Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050

The GTX 1050 offers up to 18% more performance than its original competitor. In the case of the RX 460, the difference is too great to be an alternative to the GTX 1050. But the RX 560 is.

Perfect for budget gaming laptops

One of the best things about the 10 series GPUs is that there are no dedicated mobile variants anymore. Laptop versions won’t provide as much absolute power as desktop cards, but they’re mostly the same GPU, but in something you can throw in your bag.

In early 2017, I compared my Dell Inspiron 15 7000 with a 4GB GTX 960M to an ASUS Strix GL753 with a 4GB GTX 1050 inside. The results were quite astonishing, especially considering that the 960M wasn’t the previous-generation primary GPU.

Even at high settings, the GTX 1050 was approaching or exceeding 60 FPS (Gears of War 4 and Dirt Rally) in some games. In others, it still comfortably exceeds 30fps, which puts it in front of the console in most cases. The GTX 1050 Ti would probably have fared even better.

The point is, if you’re looking for an inexpensive gaming laptop, even a 2GB GTX 1050 will likely give you an overall better time than an older laptop with a last-gen GPU. In addition to offering good performance, the 10-series GPUs are generally more powerful, which is important especially for a laptop.

A great card for “esports” titles

The GTX 1050 can do more than you might think, but it is especially good for people who mainly want to play esports titles. I mean games like CS: GO, League of Legends, Dota 2, Rocket League and the like. All of these games can be played on weaker hardware, which in turn is probably one of the reasons why they are so successful.

The system requirements of CS: GO are so low that you can play on a modern Ultrabook with integrated graphics. The GTX 1050 will reproduce this at high FPS with no problem. Same with the other titles mentioned.

The most important thing to remember is that if these games are your primary focus, the GTX 1050 will allow you to build a very affordable computer that will give you a great experience.

As mentioned above, if you get 4GB of 1050 Ti you’ll be able to play more intense games like Gears of War 4 with some graphics settings tweaked a bit and get a very playable experience.

Where it falls is where your needs or desires are higher. If you’re pairing it with a 1440p or 4K display for gaming, think again. If you’re going to be using it to play PC games and stream from the same PC, you probably need something crunchy. Likewise, if you are a video editor.
