There are many reasons to update Internet Explorer. Update Internet Explorer when Microsoft releases a new version of its web browser or if there is a problem with Internet Explorer and other troubleshooting steps did not work. In many cases, you can update IE and the problem may go away.

Have you changed your Microsoft browsers? Here’s how to update your Edge browser.

The information in this article applies to Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP.

You don’t need to uninstall the current version of IE to update Internet Explorer to the latest version. Updated version replaces the outdated one.

How to Download and Update Internet Explorer

To update Internet Explorer, download and install it from Microsoft.

Only update Microsoft Internet Explorer. Several legitimate websites offer Internet Explorer downloads, but many less reputable sites do.

It is best to always receive incremental Internet Explorer updates, such as the ones you see Tuesday to correct minor bugs or fix security issues, through Windows Update.

Find your language in the list on their site (for example, English).

Then select the 32-bit or 64-bit link to download that version for your computer. If you are not sure which download link to choose, check which version of Windows is installed on your computer.

The downloads in these links are for the full, offline version of IE11. All installation files are included in the download. Microsoft offers an online version, but download the offline version if there is a problem with your current IE installation or if you want to put the file on a flash drive or other media.

When the installation files are downloaded, Internet Explorer automatically updates (or upgrades) and keeps your favorites, cookies, form history, and saved passwords intact.

Note: This retirement does not affect the Windows 10 LTSC or Server Internet Explorer 11 desktop applications in the market. MSHTML (Trident) is not affected as well. For a complete list of what this announcement is about, as well as other technical questions, please see our FAQ .

Reason #1 – Improved compatibility

With Microsoft Edge, you get the advantage of two engines that support both legacy and modern websites. Internet Explorer Mode provides built-in support for legacy browsers for websites and applications that still require Internet Explorer. In fact, Microsoft Edge is the only browser with built-in compatibility with older Internet Explorer-based websites and applications, including support for features like ActiveX controls. Microsoft Edge is also based on the Chromium project – a technology that supports many modern browsers – which means it provides world-class support for modern websites. With the advantage of two motors, you can get the best of the web, both in the past and in the future.

Having to use different browsers for different tasks can be frustrating. You may want to stay in a modern browser, but a public website or internal work app can only run in Internet Explorer. That’s where Microsoft Edge comes in. Its advantages of two engines improve your productivity. Instead of using “this browser for this site” and “this browser for this site”, now you can just use Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Edge also offers new, modern features that you won’t find in Internet Explorer. Do dozens of cards slow down your computer? Use sleeping tabs to free up resources. Are the same tabs unreadable at the top of the browser? Move them to the side and make them easier to read with vertical tabs. Want your favorites to be more than just links? It is easier to collect and organize information found on the Internet thanks to the Collection. Do you like to use different browsers for work and personal use? Try to set up different profiles in Microsoft Edge and just use them.

And this is just the beginning.

Reason #3 – Better browser security

Approximately 579 password attacks are attempted every second – you need a browser for this challenge. Microsoft Edge offers top-rated protection against both phishing and malware attacks on Windows 10 with Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. It also offers a Password Monitor that scans the dark web to identify if your credentials have been compromised. And thanks to its association with the Microsoft 365 Security suite, Microsoft Edge is even better for organizations: Microsoft Edge is more secure than Chrome for businesses on Windows 10.

In today’s evolved security landscape, it’s also important that Microsoft Edge be more flexible in responding to security vulnerabilities. While Internet Explorer 11 packaged security updates monthly, Microsoft Edge can release security patches for immediate vulnerabilities in days, if not hours.

If Internet Explorer has been your favorite for years, Microsoft Edge can now be your trusted network companion for better compatibility, improved productivity, and better browser security.

In most cases, the latest version of Internet Explorer will be automatically installed at some point after its release through Windows Update. If the update is not automatic, check and install the Windows update manually.

Edge browser update

Your Internet Explorer web browser is out of date and cannot correctly display the website you are visiting because it is not compatible with modern web standards.

Our take

Internet Explorer is a basic, decent browser. No new additions or extensions, no bells or whistles. If we could describe it in one word, it would be “standard”. It can handle searches, bookmarks, decent definition videos, and some light browser games. Don’t try to do too much with this browser other than superficial activities like searching, reading, and the occasional download of small files.

You should download Internet Explorer if you are a very simple internet user. If you prefer paper books from Kindles and writing letters to SMS, this viewer is for you. You can watch videos, but after testing a few on YouTube, switching to a different tab and back would crash your browser. Avoid sites with a lot of ads and graphics as these will also cause IE to crash. This browser has come a long way in terms of speed, with most sites loading in about three seconds or less. With that in mind, there are more things you can’t do than you can, especially if you are trying this browser after using others like Firefox or Chrome. No extensions, frequent downloads, and playing browser games is almost impossible for long periods of time.

More On: microsoft

Microsoft will finally phase out Internet Explorer after more than 25 years.

The software giant announced on Wednesday that the current version of Internet Explorer will no longer be supported on consumer editions of Windows 10 from June 15, 2022.

Instead, Microsoft said it was focusing on the Edge browser, which it launched in 2015.

“We announce the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge,” said Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge program manager.

“Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and will no longer be supported on June 15, 2022 for some versions of Windows 10.”

Internet Explorer was once the dominant player in the early days of the Internet, but it gradually faded away as other tech giants introduced web browsers like Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari.

According to data from analyst Statcounter, as of April, Explorer holds less than 2 percent of the global desktop browser market. By comparison, Google’s Chrome has 65 percent of the market share, followed by Apple’s Safari with 18 percent

This marks a sharp decline for Explorer – which has been the dominant browser for more than a decade after its release in 1995.

At its peak in the late 1990s, Explorer’s dominance was key to the government’s antitrust action against Microsoft.

A federal judge ruled that Microsoft violated antitrust law by tying Explorer to its Windows operating system software. This practice effectively killed the use of rival Netscape Navigator in 1995-1998, the judge said.

Microsoft settled charges with the Justice Department in 2001, but pleaded not guilty.

It was one of the first US antitrust repression in the technology sector.

However, Microsoft told explorers that it would continue to offer “IE mode” in its Edge browser, which allows users to access sites and applications that have not moved from Explorer.

When the installation files are downloaded, Internet Explorer automatically updates (or upgrades) and keeps your favorites, cookies, form history, and saved passwords intact.
