Best Nvidia Shadowplay Recording Settings

Shadowplay (or the Nvidia GeForce experience) enables smooth gameplay recording with minimal loss of performance (around 1-5%) by using a dedicated NVENC chip available on select Nvidia graphics cards. No other capture method (aside from the capture card) can record gameplay with such a slight drop in performance. In this blog post, I’ll show you a trick to get the best video quality when recording with Shadowplay. In addition, I’ll show you how to avoid delayed or corrupted recordings in games that use tons of GPU resources like COD Modern Warfare Warzone.

Best Shadowplay Recording Settings

The most important aspect is to properly configure the video recording settings tab in Nvidia GeForce Experience.

• Set the quality to custom
• Set the resolution to 4K (even if you don’t have a 4K screen!!)
• Set the frame rate to 60 frames per second
• Set the bit rate to 130 Mbps (or any highest bit rate you can choose)

If you set the resolution to 4K instead of the actual resolution, you will have access to the higher recording bit rates that are required to get good-looking Shadowplay recordings. If you set the resolution to “in game” it seems like you can still set the bitrate to 130Mbps, but in fact Shadowplay will only record at a mediocre 85Mbps. Remember that Shadowplay will still record in your monitor’s native resolution even if you set it to 4K!!

With a well-detected microphone that works well with other applications? To troubleshoot no recording, simply enable the GeForce Experience Overlay in-game, then click the microphone icon and switch it to Always On .

How to set up Fortnite Nvidia Highlights

Go to GeForce Experience and open the settings.

Then go to the in-game overlay settings and select “Highlights”.

Now turn on “Capture” at the top. This allows Fortnite to automatically capture screenshots and video recordings using ShadowPlay.

From here you can see where your files are stored and set the maximum amount of disk space. The default maximum disk space is 5 GB.

But I recommend you set it higher. I have this set to 30 GB so I’m sure there’s enough space to record everything.

If you are using a low memory disk, such as an SSD, you can set the maximum disk space to a lower value to fit your needs.

How to set up when Fortnite highlights will record

You can enable your Nvidia graphics card to automatically record your best Fortnite moments.

Here’s what you can record:

• Elimination
• Double eliminations
• Triple Elimination
• Multiple eliminations
• Deaths
• Falls
• Royal Victory

To do this, open Fortnite and press Alt + Z.

Then go to settings and select “Highlights”.

From here you can turn various things on and off as you see fit.

I have mine set up to record all events so I know I will never miss any other event.

As you can see, ShadowPlay can record as well. This allows you to record high-quality games at resolutions up to 8K @ 30fps or 4K @ 60fps. In addition, every function has a hotkey so you can start recording or save an instant replay without having to open the ShadowPlay overlay every time.

Recording games using Nvidia ShadowPlay

Now everything is ready, let’s record the game with Nvidia ShadowPlay. You can also broadcast live if you want, but for starters I think it’s safer to record. At least until you get used to being seen in public.

1. Open the game and select Alt + Z which is the default key to invoke Nvidia ShadowPlay.
2. Select Record to start recording.
3. Play your game.
4. Select Alt + Z and stop recording when you’re done.

Some games can do more with Nvidia ShadowPlay and will have Highlights. PUBG, for example, has a setting in video capture that records kills and saves them as a highlights file. Each time you score a kill in PUBG, you’ll see a “Single Kill Saved” notification on the screen. This will save this kill as a video file in the same folder as the other recordings.

Some other games have similar settings where you can capture the most important moments of the kills or anything else to enjoy later or upload them to the internet to show off. I know Fortnite has a similar setup and I suppose other top games will have them too.

You can watch your gameplay by selecting a video from the Nvidia ShadowPlay UI or directly from the folder where it’s stored. You can do basic editing from within ShadowPlay or use a video editor as the videos are saved as MP4.

If you want to record your gameplay without using Windows Game Over or Twitch overlay, it could be Nvidia ShadowPlay. As long as you have an Nvidia graphics card anyway. It’s easy to set up, stores files as usable MP4, and even offers online sharing or editing of these recordings before publishing. If you want to live stream you can and beyond this performance load, there are no real downsides to using Nvidia ShadowPlay!

Before we use ShadowPlay, we need to enable it in GeForce Experience. The application will inform you whether your system is up to the task or not, and will display a link to the above page. It takes less than five minutes to set up and most of the time the defaults are fine.

This graphics processor allows you to use the GeForce Experience needed to capture games. Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of GeForce Experience and updated your drivers before following the steps below. Enable In-Game Overlay in GeForce Experience

In order to record highlights in Fortnite Battle Royale, you must first configure the settings in NVIDIA software. Epic Games’ Fortnite has evolved significantly from its early stages in Early Access. It initially appeared as a four-player co-op PvE game focusing on building huge, complex forts using a variety of crafting materials. While this mode is still available and pretty cool, it’s the game’s free Battle Royale mode that has taken the spotlight as you face 99 other players in a frantic battle for first place. At the time of its release, Fortnite Battle Royale has reached 3.4 million concurrent players and is getting stronger.

With NVIDIA Highlights enabled, you’ll have all your killer shots (or downright happy) kills, hilarious deaths, and great Victory Royale moments captured and saved for sharing, with each video, screenshot, or GIF one click after each match is over. To launch and run NVIDIA Highlights features in Fortnite Battle Royale, make sure GeForce Experience is updated, then double-check that the latest Game Ready driver for the game is installed. Then, after launching the game, click “Yes” when prompted by GeForce Experience to enable the feature. After the match is over, click the Highlights button in the lower right corner of the screen and you will be able to view your content and choose which ones you want to share on social media.and which to save in your gallery.

