley.

1. Open Steam Library, right-click on Stardew Vally and select Properties.
2. In the General tab, click SET BOOT OPTIONS.
3. Make sure the pop-up is blank. Then click OK to save your changes.
4. Run Stardew Valley to find out.

If you denied the game access to the folder, you may experience this problem. Follow the steps to fix the error:

1. Press the command button and spacebar at the same time, you will get Spotlight search.
2. Type Terminal and press Enter to search.
3. Open a terminal.
4. Copy or type the following command in Terminal and press Enter.
   Note: Change USER to your username.
   sudo chown -v “$ USER” ~ / .config
5. You may need to enter a password to display the command.
6. Run Stardew Valley to find out.

Why is there no multiplayer or I can’t find one?

We are not testing a multiplayer game here as most games will not run in multiplayer if you didn’t buy it.
