What is the Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti?

RTX 3080 Ti is the new flagship graphics card of the American tech giant Nvidia.

It is said to be the fastest and most powerful GPU made by the company.

Gamers can load it into their custom PCs to enhance the performance of video games and other heavy-duty tasks.

According to Nvidia, “If you want ultra-performance gaming, ray tracing, rendering, and GPU accelerated applications, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is the graphics card for you.

“In rasterized and ray-traced games, performance is 1.5 times faster, and when rendering in Blender, V-Ray and other applications, performance is up to 2 times faster than in the previous generation.

“Regardless of the workload, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti delivers the best performance.”

Yes and no. It depends on how you define “value”. Some people may spend more on design, appearance, and aesthetics. However, even the liquid-cooled RTX 3080 Ti will not perform much better compared to the air-cooled RTX 3080 Ti. It will definitely have an advantage as it has a better cooling solution. Many NVIDIA GPU enthusiasts say that if you ever decide to go with the EVGA variants, you’ll never go wrong. Models of this brand are always affordable, but also quiet and fast.

The EVGA RTX 3080 Ti uses the already well-known “FTW3 Ultra” design that has proven to be thermally efficient with the previous SKUs in the RTX 3000 series. The expectations for this model are high.

Let’s see if it meets these expectations.

Pricing

The MSRP of all RTX 3000 SKUs was positive for these GPUs, with the obvious exception of the RTX 3090. Well, so far the 3090 was the only exception. We can add 3080 Ti to the list of disappointing prices.

Its price is $ 1,200, $ 500 more than $ 3,080. For a 40% price increase, expect a significant performance improvement. Unfortunately, you will also be disappointed in this regard, but we’ll look at it later.

According to EVGA, the FTW3 Ultra variant will cost $ 1,400, which is $ 200 more than NVIDIA’s suggested retail price. This is a big price increase, bringing your costs closer to the RTX 3090 (if you can find the 3090 at its suggested retail price).

Design

In terms of design, it is the same as other RTX 3000 SKUs using the FTW3 Ultra model. A basic black grille surrounds a three-fan setup on the front with a nice amount of RGB on the side. The RGB strip can be a bit tacky, but that is down to personal preference.

There is a metal back plate on the back which acts as a heat conductor as there are thermal pads on the memory chips on the back of the circuit board. The back plate itself has many lugs (holes) that can help with heat dissipation.

Interestingly, the Founders Edition of this card has a power of 320 W, so it only has 2 8-pin connectors. The 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra is 350W, but has three 8-pin connectors, possibly to allow for additional overclocking, which brings us to our next topic.

In terms of connectivity, you’ll get three DisplayPort 1.4a and one HDMI 2.1 that support up to 8K @ 30FPS or 4K @ 144Hz.

Performance And Overclocking Capabilities

Naturally, appearance is the least of a technology enthusiast’s concern. You’re probably more interested in the performance of this card, so let’s cover that.

At factory settings, the 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra averages around 1,846MHz and peaks around 1,875MHz when loaded in gaming. This is as much as 4% more than the advertised clock speed. Not bad, but let’s see if any custom OC can help this card reach higher frequencies.

Based on several results found on the Internet, it appears that the EVGA card can continuously overclock up to 1950 MHz, which is 8-9% faster. The performance improvement will in fact likely be lower.

Remember that thanks to the three 8-pin connectors, the power consumption can go up to 450W.

Thermals

Good performance does not necessarily translate to a good graphics card. A good card also needs to have a strong enough radiator / heatsink to keep it quiet and cool.

According to Nvidia, both GPUs will be available in limited editions of Nvidia Founders Editions and personalized third party cards on appropriate release dates, including stock clock and factory overclocked models from all common suspects such as Asus, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galax, Gigabyte , Inno3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, Zotac and others. They will also be available for purchase as standalone GPUs and as part of off-the-shelf desktop systems.

Now let’s move on to a few detailed specs. According to Nvidia, starting with the RTX 3080 Ti, it will come with 12 GB of GDDR6X memory – 2 GB compared to 10 GB on the RTX 3080 – and will provide up to 1.5 times the performance of the RTX 2080 Ti. Other specs released by Nvidia during the presentation include 34 teraflops of shaders and 67 teraflops of ray tracing and 273 teraflops of Tensor, but more details can be found in the table below so you can see exactly how they stack up against the rest of their 30 siblings RTX.