The game recording feature in GeForce Experience is very easy to use. With a few hotkeys, you can just hit the hotkeys to start or stop recording, you can even turn on instant replay and record the last 2 minutes of gameplay videos when you think you’re playing well.

#1 How to Fix GeForce Experience not recording gameplay

If you are sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements and your GeForce driver is up to date. There are two more ways to fix the no recording problem.

Method 1 Navigate to the GeForce installation folder, which by default is “C: \ Program Files \ NVIDIA Corporation \ NVIDIA GeForce Experience”. Find NVIDIA GeForce Experience.exe and NVIDIA Share.exe, right-click them to open the Properties windows and go to the Compatibility tab, check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows 8.

Way 2 Where in-game overlay conflicts with the best Nvidia ShadowPlay features.

Step 1 Close the game, open GeForce Experience, go to Settings, and close the in-game overlay.

#2 GeForce Experience not recording game audio

When you record your gameplay, you definitely want to record in-game audio and voice chat during battle. So it can be frustrating. There are five things we can do to see how to fix it. Let’s go.

\ 1 Application volume and device preferences

Right click the speaker icon on the right side of the taskbar and click Open Sound Settings, at the bottom of the sound settings window you will see the app and device volume settings, click on them and you should be able to see System Sounds and NVIDIA Container. Make sure the volume is turned on and set to 100.

\ 2 Combine the two tracks

There are two options in GeForce Experience Overlay Audio Settings: Create One Track and Separate Both Tracks. Selecting Separate Both Tracks may result in the situation not being recorded, so make sure Create Single Track is selected.

Just press Alt + Z to open the in-game overlay, click the settings gear icon in the lower-right corner of the settings window, scroll down and select Sound.

\ 3 Default playback device

Sometimes the default playback device will affect Shadowplay audio recording.

Right click on the speaker icon and select Open Volume Mixer and you will see system sounds, click on it. And select the Playback tab in the Sound pop-up window. Here, in my case, I will choose speakers as the default playback. You should choose the one that suits your needs. Just scroll down, select one and click the Set Default button at the bottom, then Apply your modification.

4 Nahimic, Xonar and Razer Kraken

At this point, make sure you don’t have Nahimic, Xonar, and Razer Kraken on your computer as these apps will stop shadowplay audio recording in the game. If you find such tools on your computer, just uninstall them.

\ 5 NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM)

The last thing you can check is the NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device in Device Manager. Just right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. In the Device Manager window, scroll down and find Sound, video and game controllers under which you can see the NVIDIA virtual audio device (Wave Extensible) (WDM). Make sure it is turned on.

As mentioned before, it is basically a screen recording and sharing app with some extra features. With that said, let’s see what it has to offer.

Instant Replay

For starters, Instant Replay is a feature that records the contents of your screen until you save the recording. Put simply, it is like an on-screen recording that will record the recording of the last few minutes as described. This allows you to record your gameplay. It is useful to collect game clips.

Similarly, here’s what the Instant Replay toggle looks like:

As you can see, ShadowPlay can record as well. This allows you to record high-quality games at resolutions up to 8K @ 30fps or 4K @ 60fps. In addition, every function has a hotkey so you can start recording or save an instant replay without having to open the ShadowPlay overlay every time.

As shown above, you can choose between variable bitrate, resolution and frame rate for recording. The settings page also includes an Instant Replay Length option. These settings are common to both Instant Replay and Recording, and will apply to both as soon as you save them.

NVIDIA Highlights

NVIDIA Highlights is only available on select GPU models and automatically captures your gaming moments. For example, it will automatically record all your kills and great game moments. After the match is over, you can share your highlight clip on social media platforms, as shown by NVIDIA in its video.

Broadcast LIVE

Moreover, this feature is self-explanatory. You can use the broadcast option to broadcast your game live to popular streaming platforms such as Twitch and YouTube. Just log in, select a stream quality and start. It’s so simple.

Game Filter, Screenshot, Photo Mode and More

Finally, there are some small but useful features like Game Filter which applies a color filter to your games for better visibility, better blacks, etc. You also have Screenshot and Photo Mode features to capture games.

One of the noticeable and helpful tools built into ShadowPlay is the Performance Overlay. The overlay shows statistics of system components, including memory usage, GPU clock, CPU clock, temperatures etc.

Note: Some features may not be available for all NVIDIA GPUs, and the UI may also be different for two different series of graphics cards. The above screenshots were taken on a GTX 1060 system.

Can I Use ShadowPlay and Will It Affect My Computer?

This is the most confusing part for most users with older GPUs. As mentioned on the NVIDIA website, the minimum requirements for instant replay and recording are as follows.

• GPU:
  1. Desktop: GeForce GTX 650 or newer
  2. Notebook: GTX850M, 860M, 950M, 960M or higher series.
• Driver: GeForce 430.64 or higher driver
• RAM: 4 GB or more

As well as it sounds, there are ramifications to using ShadowPlay. If you are using Instant Replay or Recording, you are using the GPU as long as it is turned on. This will definitely impact game performance and lead to a slightly lower FPS. Conditions will vary depending on GPU to GPU.
