It’s definitely a powerful GPU, and its 12GB of GDDR6 memory is a welcome addition (especially when the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070 only have 8GB of VRAM). While it’s not as high as the 16GB of VRAM in the rest of the RX 6000 family, 12GB still provides enough space to take advantage of these high-quality 1440p texture and preset packs and should last for years to come too. Indeed, we can already see that some games like Watch Dogs Legion are starting to require more than 8GB of VRAM for their best Ultra settings, meaning the Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070 are likely to encounter VRAM bottlenecks much faster than any other AMD Rx 6000 GPU.

However, it still has a relatively high TDP of 230W, and AMD recommends pairing it with a power supply of at least 650W. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s RTX 3070 has a TDP of 220W (which Nvidia also recommends in conjunction with a 650W PSU), while the RTX The 3060 Ti has a TDP of 200W. The latter only needs a 600W power supply according to Nvidia, which can help keep costs down if you’re building a new PC from scratch.

Should I buy an AMD RX 6700 XT?

As mentioned above, it cannot be denied that the RX 6700 XT is a powerful 1440p gaming graphics card. It’s just that it’s not a particularly high value compared to the starting price of Nvidia’s rivals. In my testing, I found it was often as fast as Nvidia’s cheaper RTX 3060 Ti, and the slightly more expensive RTX 3070 was quite far ahead in terms of overall performance.

Add ray tracing to the mix, and the RX 6700 XT is even further behind, if only because so many ray tracing games currently support Nvidia’s DLSS technology to help boost frame rates, while AMD’s rival resolution-enhancing technology, FidelityFX Super Resolution still nowhere to be seen. Admittedly, the number of games using ray tracing is quite small these days, but it’s one of the main reasons you may be considering switching to a new graphics card right now, and while Nvidia cards can do it much better, it makes It is very difficult to recommend any of the AMD RX 6000 GPUs as a good value alternative.

We also do not know when FidelityFX Super Resolution will appear. AMD committed to “this year” in the PC World interview I mentioned earlier, but from what we know, it could be December. Here’s what AMD told me when I asked for an update in preparation for the RX 6700 XT:

“We continue to expand our collaboration with game developers to develop a scaling feature for AMD Radeon graphics cards that can be easily implemented in a wide range of titles. More details on the AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution feature will be provided in due course.”

As I mentioned in my review of the RX 6700 XT, the new AMD 1440p graphics card arrives at an unpleasant moment for new graphics card buyers, as we are not only dealing with availability issues, but also with an incomplete feature set. Hopefully the FidelityFX Super Resolution will eventually level the playing field when it comes to the RX 6000’s ray tracing performance, but now they are all very lagging behind compared to their Nvidia rivals.

The reference or Founders Edition of the RX 6700 XT has arguably the best performance / price of any RX 6700 XT graphics card. It is certainly the cheapest overall and most suitable for those on a budget.

Which stores sell the AMD RX 6700 XT?

When asked which stores would sell the RX 6700 XT, an AMD spokesman told Trusted Reviews:

“The RX 6700 XT will be available standalone as well as off-the-shelf gaming PCs from our UK partners including AlphaSync, AWD-IT, CyberPower UK, Novatech, Overclockers UK, PCSpecialist and Scan.”

Unfortunately, they didn’t give any insight into how many cards each store would have when asked to do so, leaving in the air how long they would stay for sale.

We have not currently tested (or seen) any external versions of the RX 6700 XT, such as Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY, and Zotac. These cards tend to have slightly better specs than the reference version, which aims to provide third party cards with the foundation to build and not as a final consumer product. They usually do this by slightly increasing the clock frequency of the card or adding custom cooling to improve performance or reduce their size.

Stocks of the RX 6700 XT are limited. However, based on our experience looking for a stock of older AMD RX 6800 and RX 6900 XT cards, it will likely be easier to get hold of them by purchasing a finished desktop PC with it already installed.