The RTX 3070 Ti, on the other hand, will come with 8GB of GDDR6X memory, which is the same as the original RTX 3070, but the key difference is that it’s the faster GDDR6X type that is currently found in the RTX 3080 and above, instead of the regular GDDR6 memory. In addition to 22 teraflops shaders, 42 teraflops ray tracing and 174 teraflops Tensor, this will make the RTX 3070 Ti approximately 1.5 times faster than the RTX 2070 Super, says Nvidia.

The NVIDIA RTX 3080 graphics processor was the first 30 series card that could be downloaded from NVIDIA. It’s now officially released at around $ 700, although it’s already sold out pretty much everywhere. If you haven’t managed to get your hands on the first wave of cards, don’t worry. You can check availability on the NVIDIA website or go to individual resellers.

Best Buy currently has RTX 3080 options from NVIDIA (Founders Edition), ASUS, EVGA, MSI, PNY, and Gigabyte, although the stocks have been wiped out.

Amazon has plenty of RTX 3080 offerings from PNY, Zotac, MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte, and ASUS, although the stocks here are either sold out or much higher than they should be at the time of writing. You can register for notifications by clicking on the individual GPU pages.

Walmart has a lot of RTX 3080 GPUs coming in and out of the auction, although all of them are at elevated prices, if available at all.

If you shop at Newegg and can’t find standalone GPUs, it’s because most of them have been ported to Newegg “Shuffle”. This event allows you to select the products that interest you, ending with hopefully you will be attracted to purchase the product in question. Shuffling is done on a regular basis, so be sure to check back often.

The NVIDIA RTX 3080 is positioned as an option for PC enthusiasts looking for a consistent frame rate at 4K resolution. Our tests on the 1440p show that the RTX 3080 provides approximately a 15% to 70% increase in performance compared to the RTX 2080. In 4K, performance is almost twice as high in some games as compared to the RTX 2080.

The Asus ROG Strix LC RTX 3080 Ti OC features a hybrid cooling solution. Its GPU is cooled by a 240mm radiator and the tube connecting the heat sink to the GPU copper plate is 560mm long. It also has RGB lighting on the fans and on the graphics card itself. In addition to liquid cooling, a blower type fan is used to cool the aluminum heat sink that contacts the VRM and other components.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti XC3 Ultra Hybrid Gaming

The EVGA RTX 3080 Ti XC3 Ultra Hybrid is somewhat similar to the Asus ROG Strix LC. But the XC3 Ultra Hybrid lacks eye-catching RGB lighting. Only the logo on the side and back has RGB lighting. Overall, it has a completely black aesthetic including two 120mm fans to cool the radiator.

Unlike Asus’s liquid-cooled RTX 3080 Ti, the EVGA RTX 3080 Ti XC3 Ultra Hybrid only takes up two PCI slots and only requires two 8-pin PCIe power connectors.

Nvidia Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti: Where to look for stock

While the RTX 3080 Ti is listed at many retailers, none of them are in stock at the moment. If you desperately need a card without delay, the resale market is the only place you can find stock right now.

However, some retailers still list cards as “soon” rather than “sold out” and have not yet started taking orders, even though the RTX 3080 Ti has been officially launched. Frustratingly these sellers are still silent when it really is “soon”, but these are offers that you should be looking at closely for now. These sellers can take orders at any time.

Keep in mind that Newegg often provides a “Shuffle” feature to help people get their gear. The event allows you to choose the product you are interested in from a predefined list, after which the draw is made to determine who can buy the product. Shuffling is done regularly so check back often.

The new GPU will be on the Nvidia lineup between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, which have a suggested retail price of $ 699 and $ 400,499, respectively. Reportedly, 12GB of VRAM may be the same as Nvidia’s cheapest Ampere card, the RTX 3060, but will likely use the faster GDDR6X memory instead. With 10,240 cores, CUDA is very close to the 10,496 of the 3090. Since the vast majority of games don’t need a whopping 24 GB of VRAM in the 3090, this card can easily come close to its performance.

A recent leak revealed possible RTX 3080 Ti clock rates, with base and boost clocks of 1365 MHz and 1665 MHz, respectively. Compare that to the RTX 3090 1410 MHz and 1740 MHz, and the 3080 Ti is pretty close and can come close with a little overclocking.
